  1. Hi gumbikim, I visited UW last week and got to meet some of the current china studies students. They showed me what they are working on in language class. If you got an 8 on the HSK, I'd say you should probably be able to test into Chinese 4 with some reviewing over the summer. I study with the HSK advanced book and have some grammar difficulties, but I could read and understand the assignment the guy in Chinese 4 showed me. They will have placement exams when you go. Of course, brushing up over the summer will be helpful. As to your questions about how it is taught in US institutions, classes are usually taught in English at lower levels, which I personally think places the students at a disadvantage in terms of speaking. As you progress, classes are taught more in Mandarin. But, if I were you, and what I plan to do, is to work on my reading. Try reading books, scholarly articles, the newspaper and things like that in Chinese. Also, if you can't already read traditional characters, you might want to start working on that. But honestly, with you passing HSK 8, I think you'll be fine!
  2. I went to Rutgers as an undergrad ('05) and its not a so small! It's really diverse there, too, and in Jersey in general. There's definitely stuff to do in the area. Also, proximity to NY and Philly open up your social scene significantly. I also am currently living in Boston, one advantage you might have there is being able to use facilities or attend seminars at the schools in the area. Also the job market in Boston is more competitive because of the volume of well educated people. I would choose Rutgers.
  3. I did not get funding from either program.
  4. I was notified by email. It is not being sponsored by the Jackson school though. It is being sponsored by GO-MAP, a central office that works with minority and underrepresented students. If you look up GO-MAP there is more information on their website.
  5. My bad, I didn't realize that it is for underrepresented minority students, which may explain why you weren't contacted... Don't go cancelling your trip to Singapore but be sure to say hi to the sun for me
  6. Is anyone who got into the University of Washington and is considering it (or has accepted their offer) planning on attending the Prospective Student Days next week?
  7. Did you hear anything about funding from Washington? I decided to wait until April 1 to make my decision to do some more research on the two places I'm considering (Indiana and Washington), and I still haven't heard back from Hawaii. Funding is an issue for me.
  8. Yay! Congrats on the good news I was hoping you'd get some of that soon. And maybe you'll still get some from Michigan. Fighting!
  9. I just called and they said they would be sent out early next week by email...
  10. I was wondering the same thing...
  11. I am most likely going to decline Michigan. It was lower on my list. I sent my application materials on the deadline day for each school I applied to besides Hawaii. From what I understand of the admissions process (I work at a university and my boss is on the admissions committee), they collect materials and look at them all together for one program at a date a couple weeks out from when they are actually due. Maybe you haven't heard because, at least for Washington, they came in the mail and your letter has a lot farther to travel. I would call or email Michigan. Good luck and I hope you get some good news soon!
  12. I just heard from UWSTL. I got accepted to MA-Chinese Studies!!! Its my first choice
  13. I've heard back from Indiana and Michigan. Also, I called Washington and they said that they would be sending decisions out probably yesterday... Where did you apply?
  14. I know this isn't the city page but I live in Cambridge. I'd be happy to answers questions you may have with the area if you are not familiar with it already. Congratulations on your acceptance!
  15. I have been accepted to U Mich as well. I found out 2 Sunday's ago. We're both waiting on Washington it seems. I'm so anxious. Hope you get in to your first choice!
  16. I am not native Chinese or Chinese American. I do, however, speak Mandarin and am in the middle of my second semester of Japanese. I did apply to m.a. asian studies: China. I am interested in China's ethnic minorities. By the way, I saw that someone posted an acceptance to Indiana for the MA. I was accepted, too. Will you attend?
  17. I got one on a Sunday morning. I was also surprised. As to whether it is odd or not, I am not sure.
  18. I also applied to Michigan, Indiana, Washington, and Hawaii
  19. Hi, I'm new to this forum. I applied to 5 MA East Asian Studies programs with a focus on China. Does anyone know when/how Stanford sends out their decisions?
