NYU is a great program but so are many OTHER programs, programs that clearly had their sh*t together weeks ago (excuse my French). I also decided several days ago that regardless of whether or not I got an offer from NYU (which it appears I won`t, but whatever) that I would not accept. SuperJan, W&M is a fantastic school-I just turned down my offer to work with Charlie McGovern, and it was definitely a painful moment, despite the fact that I`m super excited about the program I decided to accept (Brown AmCiv). Fortunately he was incredibly gracious about it and offered to stay in touch in the future. I`m sure you will be very happy at W&M!! Oh and the subject of NYU and money--I thought it was interesting that this protest happened there: http://www.artandeducation.net/news/demonstrating-what-659-million-in-nyu-student-debt-looks-like/ I know that the issue of student debt is by no means unique to NYU, but I have to imagine that the cost of life in NY doesn`t make the situation any easier...

Saluki88- if you're talking about UNC Comm Studies, I received a direct email from the grad coordinator a couple of weeks ago informing me that I had been wait listed. Apparently they're having problems with their electronic notification system, which doesn't surprise me given the technical difficulties I encountered with the online app. I'm assuming that all those that have been accepted/wait listed have been similarly notified... just wanted to let you know
-
That seems really odd to me. I don't understand--what happens if you can't go? Weird. Obviously they're not asking me, since I'm in Turkey and I'm definitely not coming back to the States for an unfunded "see if you fit" visit.
-
Just saw the post on the results board about NYU still reviewing applications and not sending out notifications for 2 more weeks. Oi vey!!!! Torture!!!!
-
Congrats on Yale! Fantastic news. I'm so happy for you. I'm also wondering about campus visits to Brown... Though it's definitely not so relevant for you now!!
-
Also accepted at Brown. Outofredink, I think we got the same offer. Out of curiosity, what's your top choice? Also, anyone want to guess when we'll hear from NYU? That's the last program I'm waiting to hear from... And it's killing me!!
-
email directly to me from Vilma. Keeping my fingers crossed that you get an email!!

Just got an email from the grad coordinator for UNC Comm Studies informing me I've been waitlisted. Apparently they're having problems with the online system, getting notification of admit status to students, but I assume they're contacting anyone else that's admitted or wait listed directly. That's all the news from here! Maximalist--sorry about Brown's MCM. That's a tough program. I applied to the American Civilization program with intention of working with MCM as well--still no word from Am Civ, but my hopes aren't very high.

yeah, I thought I was going to make it to 10!! I know a girl who applied to 12 schools a couple of years ago. I can't imagine. The other one that didn't make it was UMich... I'm from the South, and the prospect of an Ann Arbor winter was too much for me to bear, no matter how good a fit the department was. I just could not bring myself to do it.
-
Nope, no news here. I'll let you know if I hear anything!
-
Definitely not worthless, UIUC is a GREAT program, fantastic history--I was totally planning on applying myself but after 8 other applications, I just couldn't bring myself to put together the 9th for the Jan 15th deadline. Really excellent program though. Congrats to you!
-
I'd give them a call or email. I'm pretty sure they called all the accepted applicants (and a few weeks ago at that), but not sure if/how they waitlist.
-
Woah, just got accepted by William and Mary. Four years of funding! After getting rejected from every school applied to last year, I never dreamed I'd be looking at three acceptances plus a wait list. At the moment my gut is with Stony Brook--I just feel like the program is a better fit for me overall--but getting another acceptance does give one the warm and fuzzies
-
excellent recon sir/madam!! In light of this information I retract the above pessimistic statement. Though I just got accepted to SUNY Stony Brook's Cultural Studies program, so UNC is now less crucial for me. I mean I'm still really excited about the program, but I'm not sure if it's as good a fit as SBU. Though UNC may more generous with funding... So we shall see. Strangefox--sorry to hear of your rejection from Penn, but glad to hear you're upbeat about it! I felt similar about USC's AmStudies program (which I was rejected from).

Hey, no problem. That's what we're all here for, right? I suppose the post on the results board could be fake, but they definitely notified by postal service last year. Though that was for all notifications--acceptances, waitlist, and rejections. But I know some schools are still using postal service for acceptances and email for the mass rejection.
-
Ouch. Just got a response to my email to the grad coordinator in the Comm Studies department at UNC. "Once the decisions are finalized, you should be getting an email from the Graduate School. It shouldn't take much longer. Thank you for your patience." Since the acceptance that was posted was received via the postal service, I'm guessing this will be my second rejection. Since so many of us on the board applied to UNC, I'm a little surprised that none of the other acceptances have shown up in anyone's mailbox yet...Who the heck are they accepting???
-
I hate to be the voice of doom and gloom, but given the date of the second USC post, and the fact that both acceptances were by phone, I'm guessing the best I personally can hope for at this point is waitlist. Ah well, as great a fit as I felt I had with several faculty members, this was probably one of the worst departmental fits for me. And considering how competitive the program is, I shouldn't be surprised....
-
Hey Kathiza, I'm also a Fulbrighter (in Turkey). I don't know if whichever country you're in has better postal service than Turkey, but Turkey's is really terrible. So I emailed Vilma and asked if I could get my decision via email or phone whenever it's available. While to a certain extent I just want to know NOW, I'm also legitimately concerned that if I have to wait for the decision to reach me via mail, I could potentially not receive it for three or four weeks--or at all. (I don't know, maybe it's because I'm living in the hinterland, but things just disappear in this postal system. Like my supplemental materials to William and Mary that I had to send twice....) So if that's a concern for you, try sending a similar email. Who knows if it will be effective, but it can't hurt to ask!
-
I saw the admit via postal service post on the results list. To whomever it is that posted it: when you check your application status online now through the My UNC website, has your application status changed? Also, it's not clear which Communication department at UNC it was, whether Communication Studies, Mass Comm, or another, could you please specify?
-
A similar thing seems to have happened with the American Studies program--they accepted one person, like 2 weeks ago (or one person who posted on the results page). Several people doubted it, but others said that they thought it could be legit because apparently USC (or the ASE program at least) has a history of notifiying somewhat sporadically. Not sure if same applies to Annenberg, but it seems like it could be the case. But a fellowship nomination is not an admissions offer... Maybe they do those first?? I would say that USC folks shouldn't lose hope yet!
-
yeah I felt the same way about my first admit (to KU, American Studies). Regardless of how excited I am to live in Lawrence (not very) it's pretty fantastic to know I'll be enrolled and studying what I love next year. It's a perfectly decent program and a good fit for my interests. As for Temple, great school and Philly's a great city! Congrats to you!
-
I saw that the acceptance to USC was received almost two weeks ago--I'm guessing this does not bode well for those us still waiting to hear. I don't mean to be a pessimist, but I'm preparing myself for a rejection email some time in the next few days.
-
I guess I'd say that USC, UCSD, and NYU are highest on my list, simply because they combine "goodness of fit" with the program and individual faculty with a good geographical location the best--there are definitely specific archives that I'm looking to work with, as well as cultural institutions (my professional background is in museums/non-profit arts). But I'm actually really excited about all the programs I applied to, so I'd be totally happy with any of the others as well. Great programs and great faculty at all schools. But yeah, I agree with not considering it "the real deal" until we know about funding, that's definitely super important for me! I hope you're right about hearing this week... I need to email KU to have them correct my mailing address in their files anyway, so I was thinking of nicely asking when we might hear...
-
Me too!! Congrats to both of us. What do you know about the funding situation at KU? I've heard it's not great-what do you think we can expect?
-
I'm mildly curious-does anyone have an opinion on whether they think UNC will notify via postal service, as they have apparently done in years past? Given that they just revamped their online application system, I feel like they'll probably do email notification--and does anyone do postal service notification anymore anyway?
