  1. Just to get some additional info out there, I wanted to let you know that I was the one who posted the first acceptance. I got an email alert that a new application status was available online on Wednesday. I didn't actually check the website because they sent me an additional acceptance email immediately after. I also received a letter in the mail on Friday. I'm sure more decisions will be going out soon -- good luck to everyone waiting!
  2. I also feel incredibly fortunate. These last 24 hours have been wonderful. Big congrats to you on all your good news. It's amazing to even have a choice of such top programs. Wow. My partner spent a summer in Austin and says it's amazing. She also applied there (not for soc) and still raves about the recruitment weekend. Perhaps we'll meet at Northwestern's admit weekend? Fingers crossed for you!
  3. Ah, so I gathered -- I like your femifist! I am trying to stay open-minded here. I found out about Michigan and Berkeley on the same day (amazing!)... I currently work at Michigan and my partner is a graduate student here. There's a lot to weigh. But I'm definitely going to the admit weekend. I get conflicting advice on whether it's a good idea to get your PhD from the same institution as college. But I think Michigan might be the best fit for me nonetheless. That said, I'm sitting here watching 5 inches of snow pile onto our existing 8 and Berkeley is looking nicer and nicer... What about you? What are your top choices?
  4. Thanks a lot, I'm thrilled. Congrats on your admits! Broadly: gender and sexuality. I applied to work with Barrie Thorne, Kristin Luker, Ann Swidler, and Jennifer Johnson-Hanks.
  5. I went to Michigan for undergrad, had three majors (4.0 in sociology, 3.9 overall), my honors thesis won 3 writing awards, I have 3 conference presentations (1 solo-authored) but no publications, lots of research experience, and really crappy GRE scores (I did get a 5.5 on the writing, but my verbal/quant was not good at all).
  6. No, and I was so excited that I forgot to ask! They did say it's lined up to correspond with their graduate student conference (March 11th).
  7. Yes, the second phone acceptance post was mine -- I got a call late yesterday evening from the chair of admissions telling me I was admitted and to expect funding information via email in the next 2-3 weeks. Their visitation is March 10-14. I'm absolutely thrilled. So far there aren't any rejections up, so don't lose faith -- I'm sure more acceptances will be going out this week. Good luck!
  8. Would anyone like to trade statements? I have a draft of a Statement of Purpose for PhD programs in sociology. It's pretty rough and I would love some feedback. Thanks in advance!
  9. If you look at "announcements" on this page (http://socialscience...ive/admissions/), you'll see that the University of Chicago has an optional early deadline of November 15th (the "real" deadline is December 10th) for its Social Sciences Division. Yes, they waive the application fee for these early apps, but I'm sure they're not doing it to help us out. Do you think their committee is going to read a first round of apps prior to the "real" deadline? And, if so, do you think it could help to be a part of that first reading? On the one hand, you demonstrate how excited you are about their program to submit so early and you'll be part of a smaller pool of applicants; but on the other hand, they will be reading more carefully and might be more critical, and of course, there's the obvious benefit of having an extra month to polish everything if you aren't aiming for this early deadline. Please weigh in! What do you think? What would you do/are you doing? Thanks in advance!
