  1. Hey folks! Sorry for posting something negative about housing and then disappearing for a month. This is what I wanted to warn people against: "All mid-rise apartments have one bedroom. When two single students are sharing, the living room may be converted into a second bedroom, separated from the kitchen by a privacy divider. In these cases, students often agree to switch places mid-year." I had a friend who lived in a "second bedroom" in EV and it was just the living room with a bed in it. No privacy. Terrible - they really shouldn't do that to adults. On East Palo Alto - EPA is only a 'ghetto' in comparison to West Palo Alto. It's actually a very interesting area with lots of nice neighborhoods. If you have a car, no reason not to live there. Just make sure to check the place out first. On Munger: I'm a joint JD/PhD student so I'm getting all the info on Munger. It will be mostly law students, though I suppose the exact percentage depends on how many JD students choose to live there. We have priority and then they give away the rest of the spaces. My impression, though, is that it's basically a law school dorm. Sure there are some spaces available though if you get lucky. Cheers.
  2. Hi! I just accepted an offer from the History Department (the rare Stanford fuzzy). I went there as an undergrad and am definitely over on-campus housing, so I'll be looking for an apartment. If anyone wants advice about housing or Palo Alto, PM me. All housing at Stanford is not equal, and you can definitely end up living in a common room as a grad student if you're not careful. Or if you get a bad draw number. Anybody looking to share a place off campus? Close by though, since I don't have a car.
  3. I am most interested in Lebanon & the OPT, but I marketed myself as a "Greater Syria" person to keep options open. Still, I was told flat-out by a potential advisor that I should write about Egypt because it's the biggest/most important country in the Arab world. Not sure whether having a less common focus (i.e. the Gulf, Syria) makes us unique or makes us irrelevent.
  4. I think the cohorts for ME are all pretty small this year. I know of 2 admits at NYU. A prof at UT Austin told me they weren't taking anyone this year. Stanford did take 2, but usually they only admit 1 so this is actually a big year from them. I feel really lucky to have two funded options to choose from. I applied to 9 programs, so that definitely helped my odds.

On NYU - I know of three people who were accepted about two weeks ago. Looks like they are just taking their sweet time to reject the rest of us...
