From my experience most admissions people who read LORs, mostly overlook general praise (e.g. s/he is one of my best students, I have been extremely impressed etc. etc.) Mediocre of even mean LORs are just too rare.
The best LORs have two main features:
1) Comparison superlatives (e.g. level of _____ far surpasses all students in my 20-40 year career as a professor)
2) Talking very specifically about your work and accomplishment
Good luck everyone this year. Last year I didn't get great financial offers so I declined everything and focused on work. Hopefully this year will go well.
So far Yale first round should come around the last week of January. Pretty scary...
Perhaps... but I called in the department today and they told me that. I wonder if they already made any offers, I feel like they did. So I am not expecting too much (... but hopefully I am wrong)
Hi tbone,
Yes thank you, it clarified some things. So I am presuming that all accepted students have been contacted.
Who knows I might have a chance at the waitlist... but the 1/2 funding is a big downer. Especially because I am applying for the M.F.A which means that I would continue to Ph.D anyways in Brandeis. Oh well, I'll wait and see...
Hi tbone,
First of all congratulations Brandeis is a very good school, that is why I have applied there as well. If you don't mind me asking, in what way did they contact you and when? Do you know anything about how many places are they funding or even accepting?
Cheers
