Re: WLU MSW online for Jan 2019

Found out yesterday that my app is a Reject as well. And it's my birthday tomorrow! ? LOL.

A lot of other schools provide a template letter for their reasoning.  Other than "we've had a lot of applicants", no other info given.  I've contacted the university for feedback. I'll post when I hear.

Super frustrating because I had applied for several Masters programs (Counseling & Rehabilitation Sciences), several years in a row. Even applied for an accelerated RN program at UBC!  Rejected.  Spent >$4K on application fees and upgrading courses.  Not to mention the time spent!

I figured that part of my life was done.  Then in February, a new supervisor walked into my life (surprised that I wasn't already a SW) & got me all hyped up! & here we are.  I honestly thought this time would be different.  I'll apply once more, after receiving feedback.

Good luck to everyone - including those who already received a Reject.

    My background:

-Undergrad Psych & Bio with a non-competitive B- average.  (Also took Organic Chem & Calculus which have a dismal 50% pass rate. But course averages won't likely be taken into account.)

-since 2001, worked in frontline mental health at safe houses, was outreach case manager to folks in the DTES, was in outpatient psych as psychometric diagnostician.  Extremely stressful times with burnout, secondary trauma and job displacements.  (Likely the fact that I still obtained permanent positions in the field, with no breaks in my employment records, will not be taken into account.)

    - research experience in pain, anxiety, depression, forensics

    - recently joined a Community of Practice.  And wish me luck as I've applied to be a Board member of a local MH mag.

It sounds like you have a TON of relevant experience in SW. I was told you needed a B average to apply (in last 10 courses). Did you have that? If not you could do a few online classes through Athabaska Un to boost your GPA and apply again. From what i have seen it seems like experience is huge to get accepted into this program. UVIC has a good online bachelors in SW. It isn't much longer than a Masters? I am still trying to figure out a back up plan.

  2. I have known a few people who have done the Masters of Counc at Yorkville and had a good experience. I know it's easier to get into since it is private and more experience. I don't think it mattets where you get your education as long as you get registered afterwards. You will gain your best skills on your job practicums working under another counsellor. Best of luck to you all.

I was waitlisted for september MSW online at Laurier and surprised to see no one has been waitlisted as of yet. Hopefully, some good news is still to come for those who are waiting.

    Hi everyone,

New to this... I want to apply for the online MSW May 2019 start. How exactly do they calculate averages?

I know it's the last 10 courses... I've done 6 upgrades through athabasca - so do they just look at my most recent 4 as per my undergrad transcript? Or do they take an average of my final year and use that 4 times. If that makes sense...

    Thanks in advance :)

I would call and speak to one of the advisors about this. They will be best to answer these types of questions accurately.

I still haven’t heard anything either way from Laurier. Is anyone else still waiting?

Rejections and waitlists went out first. I totally understand your stress right now, but you will most likely recieve an offer. They are probably still sending them out. Hang in there ! Good news will be coming soon ?

Thanks for the positive outlook! :)  wishing you lots of luck as well.  Did they give you a time line for getting off the wait list?  That’s just more waiting for you now. How stressful!!

Aug 31st (i believe) . Then the waitlist is closed.

I applied to the January 2019 intake for the online part-time program. Starting to worry now I won’t get in, especially if it’s based on experience.  I’ve been an LPN for 11 years and have over 12,000 hours in the field, but it’s not necessarily social work stuff I’m doing.  Looks like I’m going to have to start looking at a backup plan.

It all depends on who is in your applicant pool. How many spots are they offering for that cohort? Someone wrote 40? Not sure if that's true. I was told September was going to be around 80, but not sure if that was actually the case.

Keep staying positive!!! You have experience and it is more related to SW than you think. Most people with non BSW degrees won't have social work experience. Any human service experience will be counted. I think you have a great chance. I think they said the average person who is accepted has over an 80%average and 7/8 years experience. Wishing you luck!!!

I think so too - lack of experience is the reason. However, as you mentioned it is not easy to get experience without being in the feeld...

Well, hope we'll finally get in! Before we are 80y/o ?

Did you apply for the non BSW route? What about volunterring somewhere. That usually leads to emploment.  I work in Mental Health and i have seen that alot. We usually hire the volunteers that do well.

I just got rejected from Wilfrid Laurier’s part time online MSW program for September :(

I am sorry. You are the second person who has told me this today. What letter is your last name? ????

This is very dissapointing to hear. Do they give explanations to why you wern't accepted? I am so nervous now. I don't want to look at the e-mail when it comes in.

    Hi Noelle1,

I talked to someone today briefly through e-mail - they said they are still reviewing applications and we will "most likely" hear in July. No more specific time frame than that. I am frustrated with the stress of waiting, but it very much seems like a situation where when they are done it goes out quickly - they are just not done yet. I wish they would update us ongoingly in the process! Hope this helps.

Thank you! Now i can stop obsessively checking my Loris account ?. I hope we hear soon. I had a feeling it was delayed again.

I just got an email this morning from Dilyara at Laurier requesting an interview from me for the Jan 2019 intake. Did anyone else get this email?? The email ends with "I will be able to answer any questions you might have about the program to make sure that Wilfrid Laurier is a great fit for you."

Sounds like good news I hope, fingers crossed!!

Prior to my application being submitted i had a phone interview with, Dilyara. It was to see if "i was a good fit". This was before she sent me the application checklist. I applied begining of April. I wonder if the admissions team listens to the phone interviews prior to making a decision. Most grad schools do in person interviews.

After my phone interview she said i could apply to the program as my grades met their requirements. I thought everyone had to do this?

anyone hear back from Lauirer yet? part-time/ online September intake? The stress is real! I was also told that the emails would be sent out the beginning of June-mid June.

    Good luck everyone!

I am waiting for September intake too! I was told via e-mail that they are still reviewing applications and we will hear back mid to end of June. I was originally told begining to mid June. Yes, so stessful.  I just hope it doesn't take eveb longet than June. I need time to prepare if accepted and figure out how im paying for it .

    Good Luck!

How did you find out the number of applicants? I was told that the class size for Jan 2019 would be about 40 students. Thanks!

My advisor at Laurier informed me of this. That is for online/part-time for the non BSW route. If you are applying for the online program, maybe that intake(January) is smaller? They may increase the nunbers in the coming months. Good luck!!!

You never know but for the first cohort there was over 150 applicants. Glad to see they are accepting more. I have faith in you all!!

There are 80 spots and 290 applicants for September intake. Thank you for your positive vibes. In your cohort, did everyone have similar credentials? Did most have work experience? Or high grades? Just curious to what they put the most emphasis on (grades, work experience, certain degrees?)

I feel like the may entry was told that if they did not got accepted they would be considered for septemeber but i somehow feel that isnt true just because any other school if you are denied you have to reapply. For our may cohort there is about 45 students so i am not sure but maybe the acceptance has gone up.to 80?

Yes, they are accepting 80 for September. Maybe, they will accept people off the waitlists into the next start if they don't have enough qualified candidates? Just a thought.
