  1. I will be a new doctoral student this fall. Initially, I thought I would be teaching two courses(6 hours); however, now I have been told I will be teaching 3 classes(10 hours total). My job is a total of 20 required hours. I will be expected to use the rest for office hours, grading, and maybe some student assistance. I am curious if this seem like overload. Most PhD students I know are teaching two courses maximum per semester. This 3 course load is considered normal in my program for all TAs. I am starting to freak out and now regretting my decision to attend here even though it was my top choice. Am I thinking irrationally or should I follow this feeling more. I dont want to give up before even attending, but I also dont want to start somewhere and then get burned out and have to leave or transfer somewhere else. I have already contacted the director of the program, and he mentioned this is normal. I feel like I will be putting in way more than 20 hours per week for work which seems my studies will be second and not a priority. Please help with sharing your experiences and thoughts.
  2. Please contact me if you have decided to attend UMBC. It would be great to share with other newcomers and those who will be moving there from out of the area. I will be a doctoral student.
  3. I would actually get a contact number from the Council of Graduate schools and report this. This is something that should not slip by. You should atleast inform someone of it, even anonymously.

I will be a new doctoral student at UMBC. Can anyone recommend specific areas to live that are within less than 700 for rent for a studio, one bedroom, or basement of someone's house. I would like any specific buildings, realtors, or folks that you could recommend that might be renting. I am hoping to move there in August at the beginning or middle of the month. Also, is there anyone that is a graduate student there now? Is there any suggestions you can give me about the area? I will not have a car; therefore, I will need to be very close to campus. Thanks! If any of you live there now or will be attending UMBC, it would be nice to meet some people ahead of time also.
  5. Thanks for writing. I will call them tomorrow. I did tell them that it was my first choice nearly a month ago. At that time, they were emailing me nearly one or two days after my requests. They said they are pleased it is my top choice in email and I havent heard anything for about three weeks. It feels strange because I havent received any replies from two professors who were working together to help me with funding.
  6. Approximately one month ago, I recevied an email from the director of my first choice program saying 'congratulations, this is an informal email to let you know we have recommended you for graduate school and we can offer you a half-time graduate assistantship. You will be receiving official notification of your acceptance from the graduate school soon.' I was in touch with the director a few times and asked more about the funding information. They had responded a few times stating they have funding for me and might be able to find more funding for me; however, once I received my official acceptance from the graduate school, I emailed the director inquiring when I will be receiving the official letter about funding in the mail. I havent heard back from the director or another professor I was in touch with for over three weeks. I have emailed them two to three times with no response. I have another university that has offered me funding and would like to take this offer; however, the school above is my number one choice. I am starting to get the feeling that something is going on with the school above. I cannot make a final decision without an official offer of funding. I am thinking about calling the director of the program tomorrow since the April 15th deadline is fast approaching. I feel uncomfortable about the entire situation and I dont know what to say on the phone, especially since two professors have received two or three of my emails in the past three weeks without any response. Has this happened to anyone? I would appreciate any input or very direct suggestions of what you would recommend I do.
