  1. Hi potentially silly question but I am a new TA and am just wondering how it works for texts our students are using. Do we go buy them ourselves or does the department provide them?
  2. Thanks for the reassurance fuzzylogician!
  3. Hi All, Quick question and wasn't sure who to ask. I'm beginning grad school in September. I'm currently applying for a volunteer position to organize a large conference for my department. I have a lot of previous event planning experience (2 years full-time coordinating work for student services in a university) so I think I have a good shot at this and it would be a good networking opportunity. My MA is fully funded (both tuition and living) so I won't be working and should have time to do this. HOWEVER, I'm a bit stuck with what to put on my CV. I won't actually be starting my program until September, however, obviously I want to indicate that I will be attending this institution in the Fall, as the position is only open to students from my future university. Should I just list ... Master's of XX, XX School, September 2016 - present....? Does the same apply for scholarships I have been selected for, but won't actually receive until September? Sorry if this is silly. Thank you!
  4. From my understanding our applications are ranked at a departmental level. HOWEVER, this ranking is just a suggestion. The SGS then "re-scores" and "re-ranks" all the applicants from all departments. Depending on the school the SGS may or may not inform the department how their applicants ranked on the school-wide level (I know this because Toronto told me I had ranked highly at the departmental level and the SGS told them I had also been well ranked in the school-wide competition. However, at Carleton the department told me they had no information regarding how I ranked school-wide). From what I understand there are no quotas per department, applicants are given an individual score and then ranked based on the score. So if a PoliSci person is offered and declines, the next person on this list is offered, regardless of what department they are in. Hope this makes sense...
  5. Offered SSHRC at Carleton and UofT, Concordia still at "Received by Administrator" I have accepted my SSHRC at Carleton so hopefully an alternate and UofT will be happy!
  6. I did!
  7. So just some interesting info while we sit and fret http://www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca/results-resultats/stats-statistiques/index-eng.aspx
  8. How are people already hearing back about CGS already, I thought we all had to wait until April 1st!?! I received the same email as LebaneseKafta...
  9. I know right...I'm so excited!!
  10. Hey, there are a bunch of threads about whether or not to email departments asking for updates. I needed to hear about Toronto because Concordia wanted me to make a decision by this Friday because if I don't take the spot they can offer my funding to another student. I emailed Toronto asking for an update, and when I heard nothing for 4 days I assumed I was rejected. Then, yesterday, I got a short email from the grad assistant saying the department had recommended me for admission and I should get an official offer from the grad director by the end of next week. Then Concordia emailed me telling me they were giving me an extension and I didn't need to decide until the first week of April, which is lovely as I'm waiting of SSHRC anyways. Honestly, I don't think there is any harm in emailing, but it doesn't necessarily mean you're going to hear anything sooner. Toronto told me they were swamped in applications and were hoping to have the admissions cycle wrapped up by March 25th (which is late for them). However, that's just my department, yours is probably different. Cheers!
  11. Hey...so have you heard anything. Silence on this front :-(
  12. Stephkd - thanks for the reply. I'm glad I'm not the only one in this situation. Hopefully we'll both hear soon. I broke down and emailed the department yesterday (not sure if I should have done that or not but I couldn't help myself) and didn't get a reply.
  13. Hi All, If a topic for this has already been started please forgive (and redirect) me! Are there any Canadians out there who want to stress / commiserate about the fact we won't know about funding through the CGS Master's until April 1st. I'm not a current grad student and applied for CGS (SSHRC) funding for three schools- 2 of which I have already been admitted two, the other I should hear from either today or early next week. It's a significant factor in my decision and the waiting process is killing me . . .
  14. I emailed the grad admissions office and got this lovely automated reply "Your message has been received and filed for future reading. Due to the high volume of messages received at this address, it may take a few days for a reply." I didn't want to bug the department assistant but I think I might...
  15. Hi all, Wondering if anyone else is in this situation... I applied to University of Toronto's History MA and my status on the website has been updated to "decision made" and apparently we will get further information via snail mail?! It's been 4 days and nothing in my mailbox yet. I haven't seen any rejections or acceptances pop up on the board for the masters program in history at UofT but things are typically quieter for Canadian schools on gradcafe. This is the last place I'm waiting to hear from so I'm a bit impatient. Thanks!
