  1. I asked my two main supervisors (both very familiar with my work and how I am as a student) who I had good working relationships with. My third was a strong faculty member who I didn't know very well but I also knew him as a very competent academic. He was on my committee for my MA thesis.

I'd say those most familiar with your ability as an academic are the best fit, if you are able! If not, I'd pick someone who can give you a strong character reference :)

  2. Hi @ironheart. I'll just give you my own personal opinion based on my experience from this application cycle.

I contacted at least one person at every school I was thinking of applying too. This, I would say, was one of the most important parts of the process for me. I started early (like in June, July) and narrowed down who I wanted to work with and talk to. This was SO important because I really got a sense of what programs fit and what ones did not. I had some really awesome faculty members who were honest with me and, after speaking in email or phone exchange, gave me an honest sense of whether the program was a good fit or not. This saved me time and energy because I was not applying to programs that would be an outright mismatch. I had some really awesome conversations with some awesome faculty. In fact, the most helpful conversation I had was with a faculty member from a school I didn't even end up applying too. She really gave me some helpful advice on picking programs.

I also got a sense of who I really wanted to work with and I was able to rank the programs I wanted the most out of the ones I applied too. This all came from POI conversations. So yes I would comfortably say it is important you contact the POIs in your application process. Especially because you are looking at four fairly (or very) competitive programs.

As for visiting, I am only now just working out a last minute visit to a program I am sitting on an offer for. So not sure if visiting is 'necessary', but I think it would really help! I wish I had done it before hand! haha

    Just my thoughts.

  3. So my portal status for York GWF studies changed to admitted but no email/notification has come my way with any information and it states basically everywhere they will contact me via email when a decision is made. Do I wait for a few days and see what happens or email them to ask about funding information?

    Excited to get admitted though!

I think it's reasonable to wait to hear back from all your schools before you decide, and I think it would be unreasonable for one school to expect you to make a decision before hearing from other places. That said, if you anticipate a response from one of your schools coming later than the deadline that another school gave, I would contact both the school with the deadline and the school that has yet to decide and tell them the situation.

My Temple letter said that first-round funding offers would come in early March. Did yours say something similar? I was hoping to hear sooner because I got their acceptance letter so early, but it doesn't look like that will be the case!

Okay good, I think so too. My letter also said first-round funding offers would come in early March. I anticipated my decision making phase being around Mid-March so having the funding options infront of me would be very helpful and important.

Cross your fingers for us both to be in the first round funding!!

@jmc117 Omg, congrats on the Temple acceptance! That's awesome news!! Now we await the funding notifications together...

    Yess!!!! So happy and relieved

A question-what is the protocol when awaiting answers from funding/other acceptances/rejections. Is there a certain time frame one can respectfully wait to hear back from other programs/wait on funding decisions? I know the Temple slip lists an April "answer by" but...

Yes, still waiting on a funding offer from Temple. I'm getting more anxious about it now that I've heard from Rutgers. I also haven't seen any other Temple acceptances on the results page, so maybe they'll do the funding along with the main batch of notifications. I hope it'll be soon!

Today I saw someone get waitlisted at Drexel, but I've still heard nothing. The portal still says no decision has been made. Sounds like a hard pass, but I wish they'd just tell me and put me out of my misery.

I know what you mean about trying to limit the checks. I've had GradCafe open in two separate browser tabs for the last week or two, and it's making it hard to get work done!

I am still checking the mail as soon as I get home from work everyday in hopes I will see a little envelope from Temple there. I'll let you know when that happens ? And then hopefully around that time you will get work on funding! With you being one of the first acceptances to go out I am sure they'd want to make the effort to give you some sort of sustainable funding. I am down to checking only once every hour (or maybe twice) so there's progress lol

York is really about what you make of it. There are a few people I know who've finished their PhDs and gotten multiple  offers from very very good schools in the states, and there are others who dont ( also striking every few years means there are a few more obstacles to contend with).

Very true as well. I am thankful I know (for the most part) what I am stepping into with York should they offer me an acceptance there.

I will say that the current student profiles give me hope as there are people doing relatable projects to what I imagine my own would be

It's OK. I am not really into York tbh, even I love their faculty pack. The whole school runs with an incredibly low efficiency.

Still waiting other schools' response. I hope I could get a better one lol.

The low efficiency comment is what I have been hearing consistently across the board...makes me nervous lol. Yeah me too. Funding would be very nice too!

Hm, I'm not sure I would say Rutgers is my first choice. All other things being equal, Temple has more targeted resources and may be a better fit for my research. That being said, funding is a very important factor for me, and the Rutgers offer is excellent! I was not expecting to be offered a non-teaching fellowship, and that's extremely valuable in my situation.

Ouch, March is a long time to wait. I hope you hear back soon from the American options! I'm definitely rooting for you!

Ou sounds like you have some choices to make! Tough decisions, tough decisions. Rooting for you as well, and super happy you are getting offers. Are you still waiting to hear from Temple about funding?

Yes it is ? I am trying to limit the amount of times I check the different portals daily and keep myself busy...lol

Thank you so much! I see your program list and I also applied for York's WGSS. But it is highly unlikely to receive admission since one of my references couldn't write a letter, and I have no means to change the information. Sad, but I wish you could get into!

Oh no sorry to hear about your reference :( Are you waiting to see other acceptances or pretty set on Arizona?

    Hi All!

New to the thread! I'm a mass comm PhD applicant focused on international/political comm. I applied to:  UWMadison, UMichigan, UIBloomington, UGA, UPenn, Penn State, Stanford, and UPenn Annenberg. Responses so far:

UGA: Accepted (my home program so I found out early)

UWMadison: Accepted (funding letter in 1-2 weeks) (I learned some inside news on who gets $$ there-see my post to Emma Friday in this thread)

    Stanford: Rejected (haha-not surprised..)

Penn State: Flying up for interview 2/7

UNC Chapel Hill: Flying up for interview 2/14

UPenn Annenberg (BIG DREAM): No News Yet, Ms. Murray says news comes out mid-February.

    UMichigan: No News Yet

    UI Bloomington: No News Yet

STATS: Undergrad GPA: 3.92, Grad GPA: 4.0, GRE: 310-V163/Q147. (I know-I bombed my Q...I have a lot of quant research experience and all A's in math on transcripts, including phD level-hoping that will compensate) A dozen or so academic awards and research grants, years of teaching experience and good research experience. One co-authored publication and two theses. A McNair Scholar (low income/1st gen) and speak a couple of foreign languages.

I'm so thankful to be in any of the programs I applied to-they are all wonderful, but UPenn Annenberg is my dream school. I don't have connections to any faculty, but my research interests are an exact fit. I'm a total mess waiting to hear...checking emails all day everyday even though I know it's too early. Anybody have news from or any inside knowledge on Annenberg?

    Good luck!

    -Dannie

Also waiting for UMich! I thought about applying to Annenberg but it wasn't a good fit for my research interests.

Hopefully we hear something apart from radio silence from U Mich soon

Yeah, I've been in my current position for four years, but I've been teaching at community colleges for seven years, and I taught ESL abroad before that. I think I'm a bit older than most of the folks in this thread.

I love teaching and I intend to continue doing it, but I've started to realize how much I love research and how much it enhances my work in the classroom. Community college teaching is very classroom-focused; my institution has some support for research and conference participation, but not as  much as I'd like. Eventually, I hope to go on to a four-year school where I can teach upper-division courses and get more research support.

Well perhaps we shall see each other in the Fall! If not, would love to chat re: research

There are other trans folks teaching in my department both at my current job and at my last position. I choose to believe that there are a lot more of us out there, and that over time we will become ever more visible.

Yes, I'm local to Temple. I live one 20-min bus ride away from the Annenberg building. I feel really lucky that there's such a high concentration of universities in the Philadelphia area, because I don't think I could commit to Ph.D. study otherwise. I'm not willing to give up tenure, and I need to stay local if I want to keep my job. I'm still mulling over whether I'll take a leave of absence or try to go on teaching half-time while I do my coursework.

Oh wow so you are already teaching? That is awesome. My end goal is to teach as well. I like that idea-projecting that out to the Universe so it becomes a reality! Lol.

Temple is a little more of a 9 hour car ride for me so while it is one of my top schools, going to be a real big decision as to whether I can afford to go. But I would love the opportunity!
