  1. ACCEPTED for Oman 2016-2017!!!!!!! CLOUD NINE
  2. @Abby08 Very cool! I didn't apply for the Fellowship since I'm not in grad school nor had I been applying to grad school -- that might be later down the road for me at this point. So I was only eligible for the Scholarship
  3. We are so. close. @Abby08 Good to see another on the Arabic squad. Where are you planning on studying? Qasid, perhaps?
  4. Didn't receive a second budget update hope that doesn't spell doom, even if Mr. Michael says it doesn't. Don't think I've ever wanted anything more.
  5. Going absolutely bats. Looking at the dates on our doc...it very well could be this week or next!
  6. @MoroccanMadam Oh wonderful! I've visited Al Akhawayn and enjoyed being in Ifrane. I spent my immersion in Meknès, local to Fès (where I had some killer coucous djaj, I'll tell you where that [tiny!] restaurant is!) and immensely historic -- definitely off the map as far as tourists but it's a gem! I could definitely still wind my way through the souqs in Meknès to get to my school in my sleep, ahhhh I want to go back so badly! But yes, send me a message, I've trekked all over and would love to talk to you about it! Days are counting down! We're roughly twenty days away from the "hear back" period, get excited! As part of our grade for my Arabic course, we have to lecture the class for one full course time during the semester -- I lectured yesterday on (WHAT ELSE) Oman and one of my classmates asked me, "You know so much about Oman, did you study there?" No, but HOPEFULLY!! I'm taking it as a sign. I'm taking pretty much anything as a sign.
  7. @johndoe1234 I don't think there's such a clause? As long as you have the money/housing for it, I don't think they can really penalize you for scheduling a flight that way? I'm not sure, though it could be a thing where it wouldn't be good to use Boren funds to fund auxiliary travel?
  8. @MoroccanMadam You've chosen an incredible country!! I've spent a combined 3.5 months there and would love to talk to you about it, especially if you end up getting the scholarship (or even if you don't)! If you do I would toooootally love to chat with you about dialect/where to go/etc., I have a huge passion for Morocco. Where are you planning on studying, I'm guessing Rabat? Marrakech? Wow, how exciting, I'm so jealous; I love Morocco! Good to know that your advisor is on the inside! Could it be possible that the email only says that everyone got it? I wonder, it seems like we are 100/100% on budget emails on this forum, so I'm unsure. Either it's not true for this year or we have a really fantastic group of applicants! And I know; I would say that I access the Google docs and this forum probably daily. I'm so antsy; I'm thinking about it every single day. I'm sure that you've got an amazing shot, especially with your advisor's help!
  9. @mikjy I didn't! What was it about?
  10. @johndoe1234 @aohl0628 Very exciting! Are your years starting in September?
  11. @aohl0628 How cool! Here's hoping Boren makes all your dreams come true. Are you applying for a year? I'm planning on doing a 30h/week language intensive in Muscat with the possibility of taking on an internship or other kind of work in the second semester (I applied for a year). I want to work in interpretation/translation with the CIA and/or other D.C. alphabet organizations as a career, so Boren seemed right up my alley! My thesis is on Oman's role as an intermediary between the U.S. and Iran (specifically re: nuclear deal) so I'd love to look into potentially working in the embassy in Muscat while I'm there (if I'm there, ahh!) @kbui Lucky you for going in an earlier year! How would you describe your experience with Boren? I'd love to hear
  12. No problem you guys! ( @johndoe1234 @aohl0628 ) What are your Scholarship plans?
  13. Budget request to all Boren Scholarship applicants received Wednesday, March 9, 2016 at 1:54pm. Redacted text below: Hello from the Boren Awards. We are emailing all 2016 Boren Scholarship applicants [with the exception of AFLI French/Swahili/Portuguese, SAFLI and Language Flagship] to see if you have any changes to your scholarship budget. We understand that costs might have changed a little since you submitted your application, and now we are giving everyone the chance to make edits to the budget and the budget alone. All applications are still being reviewed at this time and no decisions have been made yet. Maybe Boren...caught on to the fact that their budget emails were telling re: acceptances and have abandoned the select budget emailing practice? I hope not but it would make sense, I guess. Too bad, the peace of mind would have been great.
  14. @reekeecim I definitely went a little overboard with the digging for information on past years...what can I say, it's the dream. What would you like to be doing in Azerbaijan? We've hit March, the fabled month of budget emails. Fingers crossed, losing my mind already. Have been seeing plenty of Oman omens (please forgive me for that terrible joke) so I'm hopeful!
  15. @readysetgo I've been to Morocco twice and did CLS there this past summer! Have you ever been? That's so exciting! What are your research interests? Fingers crossed for you, I love Morocco with every inch of my heart
  16. @readysetgo My heart totally jumped! Tell me about you, are you a scholarship or fellowship? Where? Definitely so jumpy
  17. Hi guys! Past years have put together spreadsheets to track notifications and organize information for the benefit of future years -- for reference, here are the spreadsheets for the 2011-2012 Boren and for the 2015-2016 Boren. As other forum participants have noticed in the past, it looks like there's a near-perfect correlation between the (mid-March, in the 2015-2016 cycle) "budget proposal update email" and an April acceptance, so let's keep careful track of that! I've started a new document for the 2016-2017 Boren cycle -- please add your information and best of luck to everyone! I can hardly wait to know! P.S, I would love to hear about your proposals/life dreams, let's get a discussion going! I'm the only Boren Scholarship applicant I know of around me, so I'd love to talk to you guys about it!
  18. @mrs12 Good to see you on here! @johndoe1234 I feel pretty confident; my school is really strict about its Boren applicants and we go through four rounds of campus deadlines and interviews on campus before we ever submit, so I guess I could say I'm as ready as I'll ever be! My scholarship advisor seems very confident that I've got a good shot, so I hope that's true. The problem is that I'm already daydreaming about being in Oman...it's a sickness!
  19. @mrs12 CLS is really good about keeping in touch with its alumni and in general the alumni base on social media and LinkedIn is booming and very responsive. One of the best things about being in the program with regard to networking would be the pre-departure orientation in D.C. -- CLS brought in top level officers from different alphabet orgs, think tanks, and NGOs to talk about career opportunities for those with language skills, which was amazing! The setting was, helpfully, quite intimate as these individuals presented informally to about 40 or so of us from the Ibri, Oman and Meknes, Morocco groups and we were able to ask questions and talk to them afterward. So I would say it's definitely a true assessment, just make sure to go up and talk to the representatives visiting the CLS crews after their presentations before you get another helping of Indian food (the orientation was spectacularly catered, like...it was amazing hahaha)
  20. @sofisramirez8 Hey there! Last year's second round notification went out on January 13th and final acceptances were sent out on February 26th; we didn't have any delays with the application system or major snowstorms, though! Given the initial delays, I doubt that mid-February acceptance notifications will be the order of the day -- still, I don't imagine that CLS would prolong the acceptance date too much, given the earlier delays, the fact that it's a summer program, and the fact that CLS gives you a full three weeks to decide whether you'll be accepting or declining your award. I'd be happy to send you what I wrote! Just send me a PM
  21. @pdh12 If I remember correctly, your odds go up to around 50/50 if you cleared the first round. As far as factors for my acceptance, I think the cleanest part of my application was my personal statement; I made sure to link a personal narrative with my passion for and desire to study Arabic in the short and long term. This is classic essay advice for this kind of application, but it goes a long way! Best of luck to you all
  22. Hello to all! I'm an alumna of CLS Arabic 2015 (Meknès, Morocco) and would love to answer any questions you all have about the application/notification process or about the program in general. I loved my experiences in Morocco and am a huge fan and supporter of the CLS mission and its values. Don't be shy! In response to above comments, would totally be willing to send along my successful application essays/materials. If anyone else is biting their nails over their Boren Scholarship application, I'd love to talk to you too! I just submitted my application for a year in Muscat. Fingers crossed!
  23. Hi all! I'm a CLS Arabic 2015 aluma; will be a May 2016 grad of William & Mary, double major in IR and Middle Eastern Studies, concentrating in Arabic. I applied for a Scholarship to study Arabic in Muscat, Oman (hence my display name!) for a year. Here's hoping!
