  1. Thanks! It's an awesome opportunity, and they'll be near the top of my list regardless of who else accepts me. My POI reached out to me a couple of weeks before the letter to clarify that I was their top choice for their track (they've handed me over to the military history guys) and he started recruiting me before I even had the official offer in hand.
  2. Hey! No word from Duke yet for me, but I've heard back from UNC -- official acceptance letter came on Friday, and I'm nominated for Royster Society & merit assistantship. Letter emphasized that they are only contacting me now because I'm nominated for those awards, so don't worry yet. I think you should expect the decision this week or next. UGPA: 3.683 (graduating in 3 years w/2 majors while playing DI football)/GREV: 166/GREQ: 156/GREAW: 4.0 My research area is American memory of WWII, but more specifically, I want to identify and examine what factors influenced the rise and staying power of the "good war" myth. Your quantitative credentials are pretty comparable to (if not better than) mine, so you've got a shot at UNC. Duke is likely the same as UNC; I think you'll be accepted at UGA.
  3. My official offer came today, so yours should be coming soon!
  4. Oh, you must be talking about Jay Smith. He makes a convincing case in his book that college athletes are being held back from the "education" which is the ostensible lynchpin of the indentured servitude which is big-time college sports. While I know for a fact that savvy and hard-working athletes can get the full educational experience they desire (I speak from personal experience as a football player), it truly was an arduous process that required me to surmount many obstacles -- both spoken and unspoken -- that many of my teammates weren't able to overcome. Even though my work is at the collision point of U.S. and military history and his is in early-modern France, if I go to UNC, Dr. Smith is probably one of the first faculty members to whom I am going to introduce myself.
  5. My POI gave me the same call, and he emailed me a few days later on the 19th to tell me that I was (unofficially) officially accepted and nominated for the fellowship. Not sure which fellowship it is, but the only one listed on the website that I'm eligible for is the Royster Society. Also got an email on Monday from the convenor of my track confirming my nomination for a "university-level" fellowship and also saying that the DGS would be sending me an official offer letter in the mail sometime this week.
  6. @OHSP, you're correct -- I'm in at Chapel Hill. It's an intriguing fit, and I'm excited to visit and learn more about the program. The Triangle seems to be a good location as well: cost of living is low, Duke and NC State are a short trip away, and the public transportation across the area (in addition to within the individual cities) seems to be adequate.
  7. Congrats! Great school, great area -- I applied there as well. Your acceptance doesn't bode well for me, since it looks like they've sent all of their acceptances on the same day in years past. The other blue school in the Triangle has offered me though, so I'm not sweating it too much.
  8. Hi all, I've been lurking around the site for some time, but I figured I'd jump in to the discussion now. I am a 3rd year undergrad at a highly regarded school who is graduating in the spring with two majors. I also played football, so I've been pretty busy for the past 3 years. As for my research, I'm fascinated by American memory of World War II -- I've got an article forthcoming where I argue that high school textbooks have contributed to the staying power of the "Good War" myth, and I want to do an even broader exploration (perhaps as a dissertation) of why the hell the American populace has this idea that WWII was a heroic backpacking trip across Europe and not the hellish time of moral ambiguity that it truly was. I applied to 11 schools this cycle, and my mentors encouraged me to go for broke considering the peculiarities of my application, so I went for Stanford, Harvard (American Studies), Columbia, Brown, NYU, UChicago, Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, Indiana, UC-Santa Barbara, and Emory. Today I heard from a POI at UNC, and he (unofficially, officially) informed me that I am accepted and nominated for a university-wide top-up fellowship, so you could say it's been a good day. Good luck to everyone!
  9. looks like you've got some folks fighting for you. I'd say that's good
