Can I ask what interview dates you were given for Caltech BioE? I received interview dates for Feb 25, 26, 27 (not sure if it's all 3 or if I have to pick one), but these dates conflict with Stanford. I saw on the results survey that someone got a Caltech BioE interview for Feb 4-6, so I'm hoping that they may be able to reschedule.

BTW, do you have any idea about the post-interview acceptance rate of caltech bioE?

    Mine is also Feb 4-6

  3. After getting two rejection from UCB and Stanford BioE, I finally got an invitation from Caltech BioE, which was surprising to me.. I thought I fit UCB and Stanford much more, considering the POI's research and my research background. But I forgot to submit my official transcripts to Stanford and I missed my official Toefl to UCB, which might be the reason for rejection.

Congrats! Are you domestic or international? I haven't received any email from the umich EEB but my POI told me today that they are making final decisions on inviting to interviews so he wanted to skype with me as soon as possible. btw I'm an international student.

I am an international student. But I am in US. So I will attend the on campus interview.

One question, mate! Does your application, by any chance, still appears as incomplete due to the lack of the official transcript? I sent mine since november, but it seems they haven't received it yet...

I have a strong delivery proof b/c the package was signed for by their administrative assistant, but they refuse to answer questions related to status of documents <_<

I think they haven't updated applicants' status.

Ahh I'm anxious too lol! My heart throbbing over here thinking about Stanford haha

You are also applying for 2016 Fall? not 2017 Fall?

Yes, I just want to know the result from Stanford as soon as possible..Even if it is not good, I can arrange my interview for MIT at 2.29. Cause last year Stanford's interview was at 2.26-28. I worry about the conflicts between them.

If an invite specifies casual dress, then dressing formally (i.e. a suit) will not impress anyone. Our recruiting event is casual, and when the occasional student wears a suit anyways they stick out, and not in a "Oh they know how to be professional" way.

Dressing professionally does not automatically mean wearing a suit, especially not in EEB. You can look put together but still casual with a button down and/or sweater, a clean pair of khakis/chinos or even black/dark jeans, and a decent but comfortable pair of shoes or boots (basically anything besides sneakers and hiking boots).

If you really want to wear a suit, do have it pressed beforehand and try to avoid crinkling it up during travel. Showing up in a wrinkly suit jacket counteracts the professional image you're hoping to create by wearing it.

Thank you so much.  I will carefully think about it. I always wear jeans and hoodies... Probably I will wear a button down shirt with sweater and a pair of khakis..

Congrats! Personally I do think that it is always best to dress a little more formally than required. It shows you care and know how to be professional. However, I'm not terribly surprised that an ecology interview might be more casual... When I went to the ESA meeting, no one wore a full-on suit (except a few students), and a few people presented in jeans and/or hiking shoes. Not what I was expecting for a national conference!

Perhaps there is a side to ecologists that always wants to be field-ready... ha! :)

Thank you so much for your information! Haha. I think I will dress formally anyway!

SInce I applied to two of your choices, here is how two of the schools work (at least how it worked in 2014)

Rice will not contact you for an interview, they will accept you by the end of January  and invite you to an Open House kind of thing in the spring or reject you in the spring.  One of my favorite visits - they really show they want you to attend!

MIT will send invites to interviews probably this week.   They accept 80% of whom they interview.   If they interview you, they want you unless they discover you don't mesh well in person. I believe mine came via email this week on a Thursday, not sure if that will hold true this week.  Interview process is really amazing, you have to do a poster presentation and then sit around with world famous scientists and talk science.

Do you have any idea about the acceptance rate for microbiology@ MIT?

I emailed the program coordinator, she told me that there would be ~25 interviewees for 7 positions. Since they could not 100% guarantee all the students accept their offers so I imagine they will give more than 7 offers.

    Thank you!
