Except that, given what I've seen from placement data, the sub field rankings are just as questionable. And given that, as you acknowledge,the best place for a student has to be considered in light of many different factors, a bad list like USNWR ends up skewing admissions toward the "top" schools in spite all of those other factors, which seems to me to harm the profession by reinforcing arbitrary credentialism. 

They certainly are busy. I had my app done and submitted December 8th (due 1/15). My first two LOR writers submitted them about a week later, but the last one (my thesis advisor and the department chair) waited until the LAST minute. I asked him to write it way back in October but he submitted it about 4 hours before the deadline lol.

I got a UMass/Five College program acceptance email from the director of graduate studies in history yesterday (or technically notification that I've been recommended to the graduate school for acceptance). Official offer letter forthcoming in the next few weeks. No idea if they send all of their acceptances at once.

Wanted to report that this week I got a yes from Temple (email from director of graduate studies) and a no from Minnesota (I applied to the American Studies dept; letter posted to the online application system).
