  1. Here's what I wrote, and received a response within 24 hours from each program I emailed. Hope this will help someone! Dear [prof], I write to ask whether I have been accepted, rejected, or waitlisted at your PhD program for the academic year 2018-19. Here is my applicant information: [name], [applicant ID]. Thank you for your time and attention. I look forward to hearing from you. Best, [my name]
  2. Does anyone know if NYU is sending rejections out on a rolling basis?
  3. I'm waitlisted at U Cincinnati, and they are flying me out there Thursday for the grad recruiting weekend. Not sure about elsewhere, though. I'm also on the waiting lists of UW Seattle, U Minnesota, and U Iowa, and they have not offered to fund my visits. So, I'm grateful to UCinC for their generosity.
  4. Hi! I am so excited to read your post. I have just been accepted to Michigan State's PhD Philosophy program, and I am applying to the law school right now! I hope to gain acceptance at the law school to custom-craft my JD/PhD Phil program. One really great thing about MSU Law is their flexibility. So, I hope we can mutually support one another! I welcome all tips on writing the law school personal statement! (The philosophy statement of purpose is an entirely different animal than the law school pos.) I'm not sure of the odds for acceptance into MSU's philosophy MA program. The overall acceptance rate for philosophy PhD programs is about 2% (it's a near-miracle that I was accepted!). Don't let this discourage you from pursuing it, though. Your training in law will make you a better philosopher and thus a better applicant, whether at MSU or elsewhere. And MSU's philosophy dept is AWESOME. Full stop. I encourage you to reach out to them! I'll be visiting on March 15-18, during which time I'll check out the law school. If you have any questions you'd like me to ask them about the MA, let me know. I'll try to get some idea of what your odds are for the MA, and whether they are likely to advance you to the PhD from there. Please don't hesitate to reach out - if you want to text, message me here and I'll give you my #. We need to stick together as philoso-law people!
  5. Haha! Thank you! We have tough decisions ahead!
  6. Hi! I disclosed my disability in a short paragraph at the end of my SOP/personal statement. I was just accepted to Michigan State for a dual JD/PhD in philosophy with guaranteed full funding for five years. Be super proud of your work and goals! If you have any more specific questions, please don't hesitate to reach out! Here for you!
  7. I was accepted to MSU today via email, so hopefully they'll release more results throughout the weekend! Best luck to you!
  8. I also received UChicago's rec for MAPH. Do you know if they do this for all applicants not admitted to the PhD? Is this master's something I should keep in my mind as a backup?
  9. Hey thanks and good luck to you, too! Is UMN on your app list? If so, have you heard anything? Along with Michigan and other top-ranked programs, UMN is actually one I prefer. I'm looking to do a JD/PhD Phil and the law school is top 20, but I am also interested in their intra-AOS work, e.g. they are hosting a Logic and Feminist Theory conference in a couple of months. How cool is this? I would totally LOVE to be a fellow in their Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Global Change (ICGC). I have reasons to attend UM outside of their excellent program. One of my best friends lives in Minneapolis and I really miss crazy weather - thunderstorms, blizzards, and the like. I grew up in rural northern Montana, then lived in Chicago, so... Los Angeles is so boring and miserably hot. Weird extra-academic rationale, but this is all to say I would love to go to UMN. Wherever we do our phd's, our lives will be much easier if we approve of "what it is to live in city x." Btw, Duluth is SO gorgeous! I went camping up there on the WI border and loved it!
  10. Thank you! I will be visiting the campus/phil dept on Feb 23-24 and would love to meet and chat! My name is Grace Cebrero - find me on twitter @GraceNonToxic and I'll give you my cell so we can text. (or on FB @GraceJoyCebrero, too, whichever works for you)
  11. Hi, I do mostly moral, social and political philosophy, and epistemology. I choose Political Philosophy because it is critical, creative, and prescriptive, whereas Political Science is merely descriptive. I applied to many (too many) PhD's and two MA's. Thus far, I'm waitlisted at UMinn and UCincinnati with no rejections or acceptances. My writing sample abstract is attached, if you're interested. Obviously, I am obsessed with all things Murray Bookchin. Best of luck to you! ABSTRACT From Locke to Bookchin.pdf
