  1. Does anyone know if they are still offering more financial aid? I had some problem activating the account previously and just submitted it today. I wonder whether there's still any chance for me to get some money  /(ㄒoㄒ)\

Congrats on all the acceptances!!!! Truly so happy for you guys!

I'm planning on applying for the next application season, do those of you who were accepted mind sharing your stats/work experiences? I want to get an idea of where I stand right now :) Thanks!

    Once again congrats!

Hi! I have an Ed.M from HGSE, but in the Human Development and Psychology cohort. I chose it because it was a one-year program and I figured having Harvard's name on my resume would open up new opportunities (it did). The only thing I did not like about the program is the lack of a thesis track. Otherwise, it was my favorite educational experience by far. I learned so much.

That being said, this is just a one-sided account. I don't know much about the NYU program- maybe try to find someone who went there for greater perspective?

    Thanks for sharing your experience!

In the first option you said you'd have to apply for PhD programs before the end of your first semester but that's not true. You could do the program and then work for a year or two as an RA in one of the many labs you mentioned that are doing interesting work. There is no rule stating you must apply immediately.

Also, it would be worth looking into just doing RA positions for a few years and getting some first author posters/presentations/papers. That would be way cheaper then a master's (in fact you'd be paid) and it means SOOO much on grad school applications, assuming you're productive during that time. I have heard numerous stories of people having lots of success using this strategy, especially since many PhD programs make you "redo" your Masters in their program.

I'd reach out to your mentors and see what they think. You could also reach out to people you think you'd be interesting in working with and see what they value. I had alot of success doing that and was steered toward a one year post-bacc RA position instead of a master's and I'm SOO grateful I went that route. Way cheaper then a master's and I got into my top choice PhD program (top 5 program).

Whatever you do, just do it well! Good luck!!

    Thanks for your reply!

I am already doing a post-bac RA position now (and I find it extremely difficult to find a paid RA position, so I just did an unpaid), but I still didn't get any PhD offer this year. Also my undergrad major was not psychology. That's why I would like to do a master this year.

No matter I choose Harvard or NYU I would definitely continue to do an RA. So I assume master+RA would be better than a sole RA in my situation.

  5. I am planning to do a Cognitive Psychology PhD but this year I only got two master offers:

    1. Harvard Ed.M. in Mind Brain and Education

Pros: One-year program; can freely select courses in Harvard and MIT; Boston has more labs that match my interest where I want to work as RA; I guess I'll love Boston

Cons: High tuition; less renowned in the field of psychology; have to apply for PhD even before the first semester ends

    2. NYU M.A. in Psychology:

Pros: Better psychology professional training; I believe more renowned in the field

Cons: Two-year program; don't like NYC; high living cost

    Anyone has any suggestions? Thanks!

  6. I am a student in Spanish, and I am applying to psychology graduate programs. Now I have received an MS offer from NYU and an RA position from UCSD.

NYU is definitely a great school in psychology, and can give me more background in psychology, as now I am not a psych-major student. But as my boyfriend is in SD, UCSD is really my first choice, and the lab that offers me RA position is also a great fit to my interest.

I am also afraid that if I reject the RA offer, I may not be able to be admitted to UCSD in the future. And if I reject the NYU offer, I may not even get a master offer next year.

Can anyone give me some advice? Thanks much!

Just because I didn't go to grad school in the other two years, doesn't mean I wasn't accepted for two.  And it has worked for me four times.  Not to mention multiple admissions directors have agreed that putting it in your SOP is very important.  You aren't the sort of person who appreciates being wrong, are you?

Thanks. But we are applying this year (F19) so we can't modify our SOP anymore. All we can do now is to email the committee about our situation...

What type of program are you applying to? For example, UMich’s social psychology department, And Minnesota ‘s developmental departments don’t interview before they admit. As others have said, it’s not typical for clinical programs, but in other departments, I’ve also seen people mention that they were unknowingly waitlisted, never interviewed and ended up getting a spot. It really all just depends.

I am applying to general (non-clinical) psychology. For example, I didn't see anyone posting USC psychology PhD interview (though one said all interviews had been sent out), but it is said that most decisions will be made by this Friday. So I wonder what is happening.

Anyway there's only one day left...fingers crossed...

I don't believe this works at the graduate level. At the professorship level, it is possible for one of you to get an offer, and then you ask them to find a position for your partner as well. However, since your fiancée already got rejected, I highly doubt they would undo the rejection for her. The two-body problem doesn't really have great resolutions at the MS or PhD level.

Thanks for the reply. It seems that thegradcafe didn't send me any notification so I didn't see your reply.

My fiancée was not rejected - she hasn't heard anything from the committee, including rejection.
