  1. Graduate seminar may refer to the doctoral coursework component, usually in the first year and maybe the second year too at some universities. In such cases it refers to different subjects such as e.g. Anthropology 8000, Social Policy 8001 It may also refer to the mandatory general weekly/monthly meetings for all research students run by your department (e.g. History department) for all research students e.g. MPhil, EdD etc in your field. The word seminar distinguishes it from a lecture and tutorial. It means it is a bit like a traditional lecture and tutorial combined. So you need to check. The internal departmental seminars are less common e.g. monthly and focuses on research methods and thesis writing issues. The other seminars, if this is what it refers to, are more regular and involve assessments, exams related to different subject areas. Annie
  2. I forgot to say...I am also not very good at tech stuff... and have never tried out grammerly... Has anyone online used grammerly? I believe it is free? Cheers Annie
  3. Hi Everyone I am a PhD student and English grammar has never been my strong point. I am keen to start/develop a thread and PVT with people who want to start a discussion about grammar. Supervisors don't really teach this. I am very keen to swap open access free resources that are intended as quick guides for research students. I got to be honest, grammar handbooks, I just don't have time to read them. The sort of stuff attached appeals to me as it is succinct. Anyone know of other similar short resources (open access) tailored for busy PhD students? 4. I really suggest that you document this carefully via emails etc, as you can demand an extension and reexamination etc if things go against you. Speak with the student union. I feel for you as this has happened to me more than once and I have done the above and my supervisors lifted their game. The university must have a policy document you can refer to. The Univ of London has a policy document that stipulates that edits must be returned in 30 days at all times of the year even during shutdown, as in theory you have two supervisors and they should not take leave or they can answer emails on leave. Once I showed my supervisors this policy document I was never messed around again. Hope this helps :-) Annie
  5. Hi Axelerate I am doing my PhD in sociology even though I did my masters degree in politics. I was very nervous at the start having never even studied sociology before, yet did very well in my doctoral coursework. Enough about me, my point is about you - sociology is the sort of field you can pick up quick as it is about contemporary society - the world around us. So long as you can master agency-structure, and wrap your head around the ideas of agency-structure, group differences, power and social structure hierarchies, you should be fine. I think this is a great starting point. These points all come together. Sociologists focus on social problems and social policies. http://www2.hawaii.edu/~manicas/pdf_files/courses/AgentStructure.pdf Best Annie :-) AgentStructure.pdf
