Sky Pilot, congrats on your prior acceptance -- and that's funny a funny writeup =). I'm sitting in class right now, still checking my email for Yale =P.
-
Don't get me started I've even thought about skipping classes today in anticipation, LoL
-
Also bear in mind: Every year there's at least a few phonies that put up fake results to rattle everyone's cage as a sick practical joke, so don't take everything as gospel-truth per se...

This was really funny, hehe

Yoder FTW.

If the past is any indication, we may very likely hear from Yale tomorrow! Someone on here posted that they visited Yale on March 2nd, and Melissa in the office there had indicated that they wanted to be done by this Friday (tomorrow), in order for faculty to be gone during the Spring Break next week.

A good mix

At what point do you break down and call/email them?

You must be thinking PhD level, in which case you're right -- but I'm applying to the Div school's MDiv (not the University's PhD, nor the Div school's ThD). -

Thanks for the tips, guys. I may wait until I hear from Yale (hopefully this Friday!!), then get ahold of Duke. -
Yeah, my wife is even more stressed by the wait than I am, I know what you mean!
-
I would most certainly contact them.

Woah -- weird.

Congrats!! Hi endingtheletter, Man, it's such a relief to see your message. I've been waiting to hear back from Duke on scholarship info as well, and I was worried that maybe all the Methodists had already gotten their scholarships, and all the rest of us were left in the dust 0=). So that's a helpful bit of info. You applied to the MDiv, I presume? When do you think Duke will get back with us? You should also see my other thread on this exact topic: "At what point do you break down and call/email them?"

You are a credit to your kind . My in-laws on both sides are all Baptists all around (that is, my wife's mom's family and my wife's dad's family). But ironically, despite my drawing on many traditions (as noted above), the Baptist tradition is the one with which I have least affinities (or sympathies), hehe . Not all Baptists are lost -- God forgives .

Here's my scenario. I was accepted by Duke Div on 2/25, and asked them when scholarships would be awarded. They said they were hoping by "next week" (at that time). Well, that "next week" has come and gone, and I haven't heard back. I see two possibilities: (1) Scholarships haven't been awarded yet, and I need to be patient a few more days or a week or whatever. Or, (2) Scholarships have been awarded and recipients have been notified, and I simply wasn't one of them. If it's the latter case, I wouldn't suspect that they would go through all the trouble to notify all the accepted applicants who did NOT get a scholarship -- they'd presumably just not contact them about it. So I won't even get contacted AT ALL, in that case (and will be waiting indefinitely). So, how long do I wait before I try to contact them, to ask? Perusing these boards and the "Results" tab above, many people seem to be buckling down and calling/emailing the departments, to simply ask for news -- and successfully get the information they were looking for, without having to wait any longer. The reason I ask is because one of the other programs I was admitted to wants me to submit a seminary housing request form immediately (the deadline has passed), but I have to send my non-refundable deposit along with it to hold my place. However, I'm not certain I'm going there yet, because I don't have all my funding offers in-hand yet, to make an educated decision.

I know getmeout's original post here sounded a bit strong ("ignorance or arrogance"), but I must say that generally speaking on the whole, in a nice and polite way, he's technically correct. Hermeneutically, none of us are merely "objective" or "neutral," or the one-step-further, "simply Christian" or "merely following the Bible" or Jesus, or what-have-you. We all come from a "tradition" that shapes and informs us, even if we reject that tradition in the end (hence my original post). But even so-called "non-denoms" are in fact of the "free church" or "restorationist" or "primitivist" or "home church" or "charismatic" traditions, etc. Or, "I have all these hermeneutical traditions, but I'm not ecclesiastically affiliated." As for me, I was raised by a Catholic-turned-Protestant mother in a Methodist church. But in middle school I fell into the charismatic evangelical tradition, and in high school into Reformed theology. In college I went through a phase of critical biblical scholarship, but after studying more hermeneutics and philosophy of science (which exegesis is), I began to have sympathies for more tradition-affirming sensibilities (Anglo-Catholic-Orthodox). But as a cherry on top, I love Hauerwas and the anabaptist emphasis on the church-as-polis. So, I describe myself as a Reformed Anabaptist Charismatic Anglo-Catholic =). Depending on which graduate school I go to, I will "plug in" to a tradition more intentionally, and begin the ordination process and such -- Presbyterian or Anglican most likely. Hey, just like Stanley Hauerwas! And what a coincidence -- you attend Duke! You're a Quaker, aren't you? I can tell Anathema!

Congratulations, newmexico! That's excellent news!!

Just got my acceptance to Princeton Sem's M.Div. program, with approximately 80% tuition covered. Not bad! This'll be my new backup option if I don't get good funding at Duke. Hooray! =)

Just out of curiosity: What's everyone's religious tradition that you come from? And maybe by contrast, what tradition do you think most matches you (if not the tradition you come from)? Or maybe a tradition you're headed towards, in contrast to your past religious tradition.

Dillskyplayer, I can sympathize. In the Fall, when I was still trying to decide whether to apply to philosophy PhD programs or theology MA programs, the stress was palpable. The GRE on top of it all... I was literally having anxiety attacks during the course of a normal day when nothing provoked them. I was changing my son's diaper once, not thinking of anything stressful at all, and one came on. This grad-school process is more of a hazing ritual than anything else =P.

Apparently last year they released the decisions the Friday before the weekend. However, this year with the SNOWMAGGEDON snowstorm, they extended the application deadline from Jan 15 to Jan 18, so they may not finish early.
-
Congratulations! Duke told me I would hear about funding in a week, but it's been longer -- so hope for the best, but expect the worst (as far as getting feedback sooner than later).

Duke Div. School's Th.D. applicants this year?
Phenomenologist replied to theoedu's topic in Religion
That's tremendously helpful, thanks for clarifying with up-to-date info!! -
When they called me last week, it was Friday afternoon in the 4 o'clock hour (EST). So, right now it's Friday afternoon in the 4 o'clock hour (EST), and I haven't heard from them yet =P. I don't think it's bad news necessarily (I didn't get funded), so much as they haven't notified about it yet. (But then again, they wouldn't call 100+ accepted applicants to tell them that they *didn't* get funding...) Maybe I should call =P.
