  1. graduating from a 'top' program will certainly help on the back end to get a job and start paying off those loans...and may help with getting hooked up with shows and grants too, but in my opinion the most important reason to choose one program over another is because there is somebody on their faculty that you really believe you can learn from. that, and the work of current students should be clear indicators of what's going on there and whether or not it might be a good fit for you.
  2. from what i've heard, boston u has a good rep for traditional oil painting. if that's what you're into then it might be a good fit. anyhow, welcome to the states. good luck and allbest
  3. obviously gd and painting/mixed media are totally different deals, but how are you leaning at this point between cca and calarts?
  4. they are all pure art schools (not part of a large, wide-ranging university like ucla or yale) with solid reputations. hypothetically, if funding were not part of your decision (lol), and if you were to be accepted to all 4 programs (in painting), where would you go? in what order? and why? so far, i'm thinking: 1. risd 2. chicago 3. calarts 4. cca (i haven't gotten the letter yet one way or the other from calarts, have already been accepted at cca, and have interviewed at risd and saic and am waiting on their decision)

    UCLA?

finally got ms. cronin on the phone, was put on hold, endlessly, then it ended, and i was told that they never even received my application, and therefore i wasn't even considered. just as i feared. well, fuck.

    UCLA?

who's heard back from ucla? a current student there in the i.d. department told me that they've already made their final decisions for this year's applicants, but i haven't heard back anything from them by email or on their site--where it says simply that "no decision has been made on the status of your application". i've called the department a couple of times because at this point i'm not even sure if they got my whole application (you have to mail part of it in), but all i get is caron cronin's answering machine. so, if you've heard back, please tell me how you heard back? phone, email, regular post? and when? and to what program? i am applying in interdisciplinary studies.
  7. thanks. i already checked them out a couple of weeks ago, so no i won't be heading back for their open house. the program seems pretty cool, in the sense that people are down to earth and the bay area is great in terms of quality of life. --plus oakland is cheap for big live/work spaces and unfolding a little artist community in it's own right that might develop into something--who knows? the studios at cca are tiny though, and you don't get a door, just a curtain. the fact that anybody can just pull your little curtain back and walk in on you at any time could i think drive me nuts in a hurry. are you heading to cca's open house? what department would you be in? i'm still waiting to hear from ucla and calarts. calarts does interviews (but not for me...) and so i'm assuming that's a rejection. ucla though, i don't know. some people on here have said that they've already been rejected, but i haven't heard anybody say they've been accepted. kind of weird. i've heard its a black hole though, in the sense that nobody gets in that doesn't already know they're going to get in before they even apply...
  8. @alizarin i did a risd phone interview yesterday morning early. we tried the skype thing but it didn't work out so well and wound up doing it on speakerphone. there were three profs from the painting department, and it went pretty well. it was the most human interview i've done so far anyways, in the sense that i never felt like they were trying to corner me or get me off balance. overall i'd say that the line of questioning was pretty much the same as for the other schools, but the tone was warmer.
  9. How did you hear? I haven't heard a peep from them since I sent in my app by mail...starting to wonder if they never even got it.

    interviews

@mnchick i did the saic interview on the phone, but it was just with one prof. a lot of the same questions come up all around. once you've done one interview, the rest aren't so much different: "why are you applying to our program? what contemporary artists are you into and why? what would you bring to the program? tell us about the conceptual underpinnings of your work? etc.
  11. i didn't get a letter. i called the admissions department and asked. they patched me through to dwayne moser who told me i wasn't being offered a spot. he was pretty nice about it though, and encouraging. so that was ok. allbest and good luck.
  12. good for you. what areas/departments are you applying to?
  13. Reply some schools don't interview. some schools interview some people that they feel they need to talk to, and some schools, like yale, want to talk to 70 people. they gave me an early interview. that doesn't mean i'm getting accepted or anything, it just means they granted me an early interview because i was already on their interview list and i was in new york at the time (close enough to go up and talk). the reason they granted this exception was because at the end of the month of february i had to go to l.a. copy and pasted below. i was standing outside the gate trying to get in for my interview but there was no number for them on the blue security box there... Patricia A DeChiara to me show details Feb 22 We are expecting to see you now. Your interview is in 15 minutes?? interviews

i was granted an early interview at yale a couple of weeks ago because i happened to be passing through town anyways on my way west. it was pretty intense and all i can say is you might as well just stick to being yourself because they are probably going to try to throw you off. first it was an interview with two faculty members, reed and messer. and then a second interview with two current mfa painting students. and then a long tour with another student. they also said that they had had over 600 applicants in painting, that they were going to interview about 70, and accept about 20. that is: they accept 20 people, for 20 spots. they year before they accepted 21 people, and all 21 came! --the year before that, they accepted 24, and 23 came--one was stolen by columbia. that's it. good luck everybody.
  15. i think the wait is killing all of us... i applied to a lot of the same schools, risd, saic, and ucla in common. i was rejected by usc already, and accepted at cca. beyond that i interviewed at yale, risd, and saic (painting), though haven't heard a final word from any of them. i'm maybe most on the edge of my seat about ucla though and haven't heard a thing, though i've heard that they've already made their decisions... looking forward to hearing from anyone about the california schools. good luck everybody.
  16. hello, i'm new here. i've been accepted to cca in painting, though haven't heard anything about funding... i've also done interviews with yale, risd, and saic, though no final decisions yet. i also have applied to ucla and calarts, but haven't heard a peep. no interview, but no rejections either--so it feels weird, as it seems as though some people have already been rejected at those schools. how did you hear that calarts wasn't going to take you?
  17. alrighty, so say you've already been accepted by yale, ucla, risd, saic, calarts and cca, where do you go? and why? --this is for painting, interdisciplinary studies, and/or general fine arts. (assuming the scholarship question is not the determining factor for the moment) i'm thinking, in this order: yale ucla risd calarts saic cca
