Is Waco/Baylor as bad as the news is making it seem? I live in Tampa (alone) without any problems, and I grew up in Charlotte, N.C & Jacksonville, FL so any comparisons to Florida/NC towns would be helpful. I might do my M.A. there but I am trying to get past the idea of a small town with a lot of crime. I am a female in her 20s btw.

No, it really isn't. I went to Baylor as an undergrad and I have returned for my doctorate and I haven't had any problems, and I really live living here. Yes, there are some rougher parts of town that I would not recommend going alone at night but that comes with any city. Waco isn't that small--there are over 120,000 people that live here. If you have any specific questions feel free to reach out!

I don't think they do overnight if it's international, sadly. Luckily, the graduate office will except an emailed copy, so I'm relieved. I just need to spam him until it gets done.

Good luck! I'm guessing thats the SHU application! They notified very early so you should be hearing back in a few weeks (prior to Christmas) about a potential interview!

  3. Can you retake the GREs again? Some schools have some sort of cutoffs that they require before they even look at the bulk of your application. For example my program recommends at least a 310... which is exactly what I got thankfully. I took the GRE 2x, and as much as that wasn't very fun it may be a good idea to do so if you want to get into those programs. I was a pretty competitive applicant and Fordham and Drexel didn't even consider me--which may have been because of my lower GRE scores. Just something to think about!

  4. I am a huge forensic person but I opted for a generalized program with a mentor that specializes in externalizing problems such as substance abuse and delinquency and I couldn't be happier! There are some perks to going to a generalist program with professors who do the research you are interested such as getting a great foundation of clinical training from many different viewpoints instead of just forensics. I interviewed at some strictly forensic programs and felt that you may lack some of the general clinical training that is preferred at forensic specialized programs. For example in my program i will have over 3000 clinical hours by the time i'm done in diverse settings including some forensic ones, where a lot of schools struggle to get the 900-1000 needed for internship.

Just something to think about! also if you're a strictly research person disregard this spiel.

If you're interested in forensics, I highly recommend checking out Sam Houston. It's a great clinical program with a forensic emphasis similar to John Jay, fully funded, with incomparable internship match stats. http://www.shsu.edu/academics/psychology-and-philosophy/psychology/doctoral-program/

Sam houston unfortunately does not have great funding... you pay instate tuition. You do receive a stipend but its not enough to cover all living expenses and tuition. I interviewed there last cycle and that really deterred me. Its a great program though!

Hi all – So I’m an occasional lurker, now a first time poster! I’m planning to apply to clinical psychology PhD programs this fall. I thought I’d share my stats/background – I appreciate any and all feedback. I know that the process is incredibly competitive and hope that I have a chance. I know that increasing my quantitative GRE score would improve my application buuuut I’ve taken it three times (studying incredibly hard for 6 weeks the third time around, including with a private tutor) and cannot will myself to take it again. I imagine it will keep me out of some of the more competitive programs but hope that it’s adequate for others.

I think you have great chances getting in on your first round as long as you have a  strong personal statement that is tailored to POI interests and have a good round of interviews. your stats are fantastic! I'm currently in a clinical program and I did not score nearly as high as you did on the GRE, nor did I have as much research experience as you did--but I do now have my masters. I also went through the process twice. My advice would just be to apply to a good number of schools, because many of times the ones that you think you have no chance of getting into you do, and the ones you think are guaranteed will surprise you.

I don't think you need to take the GRE again especially with your verbal score. Most programs consider verbal scores to be more important, and if you take it again you risk a lower verbal score for a higher math score.

    Good luck!

  7. You should try Baron's test prep! There is an online program that gives you lots of practice, as well as videos that will show you some trick as well as shows you how to do the problems if you get them wrong.

  8. You should apply again next round! And probably to a few more programs! I've applied twice now... last year I applied to 15, interviewed at 2 and ultimately didn't get in.

This year I applied to 10, interviewed at 3, and have been offered acceptance at 1 so far.

Don't be discouraged! Start your research for next round now... study & retake the GRE (even though I didn't) any higher scores will help! And maybe have an old professor look over your SOP for next round!  I also took masters level courses and continued my research and I think that it definitely helps! Be persistent! The POI who accepted me I applied to and interviewed with last year and it worked out this round!

Clinical psych application process is really hard and it takes many people multiple rounds to get in!

  9. Hello everyone!

I was wondering what everyone's acceptance experiences post interviews were like? i.e. How were you notified, how soon after interviews? Is there generally a certain way people are notified?

I just had a fanastic interview experience at one of my top choices and I have been frantically checking my phone & email waiting on {hopefully} good news

Hey y'all, for those of you who applied to GMU (if any) has your application status changed? Mine changed sometime between 4pm - 10 pm from "Out for Decision" to "Complete." Any idea what this may mean?

Mine says that too... But I haven't heard anything. I'm assuming this means that they have already sent out their interviews... I saw several people post that they had received interviews.

  11. I also applied to Alabama... It looks like some people have already been notified but it was by their POI. So there may still be hope!

I have received 2 interview invitations so far which I am ecstatic about! One of them I interviewed with last year, so I feel that it is a good sign that I was invited to interview once again!

Good luck to everyone! I have been checking my email every 10 minutes and will be for the next couple of weeks so I understand the stressfulness. I do know that several of the schools that I applied to have already sent out invitations. But going through the process again this year I expected it. Honestly the whole process is so weird because the program is looking for "fit" you could be more qualified than another applicant but not "fit" as well. So keep your heads up!

  12. @DaniD who are you applying to at Baylor? Im guessing Dolan for PTSD?

Your scores & research experiences &GPA are outstanding... I would suggest editing some of that if thats what you were going to submit to the professors... Like talking about your poster I would say something like contributed to... etc. I know this is late but I'm hoping the application process went well! I applied to most of those schools either last year or this year so I could probably help you out!

I interviewed at Baylor and SMU last Spring, and worked in Dolan's research lab for a year & a half

Interview invitation from LSU's clinical PhD program! Deadline Dec 1, submitted Nov. 12. Personalized email. Interview will be Jan 28-29.

    :)

I have a question! What makes an interview make-or-break? For example, what do they want and not want to see/hear? Does anyone know the average number of applicants invited to interview at a clinical PhD program compared to the number accepted? I know it's different for every school, but ballpark number?

@BritAlysse Congrats on the interview! Last year when I interviewed there were about 7 people there for my POI (at both schools). Don't say anything about being a clinician... And if they ask you what you will do if you don't get into this program say you will go do research... I told them I would go get my masters and I got a really funny look. PhD programs are tricky like that! Make sure you read through some of your POI's publications and basically tell him/her that you want to be doing EXACTLY what they are currently doing/are interested in. If you say you want to extend it say in the future... You want to make sure that you fit with their research interests even if you have a vested interest in something else.

  14. DO NOT go for your PhD unless you have considerable research experience/ IF YOU DONT WANT TO DO RESEARCH!!! It seems to me that you want to do something that is more practice oriented which phd programs HATE! Literally if you mention the words "i want to be a clinician" know that you will automatically be eliminated from the application process. Trust me... Its happened to me before. PsyD programs are great... Try applying to Baylor~ they are fully funded (but they do require a dissertation). Also I don't know much about MSWs but I'm pretty sure you can achieve your goals with that as well. Or an LPC program

I'm applying to work with John Edens. His research is pretty similar to what I'm doing now.

Looks like we are all applying to Edens haha! I applied to work with him last year too... He said that he gets 80-100 applications for his lab per year so I'm not super hopeful.

This is my second year applying... I am hoping to get into a program that has some sort of Forensic Psychology relevance, as I want to be doing Forensic Assessments.

I am currently enrolled in George Washington's Forensic Psychology Masters. So if any of you want to talk about that program I would be glad to speak with you!

I applied to 12 schools last year and interviewed at 3... I was the alternate at one school but ultimately didn't get in.

This year I applied to 10...

Sam Houston, Baylor, Texas A&M, University of Houston, Drexel, Fordham, George Mason, Alabama, John Jay, and Emory.

Most of these programs have a forensic psych concentration or have a professor that is interested in psychological assessment.

Good luck to everyone in this niche of forensic psych applying! Its really hard to get into... I'm not expecting much out of my applications this year as I decided in October to reapply so I didn't have time to retake my GREs. Don't get disheartened if you don't receive interviews/acceptances your first year! Most of us have to go through this process multiple times as there are so many applications.. Last year Drexel had 600 applications for 7 spots. But I also am happy that I had this year in between UG and reapplying... Just looking at the differences in my applications from last year, I learned so much and was able to accumulate a lot of life experience!

Good luck everyone! I know it is a really stressful time! Last year I started getting notified in January for interviews if that helps at all for a sense of a time line!
