  1. You should checkout NC State for their graduate electrical engineering programs. They have many diverse tracks some of which are related to electric cars. Is there some other reason you would want to come to America as an international student? I have lived in the states my whole life.
  2. I am excited too. If you truly believe it is anything like Charlottesville VA then I would be thrilled to attend for my graduate studies and work. I am waiting to hear back from UVA. I love the downtown area with their tea bazar, and music. I hope Gainesville will be cheaper, but C-ville isn't that costly. If anyone has any insight into the college of engineering there and other graduate exclusive housing I am all ears.
  3. USCB is a like living in a beach front villa I hear, especially for the students. As far as the quality of education you're getting, current reports say it is within the top five. There is no shocker there considering the number of Nobel prize winning scientists there that research. What is your subfield if you do not mind me asking. I thought about going there for their physics program but I instead applied to MIT only to be later rejected. I am now solely looking into my options for mechanical and aerospace engineering for a PhD.
  4. I have become more and more a person who tries to understand the universe from an interaction point of view. When I was in high school I took a nuclear engineering and robotics class that really expanded my mind. I saw first hand what engineers do, and the skills that I would need to become a robotics engineer. At that time, the thought of a PhD never came into focus. Nevertheless, I went off to college where I studied physics and astronomy. I was really amazed at the elegance of physical equations and their descriptions of physical phenomena. I graduate from a liberal arts college this may 2016'. I have developed and refined many of my passions, but now my desire for building robots will be enhanced by my knowledge of physics, programming, and calculus. I will more than 90 percent likely be attending the UF for my PhD in mechanical and aerospace engineering. What is doing the convincing now is that all of the indicators in my life our pointing in this direction. It's like a funnel that is taking me along this path, and of course I can escape the funnel if I thought that was necessary. I have chosen to take this ride, and I believe this is how I CAN do something meaningful with my set of skills and something I'm passionate about.
  5. Have any of you gradcafe users had any exposure to the college of engineering? Is there a gated community of engineering students? Do they mix well with the other population of students or do they stick out easily? But seriously, I am wondering where I should live as a first year PhD student in Mechanical and Aerospace engineering. I am a single male, 21 years old currently. I am from Virginia. For a picture of my personality: I love proof writing in math, philosophy, understanding biblical scripture, and more or less cross fit. In this light, I would have been well suited in ancient Greece, but I love modern notions of fitness and mental well being. Has anybody else migrated very far to Gainsville and what were the adjustments you sustained?
  6. Hello all gradcafe aficionados. I am nearly done with my liberal arts education as a physics major and astronomy minor. I am waiting to hear from UVA for mechanical engineering PhD program and NC State for a PhD in Electrical engineering. I have already been accepted into an engineering school in Florida. What course work is common for first year PhD engineering candidates? Also, is it normal to start research in the first year? On another note what else are you responsible for as a PhD mechanical and aerospace engineering student? Other than coursework and research projects, what else will I be doing in the sphere of the university? Please give me all of the wisdom from you much more sophisticated coffees!
