@polisci13542 It was a comparative politics professor but not one I mentioned in my SOP (I'm guessing on the committee? Unclear).

@Comparativist the email I got was very informal, and I was told that I'd hear from the DGS later (today?).

@oakeshott, I'm guessing that the Yale posts were trolls (guessing? or maybe hoping?) And you're right, of course, but last year they came out on the 24th-26th (with a few people being notified on the 18th!!!) and I was hoping that downward trend would continue But hey, they're Harvard, they could notify us on April 14th and still compete for our affections.

@oakeshott End of February? I don't know if I can wait that long, although I guess I don't have a choice. Hoping your source is mistaken, but at least I know what to expect now.

I've RSVP'd for Berkeley, Princeton, and Columbia. Princeton and Columbia are on the same week luckily so I'll just stay an extra day in NYC, and then my super late Spring Break will start. Those are the only ones unless I miraculously get into Yale or Harvard. Luckily I'm only in two real classes this semester so I won't miss too much.

You are on fire! Congrats, congrats, congrats! I imagine you have a super tough decision to make now. Will you try to visit all your programs, or are you leaning towards some of the offers?

Nope. Some schools send out rejections earlier/at the same time as their acceptances. It sucks that your first notification was a rejection, but it's important to keep your head up. Good luck

Anyone claiming Yale?

YAY! It's been a great week for you! If you need to know anything about the campus, living in Ithaca, etc., PM me.

@oakeshott I'll be there! Luckily a very convenient trip from my current location.

I'd say wait until tomorrow to see if any rejections come out. Hopefully there are still some acceptances pending, but last year only one person claimed an acceptance so we don't have a lot of information to go on.

She's pretty great! I'm so pleased for you! You have some tough choices to make now, that's for sure. Are you going to be visiting at any point?

@oakeshott Very happy news, congratulations! Comparative, right? Do you have a regional interest? I was going to apply to Stanford but I didn't see many Latin Americanists I'd want to work with.

Fair enough. I think you've answered your original question for you--time to politely decline Penn. Will you be visiting Columbia, by the way? We might see one another there

@Monody I can't see a reason why they would rescind your offer, especially since it has already been approved by Columbia's GSAS. If there is no possible way you'll choose the other school, then I do think it is right to (when you are ready) politely decline their offer. My experience with this has been positive. A short, simple email thanking them for their acceptance but that you are choosing to pursue graduate school elsewhere will suffice. They may ask what school you are choosing otherwise, which I would tell them (they like to keep track), and then they'll probably just wish you well at your other school. That being said, if you aren't 100 percent sure I would hold on to that offer and visit. Rank does matter, and I you seem pretty decided, but there isn't any shame in not feeling decided.
