Yeah, I agree with you, particularly since it was an op-ed in the LA times. I agree with (and am happy to have read such a good articulation of) everything they've said. I just wish it came a cross more strongly that this acceptance of poorer philosophical form from archetypal philosophers is something that has been hidden from view (in virtue of the command that these individuals have of the cultural apparatus of smartness,or however they put it). I know some misogynistic philosophers who have admirable clarity of thought and argument form. But they don't read feminist literature, and they don't have women's experiences, and so they manage to come to false conclusions despite reliable rational faculties. I think the sort of thinking demonstrated in this article represents a jump forward in philosophical objectivity, where the aesthetic, cultural, and other variables of the thinkers themselves are being brought into the foreground for critical evaluation. I just think this article (if read by someone outside of the profession who isn't familiar with the history of philosophy) doesn't give the problems its addressing enough context within the history of philosophy, and it does this in a way that makes philosophy sound like sophistry.

My god, first Charles Mills, and now Miranda Fricker is moving to join Alcoff at CUNY, too? I didn't apply because I heard their funding sucks... Kicking my feminist self now. Dream team assembled.

Congrats on those York acceptances! I'm familiar with the department and am happy to talk about it with anyone who wants to PM me.

Do be careful with journal submissions as well. You'll get different advice if you ask different people, so be aware that not everyone looks at every journal publication as a positive. To some, publications at unknown and not-prestigious journals makes it look as though you've set your sights very low and aren't fancy school material.

It was a friend from my MA program.

I just declined an offer from UBC (accepted off the waitlist). Good luck waitlisters!
-
Are you talking about the University of British Columbia? I was just accepted off of the waitlist, so I assume acceptances did go out, since someone must have turned an offer down for me to be accepted.

I would say, but I'm worried that the story about the two male students would make it too easy for someone to figure out who exactly I am, and since I'm likely going to that school anyway, that could make things awkward. And God forbid those men would have to feel awkward.

Not Duquesne, and it is a program with a good proportion of female students with at least one stellar feminist scholar and a department head who is enthusiastic about, though not explicitly working on, feminist ideas. Those are calming points to focus on, thanks for pointing them out. This is my only full-blown acceptance so far.

I was just at a campus visit at one of my top choice schools and I feel a bit sick to my stomach. It seems like a great program and a great fit for me, the issue is the other graduate students. It happened multiple times as one or another of the current students said goodbye to our group of prospectives that they shook all of the men's hands but not mine. Then at dinner, there was a point where I was caught in a conversation between two male current students. They were acting as though I wasn't there and talking through me, and then one of them actually suggested that I leave. Like, take my plate and find a different spot? That's not what you do when you realise that you're excluding someone. I feel gross.

Thanks! I would suggest feeling either uninterested or hopeful. It didn't seem like an automated message, so these will probably go out over the course of a few days, and it seems to have gone out before full-blown acceptances.

That was me!

My dentist just called to remind me to book my annual visit. Now I want to switch dentists. MIT is my very unrealistic dream school.

I got a bunch of hits from a city that a conference I applied to is in just before they told me that my paper was accepted. If they really like your writing sample, I'm sure some people are curious to put a face to the name after the admissions process and so they google you. Probably most don't take the time to do that. And sometimes its random people scanning the site. I'm strangely popular in Korea. I'd try not to get my hopes up based on an academia hit, but it was enough to make me change my instagram account back to private anyways.

(Premise:I know this is not as torturous as having not heard back at all, but) I'm only in at one school and I'm now starting to feel like I somehow conned them into letting me in. I hope I don't see any buyer's remorse in their eyes when I visit campus.

Congratulations! Was this a personalized emailed that maybe Jennifer Nagel is just taking some extra time on mine for, or something automated?

SO many crickets. I had a strange amount of faith in the MIT prediction for some reason. It's important to remember in this trying time that all committee work is slow and sucks (for everyone involved). I don't think anything resembling reasonable processes should be expected. C'est la vie. Glad all I have to do right now is sit around and wait for responses instead of sit on a committee and try to come to a consensus on what those responses should be.

Thanks for starting this thread. I'm going to try to get the most out of my visits, and I'm almost certain that I'll leave them kicking myself for not having asked questions that I think up later. That's why I think one objective to add to campus visit weekends is to trade contact info with at least a couple of current, upper-year graduate students who can field those questions later. So far, schools have been really proactive about putting me in contact with students with whom I have things in common. If the school doesn't do that for you, do it for yourself during the visit.

If we're going in a linearly causal direction with this, I'm going to go ahead and say the reason even more women don't go into PhD programs is admissions committees that categorically don't accept them. I'd avoid a department like that, too. I'm having difficulty seeing how you think that the choice to go to a program with female students is antifeminist. Wouldn't a brain-drain in sexist schools further the feminist goal of promoting a more inclusive academia?

Nice, that's the paper that the blog post I linked to is about.

The data are definitely sparse and easy to cherry-pick. I've been following Kate Norlock's attempts to gather sufficient data for a while, and Eric Schwitzgebel has recently taken up the task, too. Here's what Schwitzgebel says so far: http://schwitzsplinters.blogspot.ca/2016/01/percentages-of-us-doctorates-in.html

I made an account just to draw attention to the NYU claims, too. And Toronto. I'm going to need to hear both of these from a real, anonymous grad cafe account holder. Note: Each of the three welcome emails grad cafe sends when you sign up gave me separate mini heart attacks. They should know their jumpy audience better than to do that.
