    Hello!

I am getting concerned about applying to grad school with a low cumulative GPA. By the end of the year (I am a senior) it should be between  3.15 or 3.30. My major GPA should be between a 3.45 to a 3.60. I switched into the major after working towards a kinesiology degree (heavy chemisty/physics/biomechanics type courses). I struggled in that major, I was also working two jobs and going to school at the same time and didn't feel like I saw a future in that field so my junior year I found out about communication disorders and switched last year. I am participating in NSSHLA and research in an aphasia lab this year. I have worked as a personal care assistant for a nonverbal child, I have interned at a speech private practice (and was offered an SLPA job there for next year). I am planning to apply to grad schools next fall while I am working as an SLPA but I am very concerned about getting in. An online program would be ideal and I don't know if those are easier to get into? I have not taken the GRE's but plan to do summer 2020. Please let me know if you have any schools in mind that may be a good option for me to consider or if you have been in a similar position as I am in! I really appreciate any input.

you can def get in, just make sure to apply to schools that accept people at a large with your stats. be practical, dont be like some people who have a 3.0 gpa and you apply to schools where the majority going there are 4.0, stick with where you know you have a chance. I had a similar situation as you, but my experience and paper made up for it. i got in to my top school and i love it. also a program is a program, dont get caught up in names. go where its cheapest and save money.

    good luck

The number one thing that I appreciated having during grad school is Google Drive. I'd recommend organizing by classes as well as making folders for topic areas for resources. It's amazing to be at an externship and be able to pull up all of your materials. Also, when a computer died on me during grad school--no problem. I had everything organized and backed up already.

Great idea! Will be sure to do this.

Some students are accepted conditionally and some unconditional. Conditional students will have to be reviewed after their first semester and they will decide if they will stay in the program or not.

i didnt know that. thanks for clarifying. will you be attending?

I think it really depends on your situation whether or not you should apply to a bunch. I'm bilingual too and only applied to one school---the one down the street from my house. I've been accepted so it is totally possible!! I have heard that bilingual candidates sometimes have an edge on others because we're pretty uncommon in the field

yup i applied to one school too and got in. they focus on multicultural populations which is right up my alley. if you have the stats, good references, pray about it and write a bomb essay and good experience  you have a good chance ( and i didnt have the best gpa)

I have no idea! I'm not from NC so I'll be out-of-state (which will be true at any school, but if I get into Bridgewater the tuition is incredibly cheap, and I might be in the running for a GA position at some schools, so I'm just waiting to find out!). It's good to hear that housing is cheap though! :) What would you say the average rent is?

If its like student housing ( roomates) ive seen places around 550. Im not too sure. BUt the area is good. I live in the area although. Let me know if you have any questions.

Please let us know what you hear back! I'm probably going to accept but keep later rejecting my acceptance as an option... I just haven't even heard back from some of my other schools, so I don't know how I can be expected to make a decision. ? It's going to depend largely on which one is the best option financially...

will you be living in NC indpendently? cause you can find pretty cheap housing, the jobs are plentiful. and central is reasonably priced. good luck in your decision.

Nothing yet! When I log on, it also says that my application is complete and has been submitted. Based on the results from last year, it sounds like most people heard back in mid-March... Does anyone know if they give offers of financial aid along with their acceptances? I heard that NCCU makes you accept within a very short timeframe (which seems a bit suspicious to me... the other school I've been accepted to is leaving it until April 15).

Im not sure how they do financial aid with their acceptances. Good luck you guys. Hoping we all get in and will see each other this fall :)

Not yet :( Did you receive a confirmation email once your application was submitted or anything like that? I never received anything. When I log in to their website, it shows that my application was submitted/paid for and is "complete" but I just find it odd that I never received anything confirming it was being reviewed.

Yes maam I did. It said something like, "Thank you for submitting your application". Ive been looking constantly even though its only been about 2.5 weeks lol.

I just see that my application is "complete" and has been "submitted".

Thanks for letting me know and best of luck to you! Let's speak it into the universe that we'll be in class together come next fall ?

thanks! good luck to you. what made you choose nccu? i dont have the best stats but i am taking prereqs this year and hoping that my statement and reference letters will get me into the program.

Hey! I applied to NCCU as well. It's one of my top choices. Does anyone have any idea of how long they typically take to make decisions?

I think by March they should let us know. On the results site it looks like the earliest people knew was late February and the latest like early April. So b/w late Feb and early April would be my guess.

I know it’s past the deadline and I’ve applied to all the other schools I was thinking of, but I didn’t realize that NCCU had a multicultural emphasis and I’m very interested in becoming a bilingual slp (i speak Creole) do you think if i applied now after the deadline they would even look at my application?

There is somewhere on the website where it says, "applicants may or may not be considered if its past the deadline". I would try anyway and contact graduate admissions along with the program. good luck

    Hi!

I am from Florida and an out of field applicant. I completed a bridge program for prerequisites.

I am applying to Florida State University, University of Central Florida, Jacksonville University, and Florida Atlantic University. I am debating on whether I should apply out of state because of affordability.

I am really worried that my scores will hold me back V:149, Q: 145, W:4.

I am in school out of state. I would recommend staying IN STATE. it is very expensive! Unless you have a way of getting free money of course.

  13. yes im from the area :) . from what i've heard things can be disorganized, but overall the program is good. for me its about price, and nccu is reasonable! i think you will like the are if you are accepted. raleigh-durham area is cheap, nice living ( depending where you are of course lmao) and theres lots to do in raleigh!

  14. Its the only school Ive applied to. I know, pretty crazy right? The program is actually very good though. If they accept me, I will absolutley go. The price isnt too bad, and I like that they have a focus on multicultural populations. Your stats are very good. I'm sure you'll get in! Good luck :) . I see that you have UNC as well. North Carolina has lots of great schools.
