Enjoy Austin! It is the best. I went to UT for undergrad, so let me know if you LJB people ever need suggestions or advice on anything Austin-related. I haven't lived there since 2010 but visit occasionally and hopefully can try to help. It is a really fun city!

GradCafe7235 reacted to RCtheSS in Fall 2016 Decisions - MSW (Masters in Social Work)
I'm still considering myself undecided, only because I would prefer to have every admission decision in hand before signing any forms of enrollment. I am also a dual degree applicant, so that's a huge factor for making my ultimate decision: I would prefer the option to complete both master degrees over one.
But just now, I received acceptance from UT-Austin's public affairs program! The ability to complete the dual degrees, plus the cost of living in Austin, along with the national recognition of UT-Austin has moved it to my top choice. Now I need to schedule an actual campus visit.

Just got my package from USC with Dean's Merit full-tuition scholarship! Feeling excited but weird, and sort of eyeing it in the middle of the table like it might get up and run away if unattended.

At this point, I'm (failing to) wait patiently for news from LBJ and Harris, since I've already heard back from the social work programs at those universities. I haven't received any news from Michigan on either application, so that would be nice too. March 1 through 12 should be a busy time for my email inbox.

Congrats!!! Now we're both waiting on LBJ! Fingers crossed. And yeah, that Social Work letter confused me too

Holy hell... so I get home from work, check my mailbox and see a letter from UT-Austin SSW! I open the letter with haste... and it's a generic letter confirming that they received my completed application, decisions go out 6-8 weeks after the deadline, yada yada. I'm sitting here wondering why they'd use snail mail to confirm something 1. I've known since January 15 and 2. I can check online. So for the hell of it, I decide to check my application status again--it's been what, 4 days since I last checked?
And I see the words "Congratulations!" and "Admitted" in bold... I'm so confused. My demeanor just did a 180 completely and now I can't stop squealing!

I am still waiting to hear back, but really, really hope I get in. I don't know anything about UT, but do love living in a coastal state. NC will give you the beach and mountains, and RDU is close for travel. I'm originally from Southern California but have really come to enjoy living here. I'll keep my fingers crossed for being classmates.
Oh! I will say that people generally start looking for housing around this time, so if you can look at a few places or check out some neighborhoods while you're hear that may be good. Craigslist is kind of overwhelming, but chapelhillrent.com is a bit more user-friendly. Millsrentals.com has some good stuff, too!

Hey @kayaker7235 - congrats on being admitted to the SSW! I assume you might be in town to interview for the MPA program as well? I have an interview next Friday and am potentially interested in the dual degree program (though not sure if the cost of an additional year is worthwhile). Supposedly there will be some social events during the interview weekend; PM me if you want to try to meet up. I've studied, worked, lived in Chapel Hill/Durham for the past 9 years.

Hi all -- current UNC Social Work student here. Happy to try and answer any questions you might have regarding the SSW. Feel free to PM me as well. Good luck with your applications -- and congratulations to those already accepted. UNC is a great program!
