  1. Hope dwindling for good news out of UCSD, UCR, or Syracuse. With a couple of exceptions, the remaining unknowns are basically fallbacks that I am inclined to reject. Psychologically readying myself to crush it next year. Heartfelt congratulations to the UCSD admits! And mad props to returning applicants getting good news.
  2. Rejected from Georgetown. Learned a lot from trying to skate by with my GRE scores from 2 years ago. On that basis alone Georgetown was not willing to waive my application fee (a faculty member there told me high GRE scores indicate a high chance of success for an applicant). And from UChicago's Phil webpage: "The three parts of the GRE examination supposedly test for verbal, quantative, and analytical reasoning skills. Be that as it may, the one ability which all three of these tests certainly do measure is your ability to take such tests..." Takeaway: some depts, including high-rated departments, will 1) interpret high scores positively as your ability to outsmart the test; and/or 2) be more inclined to see a high scorer as a potentially successful applicant. If my expected shutout obtains then that will be the first thing that gets fixed. IME this round, 316/4.5 doesn't help and probably hurts you. 340/6.0 can only and probably will help.
  3. ha what a dummy. Any admits planning on declining Baylor? Congrats UCSD admits!
  4. Anyone on Baylor's waitlist planning on declining?
  5. where did y'all go? I applied this year and am waiting for a response. MA philosophy. Sorry to wake the dead and I hope I'm not right in a literals sense about that.
  6. Anyone claiming the acceptance at UC Riverside? Well done and congratulations! I can feel your boundless excitement, stranger. My top choice too. Hoping against hope!
  7. Maybe you buy this, or not, but Baylor tries to explain away the PGR non-ranking on their website: "While our young program is not yet ready to be officially evaluated by the Philosophical Gourmet Report, the latest edition of the report recommends us for consideration in the areas of Philosophy of Religion, Epistemology, Philosophical Logic and Philosophy of Action." is 16 years (12 as of the date of that writing) really that young? A&M's is younger (I think) and last I checked they were at #50. But their 73% permanent placement rate is impressive.
  8. Thanks Pythian, and congrats on the success you're having this round. I suspect relentless revisions of the sample is the single factor to emphasize (advice I lazily ignored). Should the need arise I will have an MA thesis to bring to the table next time. Still better to get in down the road with one of my <3's than to settle for a BC this year.
  9. That's one way to look at it. Being 0/8 so far this season I look at this potential failure as an opportunity to hone in on a few departments and get deeply familiar with the work of some people I'd be thrilled to study with... read their books and get involved with the convo etc. I don't think it could hurt to communicate an interest in studying to a potential advisor. That way they'll at least know who you are when you bring their name up in your statement of purpose the next time. My sense is to get into a department that way on the 2nd or 3rd try would be ideal compared to accepting a 1st round offer from a dept that inspires lukewarm sentiments.
  10. No word from LUC or Fordham here either. I seem to have jumped out ahead in the early runnings. 0 for 5 plus a wait. Step it up y'all.
  11. If obtaining solid information about where we are NOT going to be studying in 2018 is supposed to supply comfort, you may all call me King of the Panopticon from now on.
  12. Congratulations! When did you hear from TAMU?
  13. Whoever posted the acceptance to Brown as their first PhD acceptance in 3 seasons, you're my hero. Congratulations, but beware: I'm on the quick track to outperform your current record of 1/1/24. In all seriousness, I'm super thrilled for you. Nicely done.
  14. I wouldn't worry about that. I'm 36 and think they're making the right decisions based on my credentials and compatibility with the programs so far. If your sample is stellar you'll get their attention, so that'll be my focus if I don't get the result I want this first try. You are an inspiration. Congratulations! I'm very excited for you. Have seen a couple of others posting results or in the forum who helped me to strengthen my resolve to roll through this however many times I have to. Thank you and I wish you success and fulfillment in life.
  15. Sorry to hear that. They got our business, didn't they? I'm at 3 too, with the urge to cry tempered by a waitlist. I hope the next news is good news for you.
  16. If I was you I'd take it as a good sign. With the slew of slaps they just handed down I'd say your app is getting some serious consideration. I hope you get a happy surprise soon. Good luck!
  17. If it helps your prediction, I saw the rejections and predicted I'd have news and I did (see above rejection gripe).
  18. Struck down by Brown's hand of doom. (same hand that also writes lame stock rejection letters from the grad school) 0/3 plus a wait. May your seeds find fertile fields!
  19. no idea but thx for pointing that out. Only half as puckered now as I was before.
  20. Applied, no word on anything yet, no info at the portal.
  21. Generic slap-down from Emory. Eh, bad fit.. not sure why I tried that. Waitlisted at Baylor... complicating my assumption that everyone hates my app. Decision expected by end of March. Still 9 or 10 depts I'm pretty excited to hear from, potential 'yes' reactions varying from Obama NOT BAD to cartwheels. Woot! Way to go, kretschmar! That's awesome. Here's to even more options opening up for you. Derrida: Same. It was a huge stretch for me too. Glad they found their matches and taught me something also. FWIW I have had schools refund the app fee after I showed them my FAFSA report. I hope you find a solid match. PhiloStorian: Emory was a fallback and I'm not upset about it either. Congrats on your acceptance to UW and I hope your options open up even more. Yea, it sucks to get rejected from somewhere you actually hope to get in at. I'm sorry to hear that. I don't know if this is your first app season but I saw someone here getting accepted to good schools and this is their third time around. That gave me hope and inspiration to learn from this even in the worst case. Wanna buy them a beer whoever they are. Best of wishes to you! I'm sorry to hear that. I felt the same when I got my Chicago rejection. It still hurts. I'm glad you have a good match open to you, so congratulations on that and may further results be in your favor.
  22. Good point. Getting my first rejection initiates the reality that I'll have to get used to a lot of it during the course of applications, advanced study, and beyond.
