Hello there!
There are not so many people here but I still hope that may be you can give some useful general advice regarding PhD programs on African American art.
My biggest concern for now is my background. So I have a B.A. in Sociology, and now I’m finishing my M.A. in North American studies at the Freie Universität in Berlin. During my Master’s I focused on culture and visual studies, attended some courses in Art History, but I don’t have a solid degree in Art History. However, I worked in a museum of contemporary art and volunteered at some European biennials of contemporary art.
During my Master’s I did some research and wrote papers about African American art and photography, and I’m going to write my Master’s thesis on Kerry James Marshall. So at some point it looks consistent for me, but I worry that it is not enough for applying for PhD in Art History, because of the lack of a degree in Art History.
Though I found many combined programs, such as African American studies and Art History in Yale, or African American studies at Princeton, I can not understand what are my chances as a European student with such a background. I will be happy to get your opinion, whether I should try to apply for Art History or stay in the field of American studies.
Also, since I’ve never studies in the US, I’m curious if I can write directly to OPI, and if so, is there any better way to do that? I guess they receive so many emails from potential candidates, don’t want to look dumb and make a bad impression. If somebody can share you experience in PM, that would be cool.
I would love to speak to any of you. Thanks!
