  1. I can second MarthUser's statement. Of course, you want to be as strong a candidate as possible, but it really does change significantly depending on the application year, to a level that it is out of your control. I know for a fact that there were stronger candidates than me on paper at a few different programs I got into, but when the time came the fit that I had was much better than others. Smarts and drive will probably get you the interview, but being interesting, having good questions, or at the end of the day just being an actual, socialized human being is often what will get you through the door--again, in my own experience.

  2. A little late to this thread, but the advice here is generally pretty good. I would suggest living on the Cambridge side of the Charles, even if that means you have to live a little farther out. The red line is quick and pretty reliable, so I would even look as far out as Davis Sq. That area leading up to Harvard is also incredibly bike-friendly, so you shouldn't have trouble getting around. Allston and Brighton do have some affordable housing, but as someone above suggested, it's much more sketchy (IMO) than the neighborhoods north of the city and it won't save you much time. Your price should be totally fine if you're open to living with others. If you want a place of your own, you CAN find studios (maybe a one bedroom?) for around $1300, you just have to dig deep in the mire that is Boston area Craigslist and not be too picky.

I had a good discussion regarding the Baylor waitlist (two weeks ago) with Dr. Nogalski as well. Their reasoning was very vague in that they have a diverse applicant pool in Theology for only two spots, so they want to make sure that they don't get two people who are doing the same kind of thing, essentially. In short, they don't rank because they want to play it by ear. FWIW, he lamentably told me when he called me that the one person who did accept would've likely been the spot I had a chance to get, so I think for me at least there's little to no chance at Baylor :(

I have yet to hear anything from Baylor re: the waitlist in my area (Church History). Getting really antsy about it...

Just got a call from Baylor. He stated that out of the two Theology spots they have offered, one has been accepted (for those waitlisted in Theology at Baylor...)

Did your POI contact you or was it the Grad. Director?

Sorry Knight George, I assumed that you were waitlisted at Marquette. I guess I don't know what your situation means. Still, I suspect that my point may be relevant somehow.

Perhaps. Hey, a little more knowledge can never hurt. We'll just see what shakes loose later in March, I suppose.

There were a number of accepted Marquette applicants at the weekend event (this past weekend) at Notre Dame. The ones that I heard from hadn't accepted their offers yet. My sense is that new offers will be handed down to people on the waitlists at Catholic institutions like Marquette and CUA if/when people who have offers from these institutions get preferred offers from ND and subsequently turn down Marquette and CUA.

Thanks. I didn't interview or anything--red flag #1-- but I know historically Marquette makes offers a little later than some of the other programs.

  7. Is it safe to assume Marquette's Historical Theology offers are all locked up? Haven't seen anything on the results page (Sys and Ethics, but not Historical), and my application is still open on the site...but no news at this point in the season starts to look more and more like bad news.

    Can anyone drop some knowledge?

I know it is still early, but I am kind of shocked how many people have received acceptance notifications already.

Me too! It's like this year is either all or nothing: Instant accept or total silence. I know it's just impatience. By March 1, we'll all be pretty well set either way.

It's a mutual concern for most of us and its has been noted in the History and Philosophy sections as well, participation in the forums has dropped off significantly.

On the flip though, the subreddit for Graduate School is very active, there's a subreddit for theology, and a separate one for Religious Studies but the activeness of the last fluctuates significantly. I'm not particularly active or aware in any others so I can't say much more.

It doesn't seem to be getting any better as the month progresses, either. Oh well, I guess we'll all just fly blind.

RE Questions about Marquette: Can confirm they are real, I have a Skype interview scheduled next Monday. Granting a short e-mail exchange with the guy who set it up, it doesn't seem to be a 'preliminary' interview. I also had one with Northwestern yesterday.

Congratulations! I'm just hoping they have a few more interviews to send out! Best of luck to you.

  11. It does seem a little odd about Baylor. That was me, actually, who posted and I was wondering the same thing. It seems like a lot of programs are just a tad later than they have been in starting the process. Holidays fell kinda weird this season, so maybe that's contributing to the calendar shift?

Congrats to those receiving the Indiana and Baylor interviews! Nice to see some activity pick up around here.

Speaking of interviews, anyone have some advice for some of the large-scale interview weekends? Is there a thread for such discussions?
