  1. I'll likely be attending U Chicago for my MPP (Harris) next fall. Assuming that I can incorporate Metra into my travels, how crazy is it to live in a north/northwestern neighborhood like Lakeview, Logan Square, or Wicker Park while studying at U Chicago? I'm coming to Chicago from NYC and I really found that Hyde Park really lacks the atmosphere I've become accustomed to over the past 6-7 years in NYC. Even Morningside Heights where I spent 4 years as an undergrad at Columbia feels more vibrant/urban than Hyde Park.

@Policy.Planner.NYC, this might be a late response but I was speaking to an admissions person from the MSCAPP programme (where I applied) and mentioned that I received substantial scholarship offers from other schools. He said that it would only be beneficial if I used those offers to negotiate for funding (I did not get any funding from Chicago). This may only be specific to the MSCAPP programme at Harris, but wanted to share in case others were wondering. He did say, though, that it would be unlikely that I would get anything more than half tuition even if I did negotiate.

Thanks - I already was offered funding from Chicago for the MPP but was hoping to negotiate upward. They told me that there’s an appeal form that will go out in March (at least for people already receiving a scholarship). I’m waiting on offers from Berkeley and NYU as well but am pretty set on Chicago so I will likely just use those offers to negotiate.

  3. Is anyone trying to negotiate scholarships with them? Any luck? I was accepted to GWU for a JD as well and was offered a substantial scholarship so I was planning on using that as leverage for now. I won’t have any other offers for MPP/MUP programs until Feb/March when NYU Wagner comes back.

I was waitlisted for Harris's MPP program yesterday and since it's one of my top choices I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for anything I can do to improve my chances of getting off the waitlist. I'm taking the GRE again next month to hopefully boost my quant score (currently it's 153 and I'm aiming for around a 158) and I'm taking an online intro micro course spring semester (have not previously taken one). Is there anything else worth doing or looking into between now and May? Should I personally reach out to the admissions office expressing my interest? Thanks in advance!

Hmmm... In my experience the admissions people have been quite helpful and friendly so it's definitely worth a shot. As for your GRE quant, I think they say somewhere on their website that they like quant scores above the 75th percentile which would be right around 160. So definitely aim as high as possible! I was admitted w/funding with a 164 but that's only one data point. You should search the results on GradCafe to get a better picture of what kinds of scores admitted students typically have. I think they definitely do admit students with less than 160 but it looks like they generally have pretty high GPAs and strong softs plus solid verbal GRE scores around the 90th percentile. Where else are you applying?

Congrats on your admission results. I think you can definitely argue it for yourself. However, I am not sure if Harris is significantly less competitive than law schools . I apply to both Harris(MSCAPP)and GWU law too. I am surprised to find out that Harris put me to Round one for their MPP program considering my quantative background. In contrast, it is relatively safe to get a spot at GWU with some scholarship once your LSAT score is higher than 165.  Law schools in D.C  are really overpriced and my rent was never below 12 hundred while living there. So the cost of attendance is still probably pretty high even after factoring in the scholarship and that may make it harder for you to negotiate with Harris. Not sure what your career objective is but I think you may be better off if you go along with law school. Good luck!

Oh wow. Perhaps these programs are becoming much more competitive than they once were - especially the quant-heavy programs like Harris. I did notice that they reported a 168% increase in EA apps, but I'm not sure what to make of it. Are they simply admitting more people to grow the class size? Or is it now much more difficult to gain admission?

I'm in! but no emails, just that I can check it in the little envelope in the application system.

where to check the scholarship awards? I haven't seen any mention of it in the Congratulations email; does this mean I've got none?

You need to scroll down to the bottom of the page with the acceptance letter and see if there's a link to scholarship documents on the bottom left side. If you got a scholarship, there should be a link to a second letter.

Did you receive any acceptances/scholarships from other MPP/MPA programs? I ask because I am unsure if Harris will consider matching the scholarship that you were offered from GW Law (as it's a completely different type of professional school).

I think that's part of my dilemma. I will have to wait until Feb/March to hear back from other programs as Harris is the only program I applied to with an EA option. I felt like they might consider the offer since law school admissions are generally much more competitive than MPP/MPA programs. It's unfortunate because I would be ready to commit with just a little tiny bit more $.

Does anyone have any tips, more broadly about how to approach the ask (regardless of whether I try now or in Feb/March)?

  8. My case: I was recently admitted to U Chicago Harris for the MPP with a moderately sized scholarship. I was also admitted to GW Law for a JD with a very large (six figure) scholarship. However, I feel that I do not want to actually practice law, but work in policy which is possible with either the JD or MPP. That said, I feel the the Harris MPP is ultimately a better fit for me as an individual. How does one go about negotiating with Harris to improve my scholarship? For what it's worth, I would absolutely commit to Harris with a slight bump in funding. It is by far my first choice program.

Accepted with a bit of $. Call about half an hour ago. Decisions will be officially uploaded for admits over the weekend. Good luck!

Congrats! I think mine specifically said tomorrow evening for decisions and the detailed scholarship letters will come over the weekend. My call gave me the impression that they are only calling scholarship/fellowship recipients.

**edit: by tomorrow evening I mean this evening as my call came yesterday afternoon.

I haven't totally lost hope yet, but hope is definitely fading...

The person who was accepted posted their stats and they were not crazy. 4 years work w/ 3.48 GPA and mid 150s on the GRE. Personally that gives me hope that applicant pool isn’t all 3.9s with 167-170 quant scores.

Has anyone heard anything yet? The wait is killing me. I checked the application portal and there is a "decision documents" icon, but when I click on it, it says there is nothing to report.

This appeared for me yesterday in the afternoon. Still nothing to report!

You mean they will call admits tomorrow? Trembling waiting...

I saw that a couple people in the results section last year reported being accepted via phone the day before decisions were released formally.

Does anyone know the number of people applying/admitted/admit rate for EA at SIPA or Harris? Even getting current overall admissions percentages is more difficult than I thought it would be...

As far as I can tell, admission rates are completely opaque. My guess is that most of these programs aren’t as selective as the schools would like you to believe.

  14. The waiting is killing me! 12/22 is so close yet so far!

Anyway, I’m in Chicago for the weekend on unrelated business so I guess I should go check out Hyde Park when I have some free time. I reached out the admissions staffer I was in touch with and she gave me some helpful recommendations for my visit.

Hopefully I actually end up coming to Chicago next fall!

I just wrote to them saying I was an MPP applicant, and they sent me a form link. I think I got mine due to financial need. Fair warning: some schools (SIPA, SAIS, Duke), do not have need based waivers. Others (HKS, Harris) you need to write to admissions and maybe wait a few/days weeks for approval depending on when you apply. Not every school that has need-based waivers will advertise it on the website.

Interesting. I definitely don't qualify for anything need-based. I didn't ask at Harris, the admissions staffer just offered to waive my fee without prompting. Do you think other schools might offer a non-need-based fee waiver upon request?

Did anyone else get a holiday card from the admissions office at Harris? I got one in the mail the other day and the small size of the envelope freaked me out a bit (assuming it was a reject letter, of course) until I opened it and saw what was inside. Ultimately, I thought it was a pretty strange gesture.

  16. Out of curiosity, did anyone else get a fee waiver to Harris? I was discussing my app with an admissions staffer over email and she eventually offered me what seemed to be a merit-based fee waiver - which I gladly accepted!

took the LSAT and was at one time considering law school and it seemed like common practice in that world, but I have never seen any evidence of fee waivers for MPP programs other than the need-based ones you can apply for.
