  1. If you don't mind, what's your funding package for the MA program at CSU? Always wanted to compare MA vs PhD funding numbers.
  2. I don't know much about American U's Media Studies program, but Kent State's isn't too shabby! Kent State is outside of Cleveland, which would be some tough winters, but on the flipside, DC is really freaking expensive. I think you need to look at the profs you're wanting to work with, and which school will provide you with the best opportunities for a job when you graduate. Have you contacted students at each school to get their take on the program? I think a lot of people overlook this, but students are the best insight you can get on any one program.
  3. Anyone else read/hear about this? This is getting ridiculous! http://chronicle.com/article/Campus-Leaders-in-Pennsylvania/126670/
  4. Anything without references to admission committee, school, rejection, or a combination or similarity to any of those words/combinations!
  5. Depressed? Yes, mucho! Prozac all around!
  6. Anyone keeping count of how long it is until 4/15? I need an official timer...
  7. My final application is already turned-in, but the grad secretary noted that I could continue to send in documents as needed. I've been adjuncting now for 3 semesters, and really believe my teaching experience is a major plus. While they are training researchers, my field (Communications) does heavily utilize TAs for teaching. Is it appropriate, or hopefully helpful, to send my teaching evaluations (which are all really positive)? I'm trying to send anything that will put me "over the top". My GRE is low, and I'm fighting to get my first admit!
  8. Glad someone is squared away. Congrats!
  9. I'm on an unranked waitlist, and waiting on one admission decision. My admission decisions will take every bit of 4/15...
  10. Had my final interview today, which was quite short! I asked more questions then they did, but it was a good interview. About 30-minutes before the interview, I recieved an email from the grad coordinator telling me that I had some funding to come visit. So, looks like I'll be visiting the campus literally the day or two before they make admission decisions. Way to put in a good last impression, literally.
  11. I'm in my third semester of adjuncting, and have gotten really great evals every semester. My research level is low, and my GRE is low, so i'm trying to strengthen my application in any way possible. thoughts on adding my teaching evals? I know some schools will not see them as important, while some will. Any pros/cons to sending them?
  12. I don't think I'll remember what that is until April 15!
  13. Have my last phone interview tomorrow! I've had a few so far, and feel quite comfortable, but tomorrow is the interview for the last program I've yet to hear an admission decision from. My other admit decisions have all been No's, so this one is extremely important. Any tips you all for really kicking some a$$ on this interview? I have a list of questions already made from other posts on Grad Cafe, but always looking for more.
  14. I know this is better suited in another forum, probably Applications, but I'm a Mass Comm guy, this is a Comm thread, so why not post here? I've been through many phone interviews before, but tomorrow is my final one and I really need a stellar interview. I've got the normal list of questions, but I'm wondering if anyone has any they'd really recommend. I have no admits up to now, so I really need to kick some a$$ tomorrow. Any suggestions?
  15. I guess I shoulda specified PhD programs! I checked it out, and their deadline was 2/1, but they do have spring admission.
  16. Avatar: Italian Serie A soccer (football) team!
  17. Two of my LinkedIn invites accepted, so apparently they're interested too. Whoo!
  18. If you've never been to Denver, it rocks! A really, really nice city.
  19. Was told today that LSU had over 45 people applying for 4-5 spots. The most applicants they've ever had. Man, can this season be any rougher?
  20. I agree with the post above... I think PhD programs tend to be more narrow in both the research focus, as well as the professor(s) individuals work with. During an MA, you are really just learning the process of research, as well as having your first teaching experiences. PhD programs are a whole 'nother ballgame! You're MA should be about learning as many theories as possible, and learning your true passions. When/if you enroll in a PhD program, they'll want you to be focused on a theory/project/area, as well as have a mentor in mind. The biggest advice I have for an MA student: get a thesis topic early, and get it rolling! Make yourself available for conference opportunities, as well as working with profs on research. I didn't do a thesis in my MA (supposed to be a terminal degree, then I got laid off), and am now kicking myself in the a$$ for not doing it. Enjoy school!
  21. PM me if you don't mind. I have a phone interview soon, and just wondering about the overall interview.
  22. I've been in contact on several occasions with a few POIs at schools I'm applying too (and currently waiting for results). I want to add these people to LinkedIn, as we all know how important networking is, especially in academia. I plan on staying in touch with these contacts even if I don't get accepted to the schools where they currently work. Would these seem like a bad idea to anyone? I've already sent the invites, so here's hoping not too many people say, "Yes, you're an idiot!"
  23. Rejected at LSU. Too many applicants, blah blah blah.
  24. Just emailed the grad coordinator again. I hope I'm not annoying the poor guy, but rather showing my sincere interest in the program. Arg!
