  1. What do you mean? I received an email 5 minutes ago and wasn't recommended, so I don't think that's it! I'm just happy that I have an answer, and honestly I think I am perfectly happy not to go on the Fulbright -- my life is a bit easier in terms of graduate school applications, personal life, etc. Good luck, and I hope you hear back soon
  2. Wow, I really can't believe that it's January already! I guess we should be hearing back within the next two weeks or so? Luckily (or unluckily) I've been distracted because I've been studying for a huge exam that I'm taking at the end of the month.
  3. I was doing so well in not thinking about it up until now... Now it feels like we're actually getting close
  4. While I do agree that the cultural component of arts projects may be more straightforward, I actually think that a decent number of public health and psychology/sociology research is cultural – there is a strong argument that the majority of such research has been historically conducted in Western countries, and such findings may not be relevant in other societies. For example, the worldwide prevalence of mental disorders varies dramatically by country (e.g. The US has a much higher rate of ADHD diagnoses than anywhere else). Why is that? What societal reasons lead to ADHD being overdiagnosed in the US and underdiagnosed in other countries? How might one adjust the ADHD diagnostic criteria in a country like Japan, where children are expected to spend a much longer time focusing on their studies? And so on.
  5. If you go to the Applicants Home Page, it states that the 2017-2018 competition is now closed. I just looked at a PDF of my submitted application and it says "Application for Study, Research, or English Teaching Assistant 2017-18" as well. All I remember is that the stats for the China Open Research grants are the same now as they were when I was thinking to apply over the summer, which wouldn't make sense if they were updated stats from the previous cycle.
  6. Aren't those statistics from last year, though (2016-2017)? I think our application cycle is 2017-2018.
  7. If anything, I learned how to write a compelling personal statement with a cohesive theme! (Or at least I thought it was compelling at the time haha). Unfortunately, it's a little too specific to my project/country for me to use it for graduate school applications, but I agree that the application process was helpful in and of itself. It's not that I think I was a bad writer before, but I do think there's a difference between a standard "cookie cutter" personal statement and a meaningful one.
  8. I think it depends on the country and number of applicants. If there are enough applicants who both have some teaching experience and some language experience, why would they pick someone with considerable teaching experience but no language experience? I suppose it's harder to seem truly interested and invested in the country (a.k.a. if you have so much teaching experience, why not become a teacher in the US – why that Middle East country?).
  9. Good luck! I have family from Guangzhou The affiliation would be with Peking University. And I know – I've never really been in the big cities for too long (most of my family is from more rural areas) so it would definitely be an interesting experience.
  10. Beijing, unfortunately. I know they recommend that you apply to smaller cities, but the contact/affiliation I had happens to be a professor in Beijing so what can you do? I am really excited, though – I think that the rest of my application comes together well so I hope it's enough to jump over that hurdle. What about you?
  11. Finally submitted my application today, too! I had wanted to submit last night, and had a complete freak out when I looked at the specific transcript rules (the website said unofficial transcript on one page, and official transcript on another). The poor guy at the registrar who I talked to this morning at 8 AM ?? I'm extremely glad that everything is done and submitted... by the time they get back to us, I may have forgotten about it!
  12. I know that my fellowships office said that the Fulbright portal gets a lot slower as the deadline draws closer – more and more people are trying to upload things and submit their applications!
  13. Thanks! And yeah, it is a little strange -- one of my friends applied for a different scholarship, and the office actually told him one of his letters wasn't good enough and that he needed another one! Good luck to you as well, what country are you applying to?
  14. There were info sessions in mid-June and early July for many different scholarships and fellowships. The internal deadline was due in late August, and I had my campus interview last week (they're supposed to send us feedback from the committee pretty soon). Letters of rec were sent straight to the fellowship office and we're not supposed to register them online until we get feedback (I think this is so they can make sure that we have good letters). Our final applications are due this week so the fellowship office can get a once-over before the actual deadline. Luckily, they allow everyone who wants to apply to apply -- in some other national fellowships, they can only nominate a few people every year.
  15. Good luck to everyone in putting the finishing touches to your applications! My university's internal deadline is near the end of this week, and I'm glad to finally get this application in.
