  1. I have a feeling that no school will announce results today ?
  2. Expect to hear from UT-Austin as well
  3. Did you post your results twice? Because there are 2 UNC admits now ?
  4. Congrats! How did you hear about the UNC admit? Do you mind sharing your subfield?
  5. Wow it is so calm here today ?
  6. Yes. I contacted with the DGS and he confirmed it.
  7. Congrats! Hope we will get them soon.
  8. I claim an Emory admit too. Got a phone call from the DGS yesterday. Comparative.
  9. Yesterday, I was looking at schools in the 70-80 range because I was really anxious about my chances but today I got some good news from 2 different schools. As far as I know, you @deutsch1997bw have a strong profile and I believe that you will get some great offers. We all just need a little more patience I guess.
  10. Congrats! I am also claiming an interview at George Washington University.
  11. I hope so. It will be a relief while waiting for other decisions to be announced. I found that to be nominated for that fellowship the department should have admitted or will admit the student. This fellowship will begin with the nomination of a student by the academic unit that has admitted the student, or will admit by the endorsement deadline.
  12. I just received an email saying that I have been nominated for a fellowship. Does that mean an acceptance? It doesn’t say acceptance in the email or on the portal ?
  13. How soonish? Should we expect them this week or next week?
  14. I am in the same position folks but one thing I learned from “3 Idiots” (the movie) is that you need to lie to your heart. You need to say “All izz well”
  15. Yeah I know but it is good to share and let some burden off you know? ?
  16. Are there any regrets folks? I am kinda regretting now not taking GRE again. Feel like 4.0 in AWA will really limit my chances for getting into a T10 or a T20 school ?
  17. Hey @Hamb I didn’t know about their strict editing policy. If that is the case, let’s leave this thread here until February and come back after we have the complete picture.
  18. Since I started the thread, I am assuming that I am supposed to go first. For now, I will just share my profile and the schools that I applied to. As we start getting the results, I will come back and edit it to share what I learned during this application cycle. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad Institution: Low-ranked private institution Major(s)/Minor(s): Political Science/ Stats and German Studies Undergrad GPA: 3.98 Type of Grad: N/A Grad GPA: N/A GRE: V:160 Q:168 AWA:4.0 Any Special Courses: Applied Statistical Methods, Probability Letters of Recommendation: All from tenured profs in my department. One from a professor that knows me very well and whom I RA'd for. One from a professor that I took two regular classes and did an independent study with and one from a professor who knows me since my freshman year. Research Experience: One quarter RA, one summer research project as a result of a grant, independent research for a quarter. Teaching Experience: None Subfield/Research Interests: Comparative/Authoritarianism Other: I am an international student from Turkey and I speak Turkish and German(intermediate). My writing sample was the research report that I wrote for the summer research grant. RESULTS: Acceptances($$ or no $$): Waitlists: Rejections: Pending: Harvard, Cornell, UT-Austin, UCLA, GWU, FSU, Duke Going to: LESSONS LEARNED: Ask as many people as possible for help and after the first round of their responses, eliminate the ones that really don't care about you. I sent my application materials to so many different people (over 10) and got very valuable feedback. I finalized my SOP after 8 drafts but some of the people I talked to gave ok to the second draft. My point is that ask people you trust and go over your application materials as many times as possible. I know it might be hard but don't go back to your writing sample after you submit it because there will always be some mistakes and at that point, there is nothing you can do about. So just relax and tell yourself that we are all humans and are bound to make mistakes. (This concludes my suggestions for now but it will surely continue) SOP: Crafted a classic SOP that mentioned my background, undergrad education, and my research interests. Tailored the last paragraph based on schools and faculty fit.
  19. Since most applications are in by now, I see it fit to start this thread for this application cycle. I saw some users using 2017-2018 Application Cycle thread to share their experiences but I believe that we should make our posts under an independent thread to provide clarity and coherence for future applicants. I benefitted a lot from the experience of previous users on this forum and I am sure so many of you did too. Therefore, I am starting this thread by just copy pasting @dagnabbit's introductory post from last year. Good luck to all future applicants. Previous threads: 2017, 2016 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, and 2010 PROFILE: Type of Undergrad Institution: Major(s)/Minor(s): Undergrad GPA: Type of Grad: Grad GPA: GRE: Any Special Courses: Letters of Recommendation: Research Experience: Teaching Experience: Subfield/Research Interests: Other: RESULTS: Acceptances($$ or no $$): Waitlists: Rejections: Pending: Going to: LESSONS LEARNED: SOP: Note: If you are uncomfortable revealing certain aspects of your file in order to maintain privacy, please do not let that stop you from posting the other parts! Anything is useful, and each cycle we have so many applicants who post in the main thread but leave before posting here - let's change that!
  20. Hey everyone! Do you know if the adcomms read all three letters starting with the one that came in first or the one that you listed on the top of your list? I am worried because my most important letter writer did not submit his letter yet and I want the adcomms to read that letter carefully.
  21. @phyanth actually I did not mean that my bad. I meant “the University of Texas” or “the University of Texas-Austin”?
  22. Maybe a dumb question but would you write UT-Austin or only UT in your SOP?
  23. @audre.bored I am also applying to study Comparative Politics. @deutsch1997bw I believe as long as you got 160 over on both sections, you should be fine. That’s why I only took it once and also not to give another $200 ?. Which schools are you applying to? I am thinking of Cornell, Yale, Duke, UT-Austin, and maybe some safety schools.
  24. Hey guys! Let’s keep this thread alive and also take some stress off by sharing how our applications are going. I have completed my SOP and taken GRE. I have written my Writing Sample but I need to revise it a couple of times until it is ready. I contacted with my letter writers and I hope they will write and send the letters before the due dates.I am still working on my CV but I don’t know what to put on that. If you have any recommendations, I will be happy to hear those. Other than that, I did not fully decide which scholls I should apply to. I have 12-15 schools in my mind but need to narrow it down to 9-10. So this is where I am at. How you guys doing so far? Did any of you submit any applications already?
