For anyone who is curious about what the dates mean I accidentally checked my application status from last year and it has a 2/1/21 update. Maybe they are reconsidering or the dates really don't mean anything ?
update from me again-- my old app (2020) went to a 12/9/20 update when it was showing 2/1/21 -- so now both apps are showing 12/9/20?-- this is all very odd

Yeah I have the same dates as you. I was waitlisted last year and I thought my application got better so I'm not sure what to think of the dates. I have hope still haha

I believe that the results were announced in April last year. Not sure if it'll be the same this year.
Yes it was late April last year-- I think I saw that decisions would be in April again, but I may be wrong. I'm ready for an update y'all lol

I really think the only updates that will be interpretable moving forward are those that we see in 2021 (Jan, Feb). Those were the big separators last year. So, just waiting it out I guess (it may just be easier to live in a cave until April)...
Yes!

According to cellbiogal on page 3
"Welcome! You definitely missed out on some (neurotic) fun last year!
It appears that the update reflects NDSEG administrators updating the status of your application on that date, but it doesn’t actually say what that status change was.
If you check out last years thread, we noticed the dates back in April while we were waiting for award results. At the time, some people had a december update and some people had an april update. Then as the days passed, the april people kept getting another update here and there.
When awards were released, all of #decembergang was rejected. Some of the April people were awardees, some were waitlisted, and some were rejected.
We concluded that if you didn’t have an april update, you were cut back in December. BUT, Since we only started looking for this in April, its unclear what updates happen in November through April. (Ie. Did everyone get an update on in december? Were there February updates? Its unclear.) I think a natural hypothesis for now is that a November update means your application was marked as complete and will be evaluated, but it’s impossible to know with certainty. Also, we made a spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/u/2/d/1HHwP8Zyh8W24HRUh5WnObRExb24JhN5ZLTa7p5Q8CkI/htmlview#gid=0"
Also note, applications were due in December last year, so #decembergang didn't make it out of december. It seems like as long as you are still getting updates you were still in the running, meaning that you might have been cut at that last update or you will receive another update later on meaning you were still in the running. But that is just my take on it- I could be wrong lol

Does anyone know if it is fine to add text right next to the "Intellectual Merit" and "Broader Impacts" headings? Or you have to make the headings in its own line and then add texts below?
I put it right next to it... I've seen it done this way by other people who have received it so i assume its fine.. idk

Since the new solicitation has already been released, looks like it's time to start a new thread for the upcoming NSF GRFP cycle.
Biggest changes were the identification of specific priority research areas:
“n FY2021, GRFP will emphasize three high priority research areas in alignment with NSF goals. These areas are Artificial Intelligence, Quantum Information Science, and Computationally Intensive Research. Applications are encouraged in all disciplines supported by NSF that incorporate these high priority research areas.”
NSF has stated this will not change their review process: https://www.aip.org/fyi/2020/nsf-defends-new-emphases-graduate-research-fellowship-program
Thoughts? Will this change how you write your application?
It's changing my approach slightly. I've heard some people say it is for show because it's what congress wants, but their wording is super specific. "emphasize high priority research areas" tells me they want these sorts of proposals and will fund more of them potentially, and "will not change their review process" tells me they will still be reviewing all categories for awards, but that doesn't mean they'll have the same priority.
Maybe I'm wrong in my interpretation though?
What does everyone else thing or what have you heard?
-
Anyone know how NSF is selected? So are a % of applicants selected from each category (e.g., psychology-social psychology)? or are subject areas pooled (e.g., all of psychology)?
-
Anyone on the waitlist have new application update dates?

Haven't heard anything either. I sent an email asking for a general time we can expect to know for sure that we did or didn't get it but haven't gotten a response.
No news on my end either. My application last update is still 4/17 (now that we know the dates mean everything ?)

Anyone have any insights into how the waitlist works?
