I'm a little annoyed with two of my students right now. I gave a quiz and these two students completely missed how I wanted them to answer a question. So they basically lost over 1/5 of the points on the quiz because they didn't understand that I wanted them to circle one of two choices next to each statement in a list (instead they just circled one of the five statements in the list and I'm not entirely sure why). I emailed them through our online course system so that they'd both get an email and see a notice that they have a message when they login to the course system (which they have to do multiple times per week for their classes).

I asked them to come to my office hours to reanswer the question, but neither showed up. They also didn't email me back and it's been two days, and I can also see that they've visited my course page since I sent the email, so they should have seen it. Maybe they just don't care.

I don't think you should worry too much about it. You have reached out to them and they have blatantly ignored you. You've done your part as their instructor. If anything - I would probably reach out to them in class at the end of your session if you really want to figure out why they are avoiding you? Cheer up! I think you're doing a great job.

Hey congratulations! I'll also be starting an MA in European History in the fall and moving out of my home state for the first time ever. Good luck and good work!

Thank you! Congrats and Good Luck to you as well! Where are you attending?

  3. Technically, the school I'm attending in the fall gave me a GA (Graduate Assistantship) but I have to work 20 hours a week helping whomever I'm assigned in the Fall (won't know until I'm there) my primary responsibilities will be grading and possibly helping with a discussion or two if the prof isn't available. Full stipend & tuition waiver, 17K~/year (COL is low) for a two year program contingent on the fact I maintain at least a 3.0!

  4. I just registered for classes at my M.A. institution on Tuesday ~ 3 courses and a GAship (fully funded, yay!). I am excited to get back into the swing of things (I'm already running for some positions in Phi Alpha Theta) and anxious to get the hell out of my job since I know the end is in sight. I plan on quitting in by the end of June. 5 days after my last day we leave for a 10 day trip to France (woo!! my first time), a conference in the beginning of July for my bf's field, and then we make the 600-700 mile move from SoCal to New Mexico. I'm having trouble being productive at work and concentrating on my tasks (even then we've been super slow). I'm looking up apartments, but can't really do anything as most are opening for monthly basis versus a few months out. Probably won't secure housing until end of may/beginning of June. I'm just really really excited to be back in academia/history after working in law for the last few years out of undergrad but also nervous because this is the first time I will be away from friends and family ever.

So I got tired of waiting and the anxiety was getting to me. I had to send an email to the grad coord at umich wgo notified me of my rejection. I am very much relieved

I was emailed my rejection at U Mich this morning as well. Oh well! I know where I am attending :) fully funded MA and I will be back to apply to for PhD's in two years!

  6. Got my third admit! OSU, not sure about funding, it wasn't really clear. Halfway through waiting for my schools to respond! Madison and Michigan are apart of that so I'm feeling not so great about the silence since I know people are starting to hear from them. I'm also waiting on Kansas. I saw some admits this morning. So who knows?

Update from Wisconsin Madison - I just received an offer via email from the DGS. It's a great fit for my work so I'm very happy - it looks like this is a week for hearing back.

Congrats!!! I hope I hear back soon! Going to be anxiously checking email and the portal.

At the end of my phone interview, my poi said that this week the regional caucuses of the dept meet to decide who they would like to admit. Then about a week later the heads of each caucus will meet to make final decisions- hope the timeline helps!

Thanks! So it's looking like the second or third week of February that we will find out decisions.  To be honest, I think I might get rejected from U of Mich because when I reached out to my POI she said that she wasn't taking students and that European History probably wasn't accepting many students regardless. But that's why this was my reach school. I'm ready for application season to be over, lol.

  9. Bump! I just found out I was accepted to NMSU for Fall 2017 History Program. I am seriously considering the offer. Although I visited back in December, I was wondering where the best apartments/houses to live are? BF and I are looking for a 2 bed place with room for our dog & cat! Thanks :)

  10. I just also received an informal acceptance from NMSU for their M.A. program and an offer of a 20/hr week Assistantship. Literally, I can not believe how well this week is going. I was not expecting to hear anything until Feb-March for every program I applied to. Praise the History Gods!

Thank you so much! Congrats on yours as well!

Congrats! I also applied at UNL for the PhD program. I received the "we made a decision and it has been sent to the graduate school for review" email two days ago, but I have not heard anything from them since. Nervous energy abounds!

I hope that means you're in! Best of luck :)

Late post here...sorry! I have received acceptances from Michigan State (1/23) and UNL (1/24), both PhD programs. Hopefully this is some assistance for those who are waiting. Best of luck to you all.

That's awesome!!!! Did you get invited to the New Student Welcome Weekend at UNL?

  13. Guys! I got in! First school to hear from this application cycle: University Nebraska Lincoln, M.A. program. Got the email from my POI personally and then an email from the department minutes later. Waiting for a formal letter with funding info. I applied to 6 M.A. programs and 2 M.A./Ph.D. programs. Literally so excited and happy.

Sorry to increase anxiety! I wouldn't take the lack of contact as a bad sign - to me the email felt more like they are just finalising their list and trying to scope out more info on some students, i.e. the how much do you really want to go here question. If you've already made it super clear that you're keen then an extra email might be unnecessary. My field is modern US/gender and sexuality.

It's okay. I've accepted that this process just makes one very anxious. Especially since it seems like History is taking forever to come out with admission results this cycle. The person who I want to work with directly is specialized in the work I did during my undergrad thesis. So I'm hoping and wishing that she will want to work with me. My field is French History, World War II/Post World War II, Gender and Sexuality.

To those also waiting on Wisconsin Madison, I received an email from my POI that says they are close to making decisions, they are only selecting a small incoming group from a pool of very competitive candidates, I am in the top bracket, and they want to maximise the chance that candidates will accept their offers. There's also a more personal note from my POI re how it's a great fit etc - U-WM's faculty is like a dream given my interests. Did anyone else get this email and also does anyone have any tips re responding? It's definitely not an admission - seems more like an opportunity to convince them that I want to go there.

Bahhhh! This makes me very nervous and unsure of my application now. My POI told me straight up that she doesn't connect with students until after they are admitted to the program so my well-written thought out intro email and questions kinda felt wasted and like she wasn't accepting students. Feels even more so since your POI seems very involved.  What's your field in? As for advice, I'm not sure on that one since this is my first ever cycle as well.

OMG same... shout out to that 4:30 AM work out club. Also since I've asked a few questions already figured I would introduce myself as well. Graduated in 2015 from a SLAC (double major MLL/Classics) with a 3.66 GPA (damn you Ancient Greek) and good GRE scores (again not as important). Spent the year after graduation teaching English in France, and this year I'm completing a service year with AmeriCorps and am hopeful for the upcoming application cycle. My interests are in Modern Europe, specifically I want to look at gender and sexuality during France's Third Republic. I am applying to seven PhD programs (thank god AmeriCorps gets me fee waivers for a majority of these places). That's about it! I hope everyone is not feeling too stressed right about now, even though I know I am struggling right now with rereading my writing sample and cringing at argument holes that I didn't even notice when I first wrote it.

What school's are you applying to if you don't mind me asking? The struggle bus is real right now and I am exhausted and want to be done with everything, yesterday. I am looking to also study Gender/Sexuality in France and perhaps a compare and contrast with Italy or Germany in regard to the Vichy Regime.

Hey I'm from Fresno Ca and am moving to Fullerton soon. What are some cheap apartments that are in walking distance of the school? It's 3x cheaper in Fresno so the cost is going to be hard for me to get used to. Is anyone else moving to this are?

Hey! Welcome to Fullerton! I went to CSUF for undergrad. Get used to outrageous COL - Orange County is expensive. However, check out the Sturbridge Apts off of Placentia and Yorba Linda. Cheapest for walking distance to school, about only a mile and a half from the backside of campus (baseball field/lot a). The last time I was there rent was about 1295-1345 depending on the bedroom!
