    SSHRC 2010

In my experience, it's pretty standard practice for departments to take the tuition out of the SSHRC. At least that's what mine did during my master's, and I know that's also U of T policy. Often departments make it mandatory to apply for external funding, as far as i know it's simply a way of them saving money. Might be non-negotiable.

hey everyone. when applying to sshrc for a doctoral award, you have to select the disciplinary committee (i think there's four or five to choose from) to evaluate your application. just wondering, but for someone who's doing political theory, should i have selected the committee that includes political science, or the committee that includes humanities such as philosophy and the classics? i chose political science, and did not receive a SSHRC. i am curious as to whether this might have been the dagger, considering that the committee i chose would have been much more social science-minded. i thought it would have been silly not to have chosen my main field of political science. any thoughts?
  3. While I understand the frustration towards online grammarians (though the post I criticized was indeed a complete wreck), I'm not sure why we ought to care less about grammar in academe. That's just a sad wish.
  4. That makes sense. And you didn't even have to take a shot at JHU to get your point across! Thanks for the lesson - I'll pipe down.
  5. I am very pleased to see that you've taken such an interest in me. However, I wouldn't confuse "vague scholarship" with borderline functional illiteracy, as you so eloquently have.
  6. Forget grad school. If I were you I'd focus on my ability to write coherent English.
  7. What a ridiculous post. I applaud your absurdity, Ferrero.
  8. Did anyone look into the "second field" option at Cornell? Tina Slater suggested that we e-mail the dept. first, and then she'd forward our materials. So I e-mailed the philosophy dept. to see if they are still accepting applications, but no one has responded. Anyone else trying this option?
  9. Anyone claiming the Johns Hopkins acceptance? I assume it's for theory.
  10. Still waitin' on some word from JHU, NSSR, Toronto (pols)
  11. Yeah I received the same note. But I find it difficult to believe that another department will seriously consider new applications at this time (especially since it will be clear that the field is indeed your "second choice"), let alone accept them. But maybe Cornell does something differently than other schools?
  12. Fair enough - no surprise. Still, there hasn't been much talk here about JHU's timetable. And what about the New School? Although if the signatures on this forum are any indication, there didn't seem to be many who applied there.
  13. So I've noticed a few have gotten accepted at JHU - what's the deal here, have they not sent out rejections yet? And any word on why Chicago's keeping many of us in the dark?
