  1. Hello! I'm currently a first year in the program, at U Albany if you have any questions, just let me know and I'd be happy to share my experiences :)
  2. Are you applying for Fall? Because if so the deadline has passed. i believe the deadline was June 1st. I went to a info session where they explained June 1st was the cut off date. You can always apply for the Spring Semester. They are definitely done taking applications this term. That will then give you time to work on your personal statement and letters of recommendations. Hunter hovers around a 30-40 % acceptance rate, you also have to go through a rigorous interview process if your invited to the interview (not everyone is). After the interview is over they notify you of your status in their program. Hunter gets the most applications of all the NYC social work schools because of the affordability, prestige and rigorous program. But its also a very large program. if you apply to other schools in the city you will have a much easier time getting in. Hunter is one of the most challenging programs to get into in the country. Columbia, Fordham, Yeshiva, NYU, Adelphi all have much higher acceptance rates. Lehman and CSI are also both harder to get into. I didn't choose to go to Hunter but if I had to do the application process all over again I would really make sure that essay is up to snuff and get good letters of recommendation. Relevant work experience is also a big factor. So I would try to find experience relevant to the field before starting in the spring. And I cannot stress this enough, always, always, have a back up plan. Don't go into grad applications and only apply to Hunter, because you risk not getting in. (A lot of people don't get into Hunter). Off the top of my head I'd recommended applying to Lehman's program, Stony Brook and Fordham if you plan to stay downstate.
  3. I recently graduated from Stony Brook University in Long Island, the campus is only really walkable if you live close by, otherwise you have to have a car or Bike but I really wouldn't recommended biking. But if you commute from NYC or other parts of Long Island you can take the train (very long though). Their is always parking in South P on the campus. The actual area around the school is really sucky but luckily the train stops right on campus, and we used to have a commuter bus to the city, plus the ferry to Connecticut is close by. I'm attending graduate school up in Albany, New York in the fall. Arguably I think the transit in Albany is second after NYC (where I currently Live). I have heard you have to have a car in Buffalo even though they have a train line which doesn't really go anywhere (buses don't either apparently). Especially in Albany the transit is very accessible and free with a SUNY Albany ID. Getting to other cities may take awhile in the capitol region but certain bus lines even go up to Saratoga Springs which is like an hour away. The transit just got an award in 2017 for best regional transit system in the U.S. and has been making improvements to the system, even though albany is smaller compared to other upstate cities their seems to be more investment and care into it. Biking seems to be easier here especially in Albany! I couldn't imagine being in Binghamton without a car, apparently it also rains a lot in binghampton so theirs that also. Buffalo may be the hardest because of the winter weather and higher crime rates.
  4. This article that came out earlier this year helped a ton in deciding what program to attend for my MSW. It ranks 75 doctoral programs by h index, scholarly output, faculty productivity and publications. If i was you I'd go by this list as it is a lot more accurate since US News & World Report rankings are very very problematic. This method has proven to be the more accurate and concise for rankings and really weeds out the programs that really shouldn't be that well ranked! Programs that are PH D are going to be more research focused while D.S.W. degrees are more profession oriented I believe. The rankings are by the works cited https://www.researchgate.net/publication/321981315_Comparing_reputation_versus_H-index_rankings_of_doctoral_programs I will chime in and say i think it still does help to go to a school with a heavy research focus, my school seems to really work with graduate students at the MSW level and this was something I really didn't see when visiting other schools and talking to current and former students. And I think it helps my school has smaller class sizes. I do plan on going back for my PH D. Just not sure if I want to go back at my current school or not. And my school dropped ranks on the recent US News Report but is still going strong at research. I do not think its worth the money to go to a out of state school. And to be honest, out of all the NYC area schools I have heard the worse things overall about NYU. So just be careful if you decide to go their I currently live in NYC and i am going out of the city because their are way too many MSW programs in the NYC area that oftentimes desirable field placements are harder to come by. FYI it oftentimes doesn't matter where you go for your MSW in social work. It is one of those fields where the name of the school won't really benefit you in most circumstances, UNLESS you want to go in academia and pursue doctoral level work, which in that case you definitely need to make sure you go to a program that is recognizable in academic circles and has a reputation for being research driven.
  5. I went to the info session a couple weeks ago, and didn't even have to explain my case, I just mentioned that I didn't get into Hunter and Wanted to Transfer in from Columbia most likely. the admissions representative seemed shocked I got into Columbia but not Hunter and most of the other schools i applied to with the exception of Binghamton and NYU (although Hunter is much more selective then Columbia so not sure why they acted so shocked, Hunter usually maintains a selectivity rate in the 30 % range and columbia's acceptance rate is well over 70 %). I also mentioned that Hunter was my top choice and in terms of cost was the best route for me in terms of affordability. I also mentioned my passion for the program and my desire to stay in NYC to do my social work education. The director of admissions seemed very willing to work with me and actually proposed looking at my application again. I didn't even have to plead my case or ask for an appeal. So I am hoping that I get offered an interview as their last interview I think is sometime in June. So basically my application was put in a "waiting period" for several weeks and then I wasn't offered an interview, which was a major bummer for me. So I am hoping this time around they want to interview me so that I can hopefully ace the interview and get admitted. I just thought with my credentials I would at least be offered an interview. If not I am more then happy going to Albany as it is my top choice but also i am dreading moving again as I have moved around so much! Apparently its very difficult to transfer into Hunter as they only accept like 9 credits I think and then you have to re-do your field placement, which just sounds rough! So I would have to transfer in Spring 2018 ? Hunter actually isn't my top choice anymore, but i think in terms of making it easier for myself and staying in the city and especially with in state tuition I should attend if i get in! Hunter is actually a bit cheaper then the SUNY schools also! I declined Columbia's offer today though and I feel like a huge weight is lifted off of my shoulders! ? as I was mainly holding out until I could confirm that SUNY Albany was giving me a in state tuition rate (CUNY/SUNY schools have different policies on these matters and SUNY schools weigh the financial dependency/independency portion a lot more heavily then CUNY schools, i've been considered out of state/in-state at some SUNY schools before and in state at CUNY schools)
  6. I do not think their is a facebook group ? Still waiting on my application status, my application is being re-considered for admission so I am hoping for the best. I went to a info session the other week and was pretty impressed with how the event went. Was surprised they were still accepting applications. I think May 25th was the final submission date for the actual application (supplemental materials due later on I believe). Kinda wish I did my application later now but oh well! Other offers on the table are Columbia University and University At Albany-SUNY. I declined University at Buffalo-SUNY, Binghamton University-SUNY, NYU & Fordham University Already. Leaning more towards going to Albany or Hunter for my MSW. Although Columbia offered me a substantial scholarship!
  7. No not that is visibly evident on their website or on the application page. Thats exactly what they did is that they put me on the priority of the list, at Hunter they have a initial facilitator/reviewer look over the applications and if they can't make a decision it gets sent to someone higher up. And I was pretty explicit about the other offers on the table. And i think I made it unclear but i am attending the information session as a prospective transfer student, I wouldn't be pleading my case at the info session. But if what you said is true, I am best to leave it be and move on. I don't think its appropriate to even bring up the admissions decision today let alone try to meet with a admissions representative
  8. Hi all, At his point I am pretty positive I am going to attend University At Albany-SUNY for my MSW in the fall. The program and faculty's research aligns very heavily with my interests. However, I live in the city and got rejected from Hunter College, which was one of my top schools. Does anyone recommended appealing the admissions decision? As much as I love Albany's Program, moving out of NYC (I live in Queens) has been a difficult decision. And going to admitted student day at Columbia on Friday I met quite a few people who got accepted to Hunter but probably aren't going to attend. Hunter is the only public school that is affordable in the city and I just really wanted to go their to make my life easier. I am not going to pay for Columbia's program and will reject their offer once my financial aid appeal comes back. I don't think the program is worth the ticket price. Otherwise I am fine going to Albany I just wondered other people's thoughts on this and if other people have done it before!
  9. I went to Stony Brook University for Undergraduate, I had several issues with the school itself not my major program (I did women, gender & sexuality studies) that made me not want to go back their. Although my friend who is doing the MSW now seems to enjoy it. Their program is a bit odd, they have a campus in manhattan but require students to take courses on both campuses. If you live in Long Island it would be more accessible. But compared to SUNY Albany and SUNY Buffalo the program is not as well ranked. I believe Stony Brook does a 4 day a week program. I was a bit perplexed to find out that all the SUNY schools do a 4 day program as opposed to a 5 day program (Hunter and Columbia) do both. So having a job may be more feasible if you go to Stony Brook. (Around 900 field hours versus 1200 field hours for Hunter, Columbia, Fordham, NYU) I wanted to go to a social work school in a urban environment and felt that being placed for field on Long Island would be challenging and risky without a car (I commuted to Stony Brook from NYC via train my last two years going their). The social work program is also on the east campus which houses the hospital. So opportunities for clinical areas may be more easier their. although parking is a nightmare their and not sure if you would be able to park on east campus! Congrats on the interview to Hunter! I wasn't offered a interview at Hunter and I have had the difficult decision between choosing Columbia or going upstate for school (Buffalo or Albany). I applied to both NYU and Fordham but did not want to go to either as the real competition is between Hunter and Columbia. If I am unsatisfied with Columbia my first year I may transfer to Hunter if i get in. If you go to Hunter I would say go with that program as its supposed to be the best one in the city! But commuting plus having a job may be difficult. advisors told me that having a full time job isn't recommended as usually its 2-3 days of field placement practice and two days of classes. I was advised to work on the weekends and my days off. But only if its part time. Maybe feel out the program first and then commit to more hours? That may help! Correction: If you are on the Manhattan Campus for Stony Brook you have to trek out to the main campus in Long Island to still take courses out their. But if your in Long Island you can take all the courses out their This threat talks about Stony Brook's program but this may be outdated. https://www.indeed.com/forum/job/social-worker/MSW-programs-NY-area/t35293
