  1. Thank you for the link, I appreciate it. I did not know about this requirement. Computer language should be easier and more practical I guess.
  2. I haven't heard or been told about the foreign language requirement. But thank you for this. I will check with the department.
  3. Thank you @bayessays, @Stat Postdoc Soon Faculty, and @BL250604 for the information you provided. It definitely helped hearing your positive opinions on the department. I have also heard about the university having hard time keeping students in academia, however, that should not be a problem for me as I'm interested to go into industry for the time being.
  4. Hi all! I got an acceptance from Rutgers University for the PhD program in Statistics and I want to ask how do you view this department? The university comes in the top 40 Statistics programs, however, I rarely saw its name being mentioned while talking about Statistics PhDs. That is why I am a bit concerned as this is my only funded acceptance. Any information and comments on the department or specific faculties will be appreciated. Thanks. Mahan
  5. Hi, I'm interested in applying for PhD programs in Statistics/Data Science and Biostatistics. I finished my undergrad on June. If you can suggest a few universities to apply that I have good chances for acceptance, I will really appreciate it. Undergrad Institution: International University (best university in Malaysia, U.S News in the 230s for Global University Ranking, 70th based on QS World University Ranking) Major: Statistics GPA: 3.92 Student Type: International Female GRE General Test: Q: 165 (86%) V: 154 (64%) W: 3.5 (39%) Courses: Math: Basic Mathematics (A), Calculus I (A+), Calculus II (A+), Advanced Calculus(intro to real analysis) (A+), Linear Algebra (A), Introduction to Computing (A+), Numerical Analysis (A), Introduction to Combinatorics (A+), Differential Equations (A). Stats: Introduction to Statistics (A+), Probability & Statistics I (A-), Probability & Statistics II (A+), Probability & Statistical Inference (A), Regression Analysis (A), , Non-Parametric Statistics (A+), Design and Analysis of Experiments (A), Stochastic Processes (B), Survey Sampling (A), Analysis of Failure and Survival Data (A+), Computer Intensive Methods in Statistics (A), Basic Operational Research (A). Computer Science: Data Analysis (A), Data Mining (A), Structured Programming (A). Programs Applying: PhD in Statistics/Biostatistics/Data Science Research Experience: A research project for a semester on using Data Mining Methods to analyze river water quality data (Analysis of water quality data using data mining methods). Not published yet Awards/honors: Dean's List for several semesters, Pass with honors Programming Experience: R, S-Plus, SPSS, C++, Orange, RapidMiner Teaching Experience: Tutor for A-Level Math for a year Letters of Recommendation: Coordinator of the Statistics program, Co-examiner of my research project, Statistics lecturer List of Schools Considering: University of Wisconsin UT Austin Rice UNC-Biostat Minnesota-Biostat Penn State Ohio State Florida UIUC Colorado State Pittsburgh Florida State George Washington Boston University of Virginia Arizona State Washington University in St. Louis Worcester Polytechnic Institute Concerns: 1. I can only apply to 5-8 universities (due to application costs). Therefore, I prefer to apply to universities that I have higher chances of acceptance. I want to know which of these schools are better for my case to apply. 2. My GRE Quantitative is quite low for most of the schools. How is that going to affect my applications. 3. Should I consider any other schools for either Stat/Biostat that are not in the list currently. Could someone comment on my profile and chances. Any suggestion/feedback would be great. Thanks
  6. @Stat PhD Now Postdoc Thank you for your advises and suggestions. I have a few questions as I am preparing the applications for the universities. I want to apply to a few Biostatistics and data science programs as well. I am more interested in applied biostatistics than theory. I want to get your suggestion on which schools are good fit for applied biostatistics and also statistics programs that are inclined towards data science. And which schools should I avoid for this matter?(theory based programs for both statistics and biostatistics) Another concern that I have is regarding the LOR and SOP. What qualities and skills the adcoms are looking for? What should my professors write in their letter? As for the SOP, do I need to write different letters for each university?
  7. Thanks for the explanation. I will update my list of schools. As you asked for the advanced calculus, it was partly about introduction to real analysis. I dont know how that will affect my profile since I'm already graduated and cannot take the real analysis course anymore.
  8. Thank you for your reply and suggestions. I will definitely consider the universities that you mentioned. Just have a question regarding my undergrad university. The university ranks higher than USTC, KU, and Yonsei in both Us News Ranking and QS Ranking. That will not help me to have a chance at some of the top-tier universities? Is my research experience even good enough for those? Another thing I wanted to mention is due to some issues I withdrew from three consecutive semesters, which caused the length of my study being 5 years. Is that going to affect my application? how can I kinda sort that out?
  9. Hi, I'm interested in applying for PhD programs in Statistics and Data Science. I just finished my undergrad this June. I'm also interested in Biostatistics programs if I will have a better chance for higher ranked universities. Undergrad Institution: International University (70th based on QS World University Ranking, University of Malaya, Malaysia) Major: Statistics GPA: 3.92 Student Type: International Female GRE General Test: Haven't taken yet (should get high on quantitative) Courses: Math: Basic Mathematics (A), Calculus I (A+), Introduction to Computing (A+), Calculus II (A+), Linear Algebra (A), Numerical Analysis (A), Introduction to Combinatorics (A+), Differential Equations (A), Advanced Calculus (A+). Stats: Probability & Statistics I (A-), Introduction to Statistics (A+), Regression Analysis (A), Probability & Statistics II (A+), Non-Parametric Statistics (A+), Basic Operational Research (A), Probability & Statistical Inference (A), Design and Analysis of Experiments (A), Stochastic Processes (B), Survey Sampling (A), Analysis of Failure and Survival Data (A+). Applying to where: Carnegie Mellon John Hopkins University of Michigan UCLA NYU University of Washington University of Wisconsin UT Austin Rice UNC Minnesota Penn State UC Davis University of Virginia Washington University in St. Louis Worcester Polytechnic Institute George Washington Southern Methodist Could someone comment on my chances, and if I should add or remove some of the universities. Any suggestion/feedback would be great. Thanks
  10. Hi everybody, I'm having a hard time deciding on which grad school to apply to, as I haven't taken my GRE yet and currently I haven't done any research; my research project will be next semester. I was wondering if any of you can help me with my choices. Here is my profile: Undergrad Institution: Best University in Malaysia (87th based on QS World University Ranking) Major: Statistics GPA: 3.71 Student Type: International Female GRE General Test: Haven't taken yet. Is it possible to get offered a conditional acceptance without GRE? Since the verbal will be difficult for me, need to study for it. Courses: Math: Basic Mathematics (A), Calculus I (A+), Introduction to Computing (A+), Calculus II (A+), Linear Algebra (A), Numerical Analysis (A), Introduction to Combinatorics (A+), Differential Equations (A), Advanced Calculus (A+). Stats: Probability & Statistics I (A-), Introduction to Statistics (A+), Regression Analysis (A), Probability & Statistics II (B-), Non-Parametric Statistics (A+), Basic Operational Research (A), Probability & Statistical Inference (A), Data Analysis (A), Design and Analysis of Experiments (A), Stochastic Processes (ongoing), Survey Sampling (ongoing), Data Mining (ongoing). Programs Applying: PhD in Statistics/MS in Data Science(funding is an issue) Research Experience: None yet (I will start a research project next semester which will be after my applications) Awards/honors: Dean's List Programming Experience: R, S-Plus, SPSS, C++ Teaching Experience: Tutor for A-Level Math Letters of Recommendation: I think I will have decent letters, one from Stats Professor who is the program coordinator, One from the head of the department, One from a Math professor. Applying to where: Reach: NCSU, Texas A&M, John Hopkins, Northwestern, UT Austin, UIUC, Rice, Purdue, Penn State, Ohio State, Brown, Boston University, UCDavis Target: USC, Iowa State, Minnesota, Arizona State, Rutgers, Florida, Michigan State, Virginia tech, Maryland College Park, UCIrvine, UCSanta Barbara, Pittsburgh, Iowa, George Washington, Arizona, Indiana, Emory I want to narrow down my choices to about 10 schools. I'm not sure which ones will be safe choices for me and which will be too high. I would appreciate if anyone can have a look at my profile and recommend the schools for me. Thank you.
