  1. To those of you who have received letters, are they coming with reviews this year?
  2. Ah! My stomach just dropped. No email here yet, but I expect that my palms will continue to sweat until it arrives... gross.
  3. Do any of you have to make NDSEG-dependent grad program decisions by April 15th this year? Seems like a tight turnaround if you want to discuss your decision with prospective advisors...
  4. Just got off of the phone with my buddy Barbara at Sti-Tec, who said that they plan to make final announcements by the 13th. Apparently they're still reviewing applications.
  5. Has anybody else received a request for updated education information?
  6. Just got an email from STI-Tec informing me that my application "was reviewed by a panel of Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) for [my] discipline. After review, [my] application was chosen to move forward to the final step in the process: the DoD Panel Review." The final decisions should be made by March 31st, and award letters will go out shortly thereafter. Eep! I feel like this information sets me up for a bigger let-down.... Fingers crossed.
  7. dukelist.duke.edu/search?q=category%3ARentals and offcampushousing.duke.edu/property/search have been reasonably helpful, though I have had better luck with individual rental companies. Apple Realty and Acorn and Oak seem to be popular among Duke grad students. Do you know anybody in your department who may be able to view properties for you before you sign a lease? Sometimes things seem much more charming online than in person...
  8. Ah! I sent my first e-mail from my new "@duke.edu" address, today! So official.
  9. The results survey is often a good place to gauge whether offers have been extended. With respect to Pitt, I know they have made a few decisions at this point - I just declined their offer, so I hope that spot is now available for somebody else! Good luck!
  10. Congrats, future academics! I accepted an offer from Duke last week. (But am dragging my feet about declining offers elsewhere...)
  11. Ahh! Batting 100%, so far! Now for the biggie... heading to my top choice tomorrow. *fingers crossed so hard*
  12. Skype interviews are the mullets of interviews.
  13. Oh man. The first acceptance feels so good. (Especially when it comes at the end of your first interview! Cheezin all day. )
  14. Congratulations!!!!! I can't imagine the excitement you must be feeling
  15. Is anybody going to the UCSB EEMB Grad Student Symposium/recruitment event next weekend? Have you been told what else we should prepare for?
  16. Is anybody here going to the UCSB EEMB Grad Student Symposium/Recruitment event next weekend? Have you gotten any information about what else we should prepare for?
  17. Whoa. How many interviews are you guys doing per visit? I just got one of my schedules and I'm set up for 12 in one day...plus another over Skype with a faculty member who will be away during my recruitment visit.
  18. Whoa. How may interviews are you guys doing per visit? I just got one of my schedules and I'm set up for 12 in one day... plus another over Skype with a faculty member who will be away during my recruitment weekend.
  19. The call came from the PI with whom I've been speaking throughout the application process. He mentioned that they had received so few applications between Dec. 1st and Jan. 15th that they had decided to start sending out interview invitations. Good luck! More on the way, hopefully!
  20. Has anybody been invited to a recruitment weekend that does not include interviews? I've been invited to attend a grad student symposium/recruitment event at UCSB -- other activities include banquet attendance, lab tours and tide-pooling, but no formal interviews. Thoughts?
  21. I did apply, and I was invited to interview this morning (eep!). The PI with whom I have been communicating said that they extended the deadline, but hadn't received many additional applications after the original Dec. 1 deadline. Who knows? Recruitment events are the weekends of February 6th and 19th. Good luck!
  22. Just saw that the application deadline for Duke's PhD program in biology has been extended...by a month and a half... Not enough decent applicants by the original Dec. 1 deadline, or am I reading too far into this?
