A bit of a silly question—but since we’re all counting sheep here… I applied for a SSHRC postdoc in September feeling pretty good about my odds. Since then, though, I’ve landed a tenure-track position at a mid- to lower-tier institution. Now I’m wondering how seriously I should weigh my options if I do receive the SSHRC postdoc, or whether I should just hold onto the tenure-track job, given that those are often seen as the golden ticket. One thing I’ve been thinking about is whether having held a postdoc might make it easier to secure future SSHRC grant funding as a faculty member. I’m also wondering whether it would be strategically worthwhile to leave my current position and take up the postdoc at a top-tier university, with the hope of later landing a tenure-track job at a more research-intensive institution.

I thought some of you may be interested in knowing that contacting Grad chairs (sometimes) works. I was rejected from a humanities program in February and recontacted the Grad Chair of the department as soon as I received the Doctoral SSHRC and asked to be reconsidered. (S)He wrote back stating that the decision was, in short, overturned; I was admitted and received the formal letters and administrative papers ... And this is at one of the "Big 3" Canadian universities nonetheless! I would certainly advise to do it ASAP though.
