People at HGSE sometimes call their EdD students "PhD students", because those degrees are not really different, at least at Harvard.
This might be related also.
"Broad" might mean no concentration, no expertise.
I do not know how having no expertise can be more advantageous in the market.
It's always better to have a concentration field when you get a 'graduate' degree.
You didn't read the profiles very carefully. Some of them are listed as current professors.
