  1. Hi, I am planning to apply to Statistics and Biostatistics PhD programs for Fall 2019. I'm an international student. I completed my undergraduate degree in Statistics and Math in a top 15 university. I'm currently doing a MS in Biostatistics at a top 15 university. I have a undergraduate major GPA of 3.5, I had some mental health issues that screwed up my life pretty badly during my junior and senior year, which caused a major decline in my grades in a few statistics and math classes. I've been continuously involved in one research project after another since summer of sophomore year. After I began my MS program, I tried a lot harder to put my life back on tracks, I also did my best to take graduate versions of the courses I did badly in college to try to make up for them. My graduate GPA is 3.85. As of now, I've had 4 research projects, one poster at a Statistics conference, and no publication, although I am working towards publication, so I may have one or two papers in submission by the time I apply. I'm also taking the GRE math subject test later this Fall. I'm still assembling my list of schools, but right now I have Columbia Stat, UPenn Stat, Harvard Biostat, CMU Stat, Yale Stat and Data Science, and JHU Biostat. I would appreciate any honest assessment of my profile, suggestions to programs that would suit me, and any suggestions to improve my application. Many thanks in advance!!!
  2. I'm in grad school and I'm recently working towards a publication in the journal of statistical software. This would be my first attempt at publication. I'm also planning on applying for a PhD in Statistics or Biostatistics later this year. Would having a paper submitted for publication help with my application? Is publishing in a software journal considered not as strong as publishing in a regular journal or a conference?
  3. Hi, I double major in Statistics and Mathematics and I am applying to graduate school this coming fall. I was going to apply for doctoral degree in Statistics. However, in my research of schools, I've come across this department called "Management Science & Engineering" (MS&E) at Stanford. It seems that it covers a wide variety of topics and ask students to have pick a focus; among the focuses there are certain statistics related paths. I am very confused and I would really appreciate it if someone could explain to me the difference of this program and regular Statistics doctoral programs. Which is more competitive, what are the career paths like? what is the difference in research? what are the differences in the training and the application requirement? Another weird thing I noticed is that I can't find a department called management science and engineering at other schools. I also couldn't find a ranking page for MS&E so I am a a complete lost to gauge the quality of Stanford's MS&E..... Do each school have a different name for it? Very lost...... Would really appreciate your advice! Thanks very very much!
  4. This is probably a silly question but I was wondering what the appropriate length of a CV would be for applying for doctoral programs in Statistics? I can't seem to fit everything in one page without cutting out certain significant parts. Thank you!
  5. Hi, I am an undergrad double majoring in Stats and Math. I am applying for doctoral program in Statistics this Fall. I am on my third research project. I wanted to ask the professors who worked with me on the projects to write recommendation letters for me. However, my supervisor on my first research project was not a professor nor a faculty member, she is the Research Data Infrastructure Manager at a research department at my school. My first research project was one of many projects in a larger program and the person who oversaw the entire program is a Math professor. He and I did not have as much interaction together but he has been at all of my presentations and my poster session. Who should I ask for the recommendation letter? Would asking a non-faculty work against me? Would love to hear your thoughts!
  6. Thank you! I feel ambivalent about attaching my cv since it would have my GPA on it and I am afraid my GPA would not work in my advantage... Especially for professors at top universities.
  7. Hi, I am an undergraduate from a top ten statistics department. I double major in Statistics and Math. I am thinking about applying to a doctoral program in Statistics this coming Fall. I have been researching some grad schools and I have a few professors whose research interests are very similar to mine and I would really like to reach out to them and express my interest. However, I am not sure if reaching out to them would work in my favor. I did not start considering the doctoral path until very recently and my GPA isn't as good as I want it to be. My Stat major GPA is around 3.55 and my advanced major GPA (starting from junior year) is around 3.75. I have been working hard to improve my grades and I think by the time I submit my application I can increase my Stat major GPA to around 3.73 and my advanced major GPA to around 3.85. I am on my third research project but I have no publications so far, I am working hard towards one...... On the one hand, I am concerned that my grades would not leave a good impression with the professors; on the other hand, I really want to reach out to these professors and express my interest and I think my research experience might be an advantage for me. Should I reach out to the professors? If I do, should I mention or try to explain my grades issues? I would love to hear your suggestions on the topic, thanks!
  8. I am applying for doctoral program in statistics this fall and I am aiming for the best programs such as UW and Stanford. I have 159 on verbal, 170 on quantitative and 4 on writing. Is this score enough or should I retake the GRE test?
  9. I am applying for doctoral program in Statistics this Fall but I am not sure if I want to remain in academia after I get my degree (although this is still way in the future). I am very curious about what kinds of career opportunities in the industry that Statistics PhDs can pursue. Would love to hear your suggestions! Thanks a lot!
  10. I double major in Statistics and Math in a top 10 university and I am applying to doctoral program in Statistics this fall. The Stats department at my school is pretty well known but the math department isn't as good. My major GPA in Stats is around 3.75, which is probably on the low end but my grades in the advanced stats courses are all As except for one class. I have participated in three separate research projects but so far I do not have any publications. My dream schools are Stanford, UW, CMU, Harvard and Columbia, which are of course all really competitive programs. I am still doing research and I am hoping to have something deliverable before submitting my application. However, I am curious about how having or not having any publication can effect chances in getting into my dream schools. Would love to get your opinions. Thanks very much!
  11. Hi, thanks for the advice~ I am confident that I will get an A the second time. However, I am curious how much this one bad grade will hurt me assuming I do well the second time, especially with top programs like Stanford, UW and Harvard. Thanks for your help!
  12. Hi, thanks for responding~ The class was real analysis.
  13. I am applying for doctoral program in Statistics this fall. I got a D in a pretty important math class, this was really unexpected and I am really worried that it would jeopardize my application. I know that GPA is very important even this is not a stat class and doesn't count towards my major GPA. I am taking this class again before submitting my application and I am confident that I will get a much much better grade this time. I would really appreciate it if someone could explain to me how much this is going to affect chances especially with top programs? I really really appreciate your help!
