I have a friend there for painting undergrad and he's been unhappy, but I'm not sure WHY.  He was trying to get me to apply to their photo MFA because he thought the master's cohort work he had seen was a bunch of super lame baloney and he figured I'd get in.  That really might be the only beef as far as I know, and since you say you like the alumni work then maybe it's irrelevant.

SAIC has had something bigger going on but I also don't know EXACTLY what it is.  We recently had an artist talk with SAIC faculty and someone in the audience ripped into her about the school and how they're treating a lot of "politically correct" progressive discourse.  She wasn't very articulate, but what I could put together was that they had a highly white-feminism/all lives matter approach to political artwork.  This may be worth investigating in alumni/current students.  Some other whispers I've heard from my advisors and professors is that SAIC "famously" underpays their faculty (this comes with an eyebrow-raise when you look at their tuition costs).  I think there is more, but I haven't kept up because they're not really on "my list."

Thank you!  I wish I could have learnt those informations earlier before I applied. An open academic atmosphere is really important. I don't have a particular interest in political themes, although I love to explore a little bit, but I don't feel the school should put any emphasis on it. I think I will go to CalArts. :)

I am not expressing an opinion or providing advice one way or the other -- those are both overall great schools and I don't know much about their photo programs -- but for background information, that comment about SAIC and "political correctness" is possibly in reference to this from last summer:

Thank you Eric. I just carefully read through this article. After learning more about SAIC, I feel it might not be a right place for me.

maybe think about what kind of work you want to make during grad school

and what faculty do you wanna work with?

Thank you. I love the works by calarts faculty and students much better. But I love the city of Chicago and feel there are more subjects and elements for shooting... so it is really had to compare them.. I post to see if others have more thoughts on their photo programs..

I have definitely heard mumblings of discontent at both of them, so if I were you I'd try to nail down what the gossip is, but that's just me.

thank you. I actually want to hear what’s negative about CalArts, there is really not much information about its photo program.

  4. Hi guys,

Got 80% tuition-covered scholarship from SAIC and had already decided to go there..

but this morning, CalArts offered a full prize scholarship.

I feel like in a struggle to choose any one..

Any suggestions on their photo programs?

    Many thanks!

Also I saw some people talking about a studio tour? I didn't hear anything about that, maybe not a photo thing?

No, not a photo tour, but a painting studio tour which we can also participate. And I’m looking at all these restaurants or cafes around. seems a lot of choices.

Photo interview Wasn't too bad, no surprise questions, other than who do you think is making work about my subject matter (family) and getting it wrong? Was so prepared to talk about people I am drawing from that that thew me for a moment it did feel like a conversation where once we got through the obvious "why grad school what's your deal" sort of stuff, like their questions were just responses to things I said and not off a list

Congrats that you done with the interview. I was just now outside the photography studio for about one second and I guess they were interview someone, might be you.:)

and guess will see you guys at the critique session!

I was offered a scholarship and it seemed as though there could possibly be more assistance yet to come.

Congrats!!! I got in as well, but I’m trying not to get too ahead of myself until the funding info comes, because that’s going to determine A lot. Did they tell how much it was for? I didn’t really get any numbers during my call.

Congratulations on you both! I just got in the program of SAIC photo too and I got a scholarship of 20% reduction in tuition.. It is actually not enough to cover my financial problem.. I was a little worried. It will be great if you can share some info on your scholarships. (Sorry if this quetion is personal and just ignore it )

And I was a little confused about the informations on the website. Some said that there is a full-tuition-covered scholarship for one student in each department. I am not sure if this is true.

Just booked an Airbnb for $57 and it is a 25 min. walk to campus. Saw some cheaper listings, but were much further from the university. Didn't want to add an uber or lyft to the price tag. Trying to save as much as possible.

Thanks for the info. Airbnb is a good choice. I will look it up.

Standing in solidarity with all of the folks who've been invited to interview at Yale but finding it difficult to afford the trip. You are not alone!

I heard that the cheapest hotel nearby campus will be 100+ bucks per day

Thank you! And It's more like video documentation for some of the larger newer sculptural paintings since I'm unable to bring them in person.

That's a good idea. Your things got very strong part of materiality. I love your work and your statement in your website, and your poetry, too. Wish you good luck with Yale!

Yale mentions nothing in regards to the "kinds" of work one should bring in the letter. Folks who interviewed at Yale before what did you bring or see others bring? Did anyone hear anything from Yale about interview work expectation for painting during the open house? I'm personally thinking about what's going to be economically feasible, so smaller works nothing over 30 inches that can't be rolled. Majority of what I'll be bringing will be a surprise and didn't include in my application. Hoping they'll have a projector in the room to project a few videos.

I really love your paintings! And I was curious about your video works, it is hard to imagine for me. I just hope you can show some videos in your website, too.
