  1. April Wilson's German Quickly is an exceptional book for learning German on your own. A peer of mine studied over the summer before his 1st year using that book and some vocabulary flashcards and passed his German language proficiency exam that Fall. I will be doing the same this summer if anyone is interested in also getting the book and perhaps having some sort of online reading circle. Part of the reading circle could be communicating in German, which I personally believe is important for understanding. AnonymousMonad- My thought would be that a knowledge of "language-for-living", as you say, would help one maintain their understanding of sentence structure and grammar. Having to construct one's own sentences in dialogue is wonderful practice. Also- if one is serious about wanting to study German texts, it would be nice to be able to speak the language with those you might be in contact with when trying to hunt down documents! Personally, I would love to do some work with the Husserl archives in the future, and am maintaining my speaking knowledge of Dutch for that purpose. It is much easier to navigate Flanders when you speak Dutch.
  2. Yay! Congrats! One of my mentors got his PhD there. It's a great program
  3. I've been waiting for one of these for so long! THANK YOU! Thank you! I'm all out of upvotes, but I wish I could give this a million! You are so kind!
  4. After being depressed last week about not hearing from USF, I, my fiancé, and one of our housemates drove from Atlanta to Raleigh to see an NHL game and get my mind off things, and half an hour ago while driving back to ATL- after being in the car since 6:30 this morning- I received my acceptance!!!!! I have been shaky and weepy and unable to stop smiling since. I feel in a way that I don't deserve this, and yet I also know how hard I worked for it. I'm just glad I can finally start planning the next 5 years of my life!
  5. I'm all out of upvotes, but YES. This whole process is nearly designed to instigate insanity.
  6. Seems likely considering there are no other posts, but we are also the only two who seem to have applied to USF on the forum, so who knows!
  7. Are you the presidential fellowship USF admit?! Yay! Congrats! I'm anxiously awaiting a reply from them.
  8. Thanks! I wasn't doubting that it was real, just wanted to know what time of day they got the email. It got posted pretty late at night.
  9. Can anyone claim the USF acceptance?
  10. Did anyone else apply to the University of South Florida? I was told they are releasing decisions this week.
  11. Well, one rejection down, so I'm also "halfway there"
  12. Do we think universities will dole out any decisions tomorrow? I know my school isn't closed tomorrow (unfortunately).
  13. That sounds an awful lot like an acceptance to me! Maybe not formally, but still. Congrats!
  14. That's so funny, that's exactly how mine is set up! I have "On Husserlian Phenomenology", "On James' Influence on Husserl", "On James' Method", etc. It has made all the difference.
  15. I've found that breaking down my thesis into essentially a series of smaller papers is helpful. That way I can say I want to finish a rough draft of section A by X date, this is my page limitation for that section, and then I can send that section out for feedback. It gives me a sense of accomplishment too when I get overwhelmed. I can say, "well I already have this, this and this done. I'm getting there!" It also helps because when I go to campus I only bring books relating to section A, and I'm not trying to drag a library with me...
  16. I don't know if anyone else here applied to USF, but I contacted them just to make sure all of my materials were in order and was told they will make their decisions around the third week of February.
  17. Rejection from Emory. Not altogether unexpected.
  18. That makes a lot of sense considering the early notification, and how exciting! I'll just pretend that I haven't heard anything because I already live here and they don't have to fly me anywhere. Also- when you come down I'm sure they will get you in contact with a lot of people, but in addition to that some people from our class and their significant others tend to go out after class to some of our local philosophy friendly pubs, so when it gets closer let's exchange info and you can come along! There are a lot of first years in the class, and they have been super supportive of me during my applications. I'm sure they would love to meet you.
  19. Woah congratulations! I definitely just immediately ended my phone conversation so I can keep my line open in case they call me. (Sorry, mom!) If you do decide to go there, you'll love it. I'm taking a PhD level course in the Philosophy department right now, and everyone is super cooperative and supportive. It's a great environment to work in.
  20. Hurrah! Another continental! I am finishing a Theological Studies M.A. right now, but my background is in both religion and philosophy. I did my philosophy B.A. in Leuven, Belgium where the Husserl archives are and I'm currently writing my Masters thesis on William James and Husserl. Where are you applying?
  21. It might also be from other places, but there is a card in cards against humanity that is "Step one:____ Step two: _____ Step 3: Profit"
  22. I like the cards against humanity reference in plan A2!
