  1. Thank you so much for all of your input everybody. After much thought I've decided to take the path of social work. Having experienced an incredibly strenuous year of volunteer work in South Side Chicago, I feel very comfortable in my ability to avoid burnout. I'm a positive person with enough optimism to last me a lifetime! Again, I really appreciate all the responses.
  2. Hi everyone! I'm wondering if anybody is currently enrolled in any online programs and what they think of pursuing advanced education through those means. I'm moving to Chicago in a couple of weeks so my three schools I'm sending applications to are The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, Loyola, and National Louis. If anyone knows anything about those school as well I'd love to hear!
  3. Hello everyone, First time poster. I've recently earned my BS in Psych and was pretty sure on my path after this milestone, but things aren't quite as clear as they were while I was still in school. I want to work in a field where I am most needed, not in terms of position openings but service to the population. I love working with children and my feeling is that I can do the most good within a school, and in all honesty that's where I'd like to work. Teaching isn't quite for me so I've narrowed down my options to a school psychologist, counselor, or social worker. What would be most helpful would be to hear a little from anyone working in any of the fields I mentioned or in a similar one. What does a typical day look like for you? How long have you held the position? Future plans? What are some positives and negatives of the job? What surprised you after working a few months? Paper work is an unavoidable responsibility with any of these occupations, but what I'm looking for is the job that requires me to interact with and help individuals/groups more than anything else.
  4. Hey Nate, I'm right there with you on a great deal of all this. I'm curious as to why you made the switch from IO psych to School psych. It sounds like you've got plenty of work experience but not necessarily in the field you're interested in. I don't know how set you are on getting right into grad school, but have you considered taking a year to volunteer? I served with City Year a few years back and it's because of that year I found out I really enjoyed working in a school and with children. The program looks great on any CV, resume, or application and is a great opportunity to network.
