As I interviewed at School Psych Ph.D. programs this cycle, I came to learn that it is very difficult to get a neuropsych pre-doc internship from with a School Psych degree. Neuropsych sites tend to have an eye for clinical students. If you are really committed to neuropsych, apply to programs that have a neuropsych focus such as UT Austin and/or have opportunities for experiences in major children's hospitals. Just know that programs that push for 5 year completion will not foster the opportunities you need to be competitive. Most neuropsych students I met were going to finish their Ph.D. in 6 years and a few of them didn't end up matching.

It is possible to do neuropsych with a School Psych Ph.D., but it will be challenging and you should definitely make sure that you are choosing a program that has successfully placed students into neuropsych pre and post-doc internships.

Thanks for your advice, I will look into more opportunities for pre- and post-doc internships relevant to neuropsy. Thanks!

  2. I am just wondering... how likely is a doctorate in school psychology paves the first step to becoming neuropsychologist?

As far as I know, one has to have relevant neuropsy pre-doc and post-doc experiences, before you can take the board exam for certification. However, multiple broad certification websites and prospectus from psychology graduate schools enlist that the candidates must obtain PhD in clinical or counselling psychology... does that mean it is almost no hope for school psychologist?

Besides, there is one association who calls School Neuropsychology, which apparently recognized by APA for Continuing Education credits (https://www.schoolneuropsych.com/index.php?id=1). However, they note that there is no licensing body for accreditation as School Neuropsychologist.

Lastly, how likely is it for a School Psychology PhD candidate to obtain pediatric neuropsychology pre- and/or post-doc internships (if they prefer clinical psy. candidates, or is that true?)?

Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks!!!

OISE SCCP Rejection in the mail dated March 8. Good luck to everyone else!

Rejection here too! All the best to those accepted and the best luck to those who are on wait-listed!

I just feel that the grad school application itself is an enduring and strenuous journey, of which the successful admission to the program depends on a basket of factors including professor and research interest, and school factors. It is so difficult that's why it is also very sought after, as it changes the career prospect of our lives.

It can be bumpy and heartbreaking when we realize all the efforts go in vain for the coming academic year, and it's haunting when you think about how much materials to prepare all over again for the next one. This is no easy task, but we aren't battling alone! I somehow feel that getting rejected is better than rejecting others, because it means you stand a chance next year and will not leave hard feelings on the admission committees should you return to that school!

Getting a rejection can be due to competition against better candidates, unmatched research interest, or the professors have already been selecting students before we know it! It may not be personal, and we always have a second chance if we are determined this is the path to go!

Having an answer is better than having dead silence :)

My offer also said March 1st so I think it's definitely safe to say a second round would go out after the 21st

Thanks for the info! So if I still haven't received a letter from OISE for SCCP, does it mean that I am currently on the wait list automatically? Or there is elsewhere that I can get an update of status from?

I'm waiting to hear back from OISE as well. In the results section, people have written that they found out they were invited on ROSI. I've only been looking on the SGS website and haven't even heard about ROSI until now. Is there another website I am supposed to be referring to?

ROSI is the student website for U of T that enables students to check financial status, order transcripts and enroll courses etc. Those posters probably were or are students at U of T that they can log in with their lifelong student ID.

Nice!! I guess it'll be bad news if I haven't heard anything so far anyways ;) Thanks for the info tho!

Agree! Thanks for the heads up, it's somehow comforting although I did not heard anything anyways!

Ah ok, I really don't know how McGill works. Some of the results in past years have stated that they did not have an interview. So I am not sure if that is something they still do or if not being contacted means that you are not considered.

If it is the same as the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology, I think the professor would contact you individually if they are interested prior to changing status in the portal. And the professors have contacted some of us in late January, but the official result is not received nor the portal is updated by GPS.  Hope it helps!

It's so crazy how our lives could change (or not) over the next few weeks! I've been reflecting on that, and realize that I should be more grateful for the opportunities afforded to me to even apply. Regardless of what happens, it's important to keep things in perspective and recognize how privileged we really are. Hoping we all get good news over the next little while, and if not, hoping we all remain focused and positive as surely something better is in store for us :)

It is amazing when I rethink about the coming weeks would be soooooo pivotal to our future career! No matter our applications are successful or not, it is no failure by any means. Preparing a completed application for these graduate programs are no easy tasks that are done by a flick of a wand! Hold our heads high!

  9. How likely it is that no PhD is offered, when I graduated from the MA program?

Cos I'm freaking out.... I recently got accepted (notified by POI in e-mail) of the MA in School/Applied Child Psychology at McGill and was on cloud 9, but reading and reading about the prospectus gives chill down my spine!

Would someone please share their experience? Thanks a million!

PS Sorry for being an anxious freak...and school hasn't begun yet...

Has anyone heard back from Canadian schools yet? I applied to McGill (it's a long shot because I'm missing a couple courses they want but I have good GRE scores and references so I tried), and Mount Saint Vincent University. Both had January 15th deadlines so I'm hoping they're just later to extend invitations? Updates would be appreciated!!

For McGill, is it the MA in SACP?

I know this is a stressful time for many people here and I was in the same boat many times over and over (still haven't gotten in lol). But I just want to remind everyone that at the end of the day- this is just a graduate school program. I know it means a lot and may get you started on your career path, but all of you have the capability already there. Find what gets you fired up and makes you happy and follow it. Do it whether you get in or not and you will be happy anyway. This is just one option but what's needed to have fulfiling careers is already in you so try not to make this into more than it is- just one more option of making your career dreams come true. You will make it happen either way if you really want to and it will be just as amazing when you do :)

This is awesome! yes, we can always try again if things are not going in our expected ways. It will make us a more resilient individual for future ups and downs!
