Does it seem like there's not a lot of activity going in the education room on this form? There seems to be only like four or five results everyday when some programs are getting so many.

I'm just finding it hard to be patient I guess *sigh

The value of patience as a virtue is definitely lost on those who are waiting for a life-defining decision! I am going to watch The Lake House tonight - really helps with waiting. The school that interviewed me said I would know the results next week. Next. Week. (*hyperventilating. again!).

    How did your interviews go?

Unfortunately, these double standards are ubiquitous at HGSE. They advocate for collaboration versus competition in education, but they make their own students apply (i.e. compete) for spots at courses. Many professors will seem super friendly and supportive but they will not be genuinely interested in what you are doing. A professor once told me she was "super excited" about my project and after talking to her for 2 more minutes I realized that she didn't know what my project was.

Again, I am not trying to be negative; no institution is perfect (not even Harvard) and I just think it's important to provide a balanced perspective of the pros and cons, as I have focused more on the pros in my previous posts. I have learned an awful lot at HGSE, my overall experience has been extremely positive and I would do this program again in a heartbeat. But I also wish someone had told me this kind of things before I came here; I would have still come, but I would have been more "mentally prepared" :)

Oh my goodness, that sucks (about the professor). I would much rather a professor ignore me and tell me I am stupid, so I could prove myself and earn their support than hypocrisy... Generally, as a higher ed scholar, I feel that honesty is a higher virtue than any kind of showy student-centered approach.

Still, do you feel you have made the necessary connections? Do you feel that the program has given you a boost strong enough, let us say, a truly Harvardian one?

  3. Do you ever feel that it would be great if your friends were really, really aware of how horrible waiting for the results is? I wish someone took me out so I wouldn't be browsing Grad Cafe and logging into my official e-mail address I used for application on SATURDAY when I know nothing will come until Monday, best case scenario!

I'm taking my first online course in years, and I'm starting to remember why I hate them I'm already DONE. I had my first quiz, and I got 60% because I missed two questions. It was a SYLLABUS quiz.

It's amazing how many interpretations words can have. For instance, on the quiz there was a question like "TRUE or FALSE: You can make up an exam if there are circumstances that are preventing you from taking it that are out of your control." On the syllabus, it says that you are not allowed to make up exams unless you have documented proof that something happened. I had no idea how she wanted me to answer the question. I said the answer was TRUE and I think I got it wrong. Did she want me to say FALSE because she didn't mention anything about documentation? I don't know. Arghhh

OMG. A syllabus quiz is soooooo... both cool and ridiculous in its stupidity.

  5. Now, really, I believe this idea of being penniless is spoiling our waiting game. Seriously, to anyone who is there in Cambridge, Is it t h a t bad? I mean there is a stipend and all. Is it bad if you live with a roommate? And Harvard housing?! I cannot get properly exhited about Harvard if I think that the Struggle Times are coming...

Please, pardon any confusion I my have caused by my recent post. For some reason, the admissions rep. I spoke with called me this afternoon. I was driving and almost slammed on brakes. Anyway, she called to correct what she told me. Interviews are in person!! She must have to record the name and number for all calls. I'm glad there has been clarification, and again I beg your pardon!!

That makes sense. Still, calling you back... I mean, really, calling your back?! Wow. They are professional.

Definitely a good sign.  UofM is a laid back kind of atmosphere so I'm not surprised your interview was informal and relaxed.  If you felt comfortable and like you connected on ideas you should feel positive.  Good luck!  I love Ann Arbor!

Thank you! Now I am going not to think about that for a while for my own sake. :) I will contact you to talk about AA once I know the results.

hi, i'm a master's applicant, and it turns out one of my schools has interviews as well, which seems unusual to me (I thought mostly it was doctoral programs that had interviews). I've had job interviews, and (a long time ago) scholarship interviews, but not a grad school interview before! Any advice on what to expect? thanks!

I have just found this, maybe it will be helpful.

    For other 2016 applicants,

I called Stanford's GSE admissions office today.  They said that there is no formal interview process and we should get our admissions decisions by mid-February.

I can't decide if not having interviews makes me more or less nervous...on one hand, interviews are extremely stressful, but on the other there's no way of knowing where you stand until you get their final decision.

    Good luck everyone!

Thank you! This is extremely helpful!

No word from Harvard or Stanford. I was thinking of writing to Harvard but not sure how wise that would be.

Thinking the same thing (I haven't even gotten the 'fill out the financial aid' form e-mail). No idea how to phrase my letter though. Tell me if you come up with smth.

I don't even want to think of the state I'd be in if I'd been checking since I submitted my apps.... I was a regular here under a different account when I last applied to schools in 2012. I totally forgot about it until last week and have been a ball of nerves ever since. I might need to cut down to a "once a day" limit myself...

Doesn't work, unless you keep yourself VERY BUSY (that's what I am doing).

On the results page of Hgse, there were some that got admitted! Some were for interview. pure mathematics seemed to fairly popular with four acceptancez. Congrats to all! No news for masters as of yet.. ^_^

What do you mean by 'the results page'?

My thank you was about an hour after the Skype interview (our interview ran long and I had to be somewhere...so it was after my next appt.). It basically said:

    "Dear Dr. ___,

I just wanted to thank you so much for taking the time to meet with me today. I enjoyed our discussion on [research] and I am excited about the opportunity of working with you in the future." After the interview, he wanted another Skype session to finish our discussion, so I just made reference to setting up another time after that.

    Hope this helps. :)

It is really helpful! What if I might not be working with this particular professor? How could I phrase it in a more subtle way? Looking forward to discussing... talking... ?!

    Hey,

I am also applying to the Child Studies program. I emailed the educational coordinator of the department about the admission results and here is what i got:

We are still in the process of reviewing applications and plan on making invitations to students being given serious consideration around the 28th of January.”

Does it mean that they will send out results around jan 28 or the interview invitation? I'm confused.

The word 'invitation' can only refer to interviews. Good luck! Child Studies - you mean PhD? Or Masters?
