I was accepted via email, but my status has not changed on the website. It still says "in review." Last year, accepted applicants got notified on different days. Please don't lose hope. It's not over until it's (officially) over.

I can claim one of the UT Austin acceptances! It's my first acceptance, and I'm feeling incredibly grateful.

I feel like I'm going crazy too... I've been having nightmares about getting rejected, my POIs saying they can't take any more students, etc... I check my email at least 15-20 times a day, and even though I know I should stop, it's really hard.

A UCLA acceptance was posted on the results board! The applicant received their email on January 17th. Congratulations! Hopefully the next wave of acceptances come soon.
-
I was hoping we would get more notifications from different schools today, but I guess not. :/
-
Rutgers Yay! Congratulations!
-
I can claim one of the UCSB rejections, but I have an interview at another school next week, so I'm still trying to stay optimistic.
-
That's awesome! Congratulations!

Congrats to the individuals who got accepted to USC and Iowa yesterday! It's nice to finally see acceptances on the results board.

Just know that you're not alone. I'm feeling antsy as well, but it's possible that we'll hear (good) news when we least expect it.

UC Irvine has also sent out an interview invitation, even though they have not conducted interviews for their applicants in the past. I'm also curious about this, but I don't think it's a bad sign. They might just want to know about you/your research interests better.
-
I didn't know Chicago did interviews! We also have a notification from Rutgers on the results board. Ah, okay. I didn't apply to UVA, but that's good to know. Thanks for sharing!
-
I agree with kris10mb. I'm not sure what time zone the website runs on, but it's possible that the applicant was an international student.
-
An interview at UCSF was just posted on the results board. Congrats! Please feel free to claim and/or share more information if you would like.

I'm getting a little anxious, even though I know it's way too early to be worrying about admission decisions. This time last year, we had notifications of interviews at UVA, Rice, and Notre Dame. So far, however, nothing about those schools has been posted on the results board.

Lots of people applying to NYU (as expected).

Hi, everyone! I wanted to go ahead and get this thread started. An interview for the history of sociology and science (HSS) at UPenn has been posted on the results board, and another user was recently contacted by a professor at Penn State with positive feedback about his application. Congrats to both! If the admission committees are on the same timeline as last year, it's possible that we'll hear back from the University of Virginia and Rice very soon. Feel free to share results and discuss as more decisions are sent out.

I also applied to Rutgers (for sociology, not education). I think it would be helpful to contact the department by email or phone and let them know your situation. Just tell them what you told us. "My school in Brazil does not send official translated transcripts, but I have taken my official transcript to a certified translator and uploaded it to the supporting materials page on my application." I don't know how strict they are about that, but letting them know won't hurt.

^ That's really frustrating. If you don't see anything by tonight/tomorrow morning, it might be a good idea to send her a friendly reminder. What is everyone doing to occupy their time while they wait to hear back from schools? I'm trying to catch up on some reading and do other leisure activities, but I really wish I could fast forward to January/February.

It would benefit you to try and retake the GRE to raise your verbal score a few points.
-
Nice! I haven't contacted any POIs yet, but I will soon. I just want to make sure that the faculty I list in my personal statement are able and willing to mentor a graduate student with the research interests that I have. Cool. We have some similar interests, and it looks like we'll both be applying to Rutgers and Penn (but not HSS for me).
-
Nice. Those are great interests, and it looks like you have a lot of experience! You're definitely ahead of the game. Have most of the POIs been receptive to your emails?

Hi everyone! I wanted to create this thread for (Fall 2017) PhD sociology applicants to get to know each other a little better. Who else is applying this cycle? What are your research interests, and what are some of the schools that you're looking at? I'll start. (Broadly speaking) I'm interested in race/ethnicity and mental health. Some of the schools I'm looking at include: Penn, UT Austin, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, Rutgers, and Vanderbilt.

Sociology PhD Application - Do I need a MA???
csot replied to AgumonIsAPokemon's topic in Sociology Forum
You will see successful applicants who do hold an MA in sociology, but people pursue master's degrees before applying to PhD programs for different reasons. It is definitely not necessary to have one before you apply. If you have good GRE scores, a high GPA, strong letters of recommendation, an interesting personal statement, and a decent research fit with multiple professors, then you should be fine. What is most important is to apply widely so you have a better chance of getting accepted. Hope that helps!
