Has anyone interviewed with NYU Visual Culture: Costume Studies? I saw a few interviews listed on the results page and wanted to talk to someone. Please PM me. I have completed an interview with them, and would be willing to share my experiences, but I am looking to speak with someone else who has also completed their interview with this particular program.

It's been days and this has over 80 views and no replies, so I thought I would throw in my thoughts. I have no specific suggestions, only areas to explore. MA fellowships are difficult to find. I'm not even sure if you really mean a fellowship, or just a paid position in your field while pursuing an MA (like a paid internship), but I would look at the websites for all local museums. If no positions are advertised as open, look through their staff listing and see who is listed as an intern or holding a fellowship then contact the museum to see when the current term is up and openings will be posted. Also, check for local societies involved in your area of research to see if they offer anything.

So...I need to share with people. I think I just got accepted to graduate school, and I'm sitting here in shock, afraid to tell my family, friends and coworkers in case I am wrong. I did tell my SO. I signed into the school's system to check my application status and it has gone from the little green circle that means pending to a small green check mark, which means accepted. However, I am still waiting for communication from the department before telling anyone else, or marking the results page. Also, I still have another interview, and one application pending. But either way, I'm really going to do this after years of planning for it, and Red Riding Hood's lyrics from Into the Woods keep running through my head, "and it [sic] made me feel excited; well, excited and scared." I may go cry and/or puke now...

Excellent questions! I wish I had asked about grad student space and advising. It seems so obvious now. I asked about funding, research trips, GTA/GRA positions for MA students, how often classes meet, current research programs, local collections that they use and that I could review online, and how many students they are accepting. I made sure that this information wasn't clearly listed online before asking about anything. The interview was for a one year, fairly small program, and lasted 20 minutes. If accepted, I think I may reply that I have a few more questions and I will ask some of yours.

I had a skype interview with a school last week that I think went very well, and they said that I should hear a response in a few days. I'm open to answering PMs, if anyone has questions about skyping for an interview, or the questions that I was asked. I have another skype interview this Friday with a second school.

The MA Art History deadline was January 8. Which program are you thinking of applying to attend? The "graduate diploma" program is a certificate program, not a graduate degree such as an Masters or Doctorate.

I agree. You can tell who cares about being called Dr./Prof. because they sign their names that way. My email formality declines based on the response. I always start off formal Dear Dr./Prof XXX. If I say "Dear" and they respond "Hi", or I end with "regards" and they just put their name then I mimic their formality/informality in my reply. It annoys me to sign my name XXX and have someone respond with Mr/s. Last Name...it makes me think that they are trying to hard. Also, it annoys me when I use my middle name and they keep using my first name...did you not read what I wrote?! Last, one day we want to be their peers; let's interact like peers and call them by their first name. You were deferential to begin with and that's what matters.

I'm feeling fairly pessimistic about my applications this year. Got a rejection notice this weekend, so feeling pretty bummed but also inspired to keep working. I either let them tell me no and accept their opinion, or find a way to make someone say yes.

I'm not sure about the dexterity portion. For the color test, they may have you take this test: http://www.colormunki.com/game/huetest_kiosk (also fun to pass the time while waiting for application responses). You have to see colors correctly to match hues for conservation painting, and not everyone can match colors. Try the test out and become comfortable with it.

I see that someone received an interview with Courtauld. Do you mind sharing which option? PM me if you want to keep it private.

I've been looking at the results page and searching each school's name to see what was reported in the past. With this method, you can see if two groups reported contact a week apart or so, if interviews have been offered, what month students have been contacted, etc. One of my schools typically contacts students over two weeks to schedule interviews. In the past students reported contact one week then a second group reported the next week. The first wave was contacted last week, so if I'm not contacted this week then I am going to count myself out for that program.

I'm in a similar boat. I only applied to four programs, and I've been wondering if I should have applied to more, but these are the perfect programs for my interests. As for the waiting, I'm working on myself overall, so even if I fail this year then next year I'll be an even better applicant. Also, it's provides a confidence boost for interviews. I keep studying my interests and looking for calls for papers that will accept non-graduate/higher academic submissions. I've also been brushing up on my foreign language skills, focusing on my diet and exercise, creating a new website, improving my musical skills on two instruments, and taking once a week introductory sewing classes all in addition to working 40-45 hours per week. If nothing else, I'm almost too tired to worry about the part of the process I can't control.

For those of you who have gone through this before, or just happen to know the answers: do schools interview all accepted applicants prior to acceptance? If I am not invited for an interview, should I just consider myself rejected without a rejection notice? Do people get accepted without interviewing? These questions occurred to me as I see people contacted by programs that I have applied to attend, and I wait. I know some programs stagger interviews based on best to worst applicants. However, I assume there will come a time when no interview means it's just a matter of waiting for the rejection letter.

I received an invitation to the Courtauld's event at the CAA conference, and... I had already decided not attend the conference this year, so I could hoard my vacation days for possible interview trips. Now, I could register late, but I have a work events on February 4, and 5 that I shouldn't miss. Especially, since it's not an actual interview. However, I see it as a missed opportunity to make a good impression in a semi-casual atmosphere that could influence my chance for an interview. Sigh, oh well, moving on.

I applied to The Courtauld. My recommendation requests all went through exactly as they should. I even wrote to the school yesterday to confirm the letters had been received and an affirmative reply came this morning. Perhaps, your recommender needs to check his spam folder. Have you reviewed your application to make sure you spelled his email address correctly? I agree with contacting them to ask for an alternative way to submit a letter. I'm sorry that I can't be of more help.

I attended KU, but graduated a few years ago. There were no DecArts focused courses when I attended KU. Bard is my number one choice. I also applied to NYU, but the Visual Culture program not the Art History program. I thought about Winterthur, but they took five months to respond to my inquiry for additional information. So I decided against Winterthur, even though it's supposed to be the best and all students are fully funded.

19th and 20th century textiles/clothing, and decorative arts here. I applied to 4 MA programs, two in the US and two in the UK. The last application is due at the end of this month; I plan to submit my final application later this week, and then the waiting really begins. I'm starting to think that I should have applied to more schools, but I can only attend one. Also, the schools I chose had the programs/instructors that fit my interests. I had enough of being in a department with no instructors interested in my area during my UG studies.

Everything was perfect...except the writing example. What a piece of crap. I didn't have a writing sample from my UG program, so I wrote one for the applications. It was the most forced, well researched, piece of crap and it's such an important part of the applications. After I sent it, I noticed that I left a foot note labeled (cite source). WTH!?! I'm already counting myself out for those programs, but we shall see. One application needed a shorter writing sample, so I broke down the longer piece of crap. I took a different approach to the research without having to rewrite everything. My new writing sample is AMAZING. I could quite easily make this second essay longer, and it is perfectly focused for the programs that I am applying to attend...but it's too late. The applications are in except for this last one. It's my second choice so it wouldn't be bad to get accepted to only that program. I just try not to think about it too much.
