I guess the 6 number isn't what bothers me, as that's probably not far off from the other programs I've applied to. But 200 applicants in one subfield was unexpected for me. My UNC letter claims they received around that much total.

Yes, I suppose so. Only admitting 6 from that subfield is just really brutal. I applied there with a comparative focus and so reacted quickly and negatively to that unwelcome news haha.

Someone posted that over 200 applied for Columbia with a comparative politics interest. I have a hard time believing that. Seems to me that most all the programs I've applied to claim to have received about 200 applications TOTAL. Am I wrong on this? Plus, only accepting 6 of the comparative folk seems unlikely as well, since they have to take into account accepted students declining for other offers.

I was rejected from UCSD, but I received several very welcoming emails like this from professors at another program. It makes you feel like they are excited about the prospect of you joining them! In my case, the program is the lower ranked of two that I'm deciding between. I haven't experienced that at the higher ranked program, which is one of the reasons I'm still considering both of them. I want to be in a program with professors who are enthusiastic about me working with them.

Congrats! I'm still waiting to hear from a few programs, but UNC is the plan at the moment. Did the email let you know anything about admitted students weekend? My letter mentioned it, but there were absolutely no details.

Congrats! I haven't heard anything, and while I thankfully have a UNC acceptance that I'm ecstatic about, a UCLA rejection will sting.

Does anyone know if we should be hearing from UCLA soon? I don't believe I've noticed anything on the results page, yet, but it seems they informed candidates around this time last year.

One of the profs on the adcom emailed me recently with that info and to set up an interview early next week. So I'm actually not sure how many of the 40 have already been contacted. Fingers crossed that they're still reaching out to applicants!

Yes, they are. I was told they narrowed it down to around 40 candidates to interview. Then they'll cut it down to the final 20 or so to admit.
