  1. Yeah, with some of the schools (especially the NYC schools now) I'm just like why did I apply there. NYU especially (I'm learning more and more about how little funding they actually have after being waitlisted and seeing the large number of people who've received poorly funded offers). I wish I hadn't wasted the money. If I get rejected from Columbia (or accepted without funding), fine. At least I know they have 10 funded spots. That said, that guy in the posts above is making me super skeptical of Columbia at the moment. Heh. But it's a huge program so I'm sure there are great people too. But, jeez, what an asshole.
  2. No, not really. I think the majority of them lean toward the traditional. And many of the experimental schools will take traditional students if they're writing something they find interesting from what I gather. I just know the above schools based on faculty / graduates.
  3. On the whole, there are more places that do "James Wood" / "Charles Baxter" (check out the craft books by these people) type of fiction than there are places like Alabama / Brown / WashU. For sure. But if you do write stuff that is more experimental, maybe send samples of that stuff to the programs that lean that way?
  4. That sucks. I don't know the full details but it might have come from a desire to have you relocate for your MFA program (?)--especially if you're willing to (not all people can). I think a lot of programs think this is for the best when it comes to local applicants because it "pushes" people more than going to a program locally. This happened to me when I applied to MA programs--they didn't reject me, but my advisor outright said I should go somewhere else. It looks better on a resume, etc. Many programs at high ranked schools outright won't accept people from the same school for graduate study there (especially not right out of undergrad unless it is one of those BA/MA programs). But, yeah, don't sweat it too much. Sounds like you got a ton of offers and you have a place to go! So yay!
  5. You should read things like Cheryl Strayed's Wild, Into The Wild, etc. and then do questionable things in the woods and then write a nonfiction thing about it >.O Also, honestly, that sounds super fun--you'll have plenty of writing time. Make sure you invest in some good winter clothes.
  6. I've seen that article before. That guy / his article suck. His ego is hurt because his MFA program is no longer rated #2.
  7. Don't go to Columbia. Not worth the debt. Period. I think @DangerDetective is right about visiting campus--see how it is. Also, see if there are groups on campus you can join. Honestly, you're just as likely to have an asshole bro in your workshop at Columbia. They're everywhere. I guarantee they're are some at Columbia by default because the program is so big and has such a high acceptance rate. UNC-W is a decent sized campus--there's likely to be awesome student groups, etc. And I'm sure most of your cohort will be cool people. Even if they aren't up on disability studies / politics, I'm going to assume that most of them will adapt quickly and be cool people about it if you point it out to them. There will, without doubt, be some safer spaces on campus, but there's no guarantee the workshop will be that space. Anywhere. That's just the shitty reality of things. That three years to work on writing / building a manuscript is awesome though. I wouldn't treat it lightly.
  8. I wish these last couple schools would finish. It's kind of ridiculous how long some places are taking.
  9. No. But I will eat vegan things if they are good. Heh.
  10. Me either! At least they have new dairy free varieties to try (that I bet are good since I think they're made with almond milk or something tasty like that)!
  11. HUGE CONGRATS!
  12. There's no reason why you couldn't send a nice email asking your status (and mention the other email).
  13. Very much could be a positive sign. Fingers crossed for you!
  14. Yeah, they must not give out very many of those as none of them are posted on the results page. What's worse: they don't have any teaching assistantships. They only pay 5k per class (like you're an adjunct) and don't cover tuition. Seems like the program is mostly geared toward making a profit at the expense of students.
  15. They don't order the waitlist. However, I sent an email and they said I probably should take one of my other offers because getting full funding was "highly unlikely." Makes sense given that they only have a few fully funded spots--in fact, some of the teaching positions seem to be half tuition and a small stipend. Which isn't great considering how expensive tuition is. I'm just going to take my name off the list.
  16. Ah, there we go, I made the NYU waitlist. Not too hopeful about my chances of getting funding.
  17. I had one re:used rec (from pre applying to my current masters). Just ask. Also, maybe have them re-upload them to interfolio? (If they wrote them fast they might take another look... ). Also, some of the programs only accept rec letters via their online systems, so they're likely going to have to upload a few themselves. If you feel shame about not getting in: don't. These programs are harder to get into than Harvard Law. Give it another shot. Work on your application. Apply to more schools. It will work out. Also, what's up with NYU? Why haven't I been rejected yet (or heard anything yet)? Bah. Also, hurry up Columbia.
  18. Yeah, I feel this way also--like, there is always some small chance that X school will give me a better offer in a better location.
  19. There was an acceptance on the Feb. 23rd, and then another one on March 8th. Usually substantially more acceptances than that are posted on the boards, so I suspect more news is coming.
  20. Come on last couple of programs! Accept / reject me already--I want to feel done with this.
  21. Have all of your places made it on the board? Don't assume you have rejections until you have them--lots of people on the forum (myself included) have gotten rejected from a bunch of places and then got that one admission. That's all it takes.
  22. I sent an email because there was an issue with my application. They actually just emailed emailed me my letter (and it came in the mail on the same day too coincidentally). If you send a nice email, I'm sure they'll oblige.
  23. I haven't read that one, but I liked Americanah quite a bit! I'll have to read it! She's great! I'm actually teaching her short, short book "We Should All Be Feminists" in a composition course I'm currently teaching. <3 Anyway, I should probably do a list too. I kind of love both genres (and nonfiction too... but I won't make a list for that) Here's my list for Fiction: Colson Whitehead Zone One Chang Rae Lee On Such A Full Sea Lidia Yuknavitch Dora: A Headcase Toni Morrison Home (obviously this was good [it's Morrison!], lol, but it ranks among good books I've read recently) & Poetry: Claudia Rankine Citizen Bhanu Kapil Ban en Banlieue Cathy Park Hong Dance Dance Revolution
  24. For the sake of welcome distraction: what are some of the best (top 5) contemporary poetry/fiction books you've read recently? I'd love to hear what people are reading!
  25. A million? Heh! Wait, are you actually applying to business school? >.O
