Here's the basic structure of mine (given how late it is in the season you may need to modify it to reflect that aspect):

    "Dear Professor [Name],

I'm an applicant for the philosophy phd program at [university] and I have not received information regarding my current status. At the risk of being too forward or seeming over-eager I was reaching out to you to see if I can learn about my current status. Provided that there is no information you can give out at this time, do you have an estimate on when information will be sent out? I look forward to hearing back from you.

    Thanks,

    [My real name]"

Here's what I wrote, and received a response within 24 hours from each program I emailed. Hope this will help someone!

    Dear [prof],

I write to ask whether I have been accepted, rejected, or waitlisted at your PhD program for the academic year 2018-19. Here is my applicant information: [name], [applicant ID].
Thank you for your time and attention. I look forward to hearing from you.

    Best,
    [my name]

Waitlisted at Indiana with an invitation to visit. Is inviting people high on the waitlist to visit a common practice?

I'm waitlisted at U Cincinnati, and they are flying me out there Thursday for the grad recruiting weekend. Not sure about elsewhere, though. I'm also on the waiting lists of UW Seattle, U Minnesota, and U Iowa, and they have not offered to fund my visits. So, I'm grateful to UCinC for their generosity.

Hello! I'm quite new to this forum but after reading some other threads I thought this might be a great place to get the information I'm after.

First a bit of backstory: I've been admitted to Michigan State's law school and I am interested pursuing graduate work in philosophy alongside that degree. I'm not a philosophy major (just a minor) so I would have to go through the master's program before starting on the Ph.D. I'm interested in MSU's program because their faculty seems to be very much focused on social and political philosophy, along with philosophy of law, which are areas of the discipline that I love working with. I've combed over the philosophy department's and the law school's website but I still have a few lingering questions.

Here are my biggest questions: How hard is it to gain admittance to the master's/Ph.D. program? I meet all of the M.A.'s numbers requirements in the graduate handbook on their website but I haven't been able to find any admissions statistics. Also, what is the MSU philosophy department's reputation? And how easy would it be to gain admittance to the Ph.D. program from the master's?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm deciding between a couple of law schools and the ability to pursue a philosophy degree at MSU is a big draw for me over the other options that I have.

Hi! I am so excited to read your post. I have just been accepted to Michigan State's PhD Philosophy program, and I am applying to the law school right now! I hope to gain acceptance at the law school to custom-craft my JD/PhD Phil program. One really great thing about MSU Law is their flexibility. So, I hope we can mutually support one another! I welcome all tips on writing the law school personal statement! (The philosophy statement of purpose is an entirely different animal than the law school pos.)

I'm not sure of the odds for acceptance into MSU's philosophy MA program. The overall acceptance rate for philosophy PhD programs is about 2% (it's a near-miracle that I was accepted!). Don't let this discourage you from pursuing it, though. Your training in law will make you a better philosopher and thus a better applicant, whether at MSU or elsewhere. And MSU's philosophy dept is AWESOME. Full stop. I encourage you to reach out to them! I'll be visiting on March 15-18, during which time I'll check out the law school. If you have any questions you'd like me to ask them about the MA, let me know. I'll try to get some idea of what your odds are for the MA, and whether they are likely to advance you to the PhD from there.

Please don't hesitate to reach out - if you want to text, message me here and I'll give you my #. We need to stick together as philoso-law people! :)

I'll try. I actually think University of Iowa is the best fit for me out of all the schools I applied to (20), so, I'm not sure if I'll be declining them at all. However, if I do, I'll tell them to only give my offer to comrade Bookchin. :D

Haha! Thank you! :) We have tough decisions ahead!

Hi, I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge on how to disclose a disability when applying for grad school. I was born legally blind and would like the admissions committee to be aware of this. Any feedback would be great, thanks! :)

Hi! I disclosed my disability in a short paragraph at the end of my SOP/personal statement. I was just accepted to Michigan State for a dual JD/PhD in philosophy with guaranteed full funding for five years. Be super proud of your work and goals! If you have any more specific questions, please don't hesitate to reach out! Here for you! :)

Thanks to whoever declined their offer from Madison, I just received an offer from the waitlist.

    This brings me to 5:

    University of Illinois at Chicago
    University of Rochester
    University of Iowa
    Boston College
    University of Wisconsin, Madison

I hope to get the list down to 2 by next Friday, so if you're waiting, there's hope.

UChicago just started sending out the conciliatory 'recommended for MAPH' emails.

Better than nothing I suppose - and no hard feelings; wishing all the best to those who got in this cycle!

I also received UChicago's rec for MAPH. Do you know if they do this for all applicants not admitted to the PhD? Is this master's something I should keep in my mind as a backup?

I'm not to sure about my chances either but we're often bad judges of our own abilities. Given that most intellectuals experience some form of imposter syndrome this isn't surprising. I was also told the same things about Political Philosophy/Political Theory crossover. Political Science departments are more likely to hire Political Philosophers but the reverse almost never happens (The only one I'm aware of is Jerry Gaus at Arizona).

Political Theory being more descriptive as opposed to more normative (like political philosophy) is another reason I choose Political Philosophy over it. Where is the UMN in your preference order for programs? I'm from Minnesota originally and grew up in a northern suburb of Minneapolis. I can't tell you much about the city however. We never went down there much and I went to undergrad farther up north in Duluth. Best of luck to you too!

Hey thanks and good luck to you, too! Is UMN on your app list? If so, have you heard anything? Along with Michigan and other top-ranked programs, UMN is actually one I prefer. I'm looking to do a JD/PhD Phil and the law school is top 20, but I am also interested in their intra-AOS work, e.g. they are hosting a Logic and Feminist Theory conference in a couple of months. How cool is this? I would totally LOVE to be a fellow in their Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Global Change (ICGC).  I have reasons to attend UM outside of their excellent program. One of my best friends lives in Minneapolis and I really miss crazy weather - thunderstorms, blizzards, and the like. I grew up in rural northern Montana, then lived in Chicago, so... Los Angeles is so boring and miserably hot. Weird extra-academic rationale, but this is all to say I would love to go to UMN. Wherever we do our phd's, our lives will be much easier if we approve of "what it is to live in city x." Btw, Duluth is SO gorgeous! I went camping up there on the WI border and loved it!

I'm in a different field than you, but if you end up going to UMN, let me know if you have questions about the city. I live in Minneapolis and know the area fairly well.

Thank you! I will be visiting the campus/phil dept on Feb 23-24 and would love to meet and chat! My name is Grace Cebrero - find me on twitter @GraceNonToxic and I'll give you my cell so we can text. (or on FB @GraceJoyCebrero, too, whichever works for you)

  10. Hi, I do mostly moral, social and political philosophy, and epistemology. I choose Political Philosophy because it is critical, creative, and prescriptive, whereas Political Science is merely descriptive. I applied to many (too many) PhD's and two MA's. Thus far, I'm waitlisted at UMinn and UCincinnati with no rejections or acceptances. My writing sample abstract is attached, if you're interested. Obviously, I am obsessed with all things Murray Bookchin. Best of luck to you!
